People who prefer active vacations often choose to hike in the mountains. Such tours to the mountains are now ubiquitous. Everyone can choose what they want to see, combined with exciting activities. When choosing a hiking tour, you should carefully consider all the conditions, including the payment type for the tour. This article will discuss the main criteria for choosing a hiking tour for an unforgettable active vacation.

5 main criteria for choosing a hiking tour

Choosing a tour to the mountains depends on many factors that may vary depending on your interests, experience, and preferences. Here are 5 main criteria to consider when choosing a hiking tour.

Fitness level

In mountains, it is essential to have physical preparation and health to carry without problems overloads associated with height, acclimatization, and significant weight of equipment. Climbing Mount Elbrus is a great example of a hiking tour that tests people for strength.

Choose a tour that matches your abilities, depending on how physically fit you are. Starting with easy trails or group tours may be a good idea if you are a beginner.

Duration

What’s your time budget for your hike? All day? An afternoon or morning? Just an hour? Decide how much time you are willing to spend on the tour. It can be a day trip, a week-long adventure, or even a longer journey. Be sure to factor in travel time to and from the trailhead. Book a trekking has hikes to satisfy all these needs. Be sure to factor in travel time to and from the trailhead.

Difficulty of the itinerary and elevation gain

Evaluate the difficulty of the itinerary to match your experience and skills. You should not choose a too difficult route if you do not have the relevant experience.

If you are a beginner searching for a hike, it is best to choose a hiking tour with less than 500 feet of elevation gain unless you are very fit. Although 1000 feet of elevation gain may not seem like a lot, it can prove to be quite challenging for new hikers, particularly if you begin at a high altitude.

Keep in mind that hikes with shorter distances and more elevation gain will be steeper and more demanding. It’s best to start small and gradually increase your elevation gain as you become more comfortable as a hiker.

Weather conditions

When looking for hiking tours, it’s important to confirm if they are accessible throughout the year, depending on the location. There are a lot of trails that can be blocked by snow, as well as trails with seasonal rivers that require wading through them. To avoid having to backtrack for miles, it’s best to be aware of these factors beforehand.

Also, research the climate and weather conditions of the region you are going to. This will help you prepare properly and pack the right gear.

Popularity

Are the hiking tours you’re thinking of visiting frequently overcrowded? To avoid large crowds, it’s recommended that you head out early in the morning to secure a parking spot, or consider going on a weekday if it’s feasible. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan in case you arrive at the trail and are unable to find parking or determine that it’s too crowded for your preference.

5 additional criteria to consider when choosing a hiking tour

Foto di Kitera Dent via Unsplash

Here are 5 more criteria you can consider when looking for the best hiking tour:

  • Budget. Consider transportation, lodging, food, equipment rental, and other possible expenses.
  • Safety. Research the risks associated with your chosen route. Make sure you have the necessary skills and equipment to ensure safety.
  • Personal preferences. Consider your personal interests and preferences. For example, mass group tours may not be right for you if you prefer solitude.
  • Accessibility. Evaluate the accessibility of your destination. How easy will it be for you to get to your starting point?
  • Reviews and recommendations. Research reviews from other travelers who have already visited your chosen destination. This can give you valuable tips and insight into what to expect.

Buying this or that tour to the mountains, it is necessary to carefully familiarize yourself with all the conditions that involve such a vacation. There are tours that are specially organized for large families where there are very young children. Rest in the mountains will not leave anyone indifferent.

Conclusion

Any person who loves adventures, to participate in them, to feel like a pioneer will certainly be happy to travel to the mountains, to the real mountains. Currently offered mountain tours allow you to fully realize all your desires, aspirations, and needs for active and informative recreation. Tours to the mountains are usually an exciting and intense activity that will not leave anyone indifferent. For this, it is not necessary to be, for example, a mountaineer or a specially physically prepared person.

Normandy is notably well known for its variety of culture, architecture, coastline, historic D-Day Landing Beaches, delicious food and welcoming atmosphere. With its medieval towns, gastronomic delights such as oysters, camembert, and towering cliffs are simply unforgettable.

Wonder around Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel is definitely a Normandy must-see!

It is the scene of the largest tides in continental Europe. Mont-Saint-Michel rises from the sea and leaves an impression that lasts a lifetime. Climb the ramparts, and take in the sweeping views of the sea.

Hike the cliffs in Etretat

Etretat, a top destination along the Normandy coast, is a winner. The views of the alabaster cliffs, the pebbled beach, the clear waters to swim and the lovely town make it a sure success for a visit. Climb both cliffs for spectacular views.

Nature has carved unusual shapes out of the white cliffs in Etretat. As a result, this picturesque spot attracted many Impressionist painters, who sought to capture the cliffs on canvas. The pretty seaside town of Etretat is also the setting for Maurice Leblanc’s popular French children’s book about Arsène Lupin, the gentleman burglar.

Walk on Omaha Beach & Visit the Normandy American Cemetery

Visiting the D-Day Beaches is an essential thing to do in Normandy France. Here at the D-Day landing beaches, the largest amphibious invasion in history took place.

In World War II thousands of Allied soldiers arrived on June 6, 1944, to carry out Operation Overload and push the Nazis out of France. The bravery, loss and ensuing freedom make an impact on every visitor as it is right here that the course of history changed forever. Americans will definitely want to visit Omaha Beach.

The memorial is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery and it consists of a semicircular colonnade with a loggia at each end containing large maps and narratives of the military operations.

Glamping in Regneville-sur-mer

In the narrow streets of Regnéville-sur-Mer, the scent of the great departures towards the open sea still floats. A port of call since the Middle Ages, the seafaring village has preserved its maritime character. Shaped by centuries of history, it is today a real little haven of peace.

Regnéville-sur-Mer is a timeless village, with a landscape shaped by the tides. Along the harbour, the maritime identity of Regnéville-sur-Mer can be felt: located in the harbour of the Sienne, the port of Regnéville is a beaching port that was once active with the lime trade and fishing.

Visit the Cara-Meuh farm

Visit the artisanal production of Cara-Meuh! Located in the heart of the family farm, near the tip of Grouin du Sud. You will discover authentic products, made with organic milk from cows. Enjoy the explanations, the observation of the machines, an artistic exhibition, the milk museum, the animal park, the shop (local products) … And the essential tasting of Cara-Meuh!

It is a family history since 1929. Initially milk producers from father to son, we decided following the crisis of 2009, to transform this milk into delicious caramels, the “Cara-Meuh! Certified organic since 2013, the farm is developing a productive ecosystem with respect for the land and biodiversity with a vast reforestation project around the meadows. Over the years, production has diversified. The organic milk is now transformed into soft caramels, cheeses, butter, raw cream, cottage cheese and Italian ice cream in summer. An educational trail open all year long and free of charge, and guided tours by reservation.

Hiking along the coast in Cap de la Hague

Have a walk on the highest cliffs in Europe, rising to 128 metres above sea level, you cannot miss the wild and natural territory of the famous Nez de Jobourg.

The wind blows, but the view is incredible. Vertiginous cliffs, the water of a thousand colours and the Channel Islands on the horizon. In the distance, you can admire the ships sailing on the Channel, towards England. A trail will allow you to explore the entire peninsula on foot.

To explore a new place while leaving no trace, follow some basic principles, such as staying on designated trails, avoiding disturbing wildlife habitats, packing out all trash and waste, and using biodegradable soaps when cleaning up. Doing so can ensure we leave the environment just as we found it. By following the principles of leaving no trace, we can minimize our environmental impact while still having fun and experiencing the natural beauty of the world around us.

Biking: a fantastic way to explore new places

Let’s talk about biking as an outdoor activity. It’s a fantastic way to get outside, feel the wind in your hair, and explore new places while also getting some exercise. Not only does biking provide a great cardio workout, but it also helps strengthen your muscles and improve your overall fitness. Plus, it’s a low-impact activity that’s easy on your joints, making it an excellent option for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Before hitting the trails, it’s essential to make sure your bike is ready to ride:

  • Check your bike’s tires to ensure they’re adequately inflated
  • Test your brakes to make sure they’re working well
  • Pack a small repair kit just in case you have any issues while out on the road

There are a few key tips when leaving no trace while biking. Stick to designated trails and avoid any areas where biking is prohibited. Don’t disturb any wildlife habitats, and be sure to pack out all trash and waste. If traveling through a sensitive area, consider using a bike rack to avoid damaging the terrain.

So, get out there, hit the trails, and enjoy all the benefits of biking as an outdoor activity. Leave no trace and be a responsible adventurer while at it!

Hiking: a popular outdoor activity for escape from the stress of daily life

Hiking is a popular outdoor activity that offers a variety of physical and mental benefits. It’s a great way to exercise, enjoy nature’s beauty, and escape daily stresses. One of the primary benefits of hiking is the opportunity to get fresh air and exercise while enjoying the stunning scenery. Hiking also offers a chance to disconnect from technology and immerse oneself in the natural world, which can help reduce stress and improve mental well-being.

Before hitting the trail, it’s important to prepare appropriately. This means wearing comfortable and supportive footwear, dressing in layers, bringing plenty of water and snacks, and carrying a map, compass, or GPS device. It’s also good to inform someone of your hiking plans in an emergency.

There are several fundamental principles to follow when leaving no trace while hiking. Stick to designated trails to avoid damaging fragile ecosystems and habitats. Avoid disturbing wildlife and carry out all trash and waste. Use a portable toilet or bury human waste at least 200 feet from water sources if necessary. Put on your hiking boots, grab your gear, and hit the trail to experience the many benefits of hiking while leaving no trace and preserving the natural environment for generations to come.

Kayaking: enjoy the outdoors while getting exercise

Kayaking involves paddling a small boat called a kayak through water, and it’s an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors while getting some exercise. One of the most significant benefits of kayaking is the opportunity to explore new places from a unique perspective. Whether you’re gliding through calm waters or navigating rapids, you’ll be able to experience the beauty of nature in a way that’s impossible from land. Kayaking can be an excellent workout for your upper body and core muscles.

Before setting out on a kayaking trip, you must be adequately prepared. Wear a life jacket and bring any necessary safety equipment like a whistle or signaling device. Ensure your kayak is in good condition and you have the proper gear, such as a paddle and a waterproof bag for storing valuables.

If you want to leave no trace when kayaking, you should try to have as little of an effect on the environment as possible. Don’t bother animals; be aware of any delicate places you might pass through. Dispose of any garbage adequately in the designated area for this. Also, use soap that will not harm the environment for cleaning. These are usually natural or biodegradable soaps.

Explore a new place while leaving no trace!

You should have a good understanding of how to explore a new place while leaving no trace through the activities of biking, hiking, and kayaking. Remember, these outdoor activities offer many benefits, including physical exercise, mental relaxation, and a sense of accomplishment. Leave no trace by staying on established paths and rivers, recycling and properly disposing of your trash, and staying out of natural areas. Remember that everyone is responsible for protecting the planet’s natural resources. Leave natural heritage for future generations.

Get out there and explore a new place while leaving no trace! Whether biking through the mountains, hiking in a national park, or kayaking down a river, always be a responsible adventurer. Leave the environment just as you found it or better.

For those traveling on foot, Ireland is a destination that offers authentic and magical experiences. Ancient pilgrimage routes, trails that wind through endless woods, and breathtaking coastal itineraries will make your journey unique and unforgettable. You will be able to admire some of the most beautiful and uncontaminated parts of the country. You can choose from very different scenarios and landscapes, while discovering the true spirit of the island in every corner.

The itineraries and paths to be tackled while walking on the Irish island are truly numerous. A particularly interesting area, as well as easily accessible, is between the county of Galway and Clare. The Slieve Aughty region is a natural park characterized by endless forests, quiet country roads, river landscapes, and striking mountains. Here is Slieve Aughty Centre, an eco-resort surrounded by nature and the best starting point for a walking holiday in Ireland. The hosts will provide you with a map with 4 simple but captivating paths that will allow you to discover the surroundings of the accommodation. There is also an area dedicated to families. The Enchanted Forest is a small grove where children can rediscover the magic of nature.

From the eco-resort, it is also easy to reach other points of interest, such as the Connemara National Park. It’s a wild region steeped in legend, folklore, and is the perfect location for a walking holiday in Ireland. The Connemara is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Lough Corrib and offers incredible landscapes that change with every step. Rivers, lakes, rugged hills, sandy beaches, dramatic mountains, and cliffs will fill your eyes and heart with wild beauty.

We recommend at least these two of the many itineraries you can do in the National Park. The Upper Diamond Hill path, a panoramic walk that reaches the top from the Visitor Center, and the 6-kilometer path that from Inagh Valley allows you to reach the splendid Maumahog Lake. Truly indescribable panoramas await you at both arrival points!

What is the best hiking clothing? Whether you’re planning for a leisure hike or a more demanding trail, it’s important to be 100% prepared for the outdoors, and what better way to start that off than choosing your next hiking outfit? If you’re unsure of how to choose your attire for your next adventure, fret not! Our comprehensive list of tips will aid you in choosing the best hiking shirts and shorts for any occasion.

Key Considerations

Hiking

Photo via Canva PRO

Before you decide on that adorable, yet not quite so practical outfit, here are some factors you’d want to weigh in before purchasing.

Safety

Always dress with a purpose –– your hiking outfit will be the first layer of protection you have against the elements! Choosing an appropriate outfit will largely depend on the type of environment you’re looking to hike in, and the possible dangers you may face. For example, if you’re traveling in an area that is mosquito-prone, remember to pack long pants and sleeves that are coated with insect repellent, especially during the summer months. Alternatively, if you’re expecting to hike during rainy or windy seasons, bring a waterproof and wind-resistant coat, or even specially-made waterproof hiking pants for extra protection.

Comfortability

Cotton is a definite no-go! As you sweat, the organic fabric will hold onto the moisture and breed bacteria. The wetness will disrupt your body’s natural heat regulation, keeping you too warm in hot weather and too cold in cooler conditions. Instead, we recommend sticking to breathable wicking synthetic materials like polyester, polypropylene, and nylon. These technical fabrics keep sweat off your skin by facilitating quicker drying, which will ensure a pleasant and dry hiking experience.

Furthermore, fit matters. Your hiking apparel shouldn’t be hugging so tight that it hinders your range of motion, making it uncomfortable for you to navigate the twists and turns of your trail. So, absolutely no jeans, and especially no skinny jeans! Not only will you be awkwardly stiff, but you’ll also be sweltering. Looser clothing will allow air to easily get in to cool your skin and bring out excess heat as it leaves.

Versatility

Opting for premium equipment can get ridiculously expensive. Hence, we recommend getting clothes that can be used for many different situations. Some excellent staples include getting hiking button-up shirts with rollable long sleeves and convertible pants that be folded up to become shorts.

The Fundamentals

hiking clothing

Photo via Canva PRO

Here are several basic pieces of clothing that you’ll need to stock up on for all hiking trips.

Undergarments

As the layer closest to your body, choosing the appropriate material for your undergarments makes a huge difference. Instead of cotton, which remains a big no-no when hiking, we recommend sticking with polyester, nylon, and merino wool –– these materials help to move moisture away from the body, which prevents uncomfortable dampness and chafing.

Shirts

Wicking should be your main concern when choosing hiking shirts. Regardless if you’re planning on a spring or winter hike, a good hiking shirt should wick away sweat, whilst keeping your body comfortable and dry. In this case, we suggest choosing shirts made out of synthetic materials and merino wool.

Bottoms Or Pants

Feel free to choose the bottoms of your pleasing, whether that includes dresses, skirts, shorts, or pants –– as long as you’re able to move unrestricted, dry fast, and protect yourself from the elements. Moreover, taking into account potential environmental hazards –– such as sharp rocks, poison ivy, and ticks –– should play a crucial role in choosing the length and thickness of your bottoms. A general rule of thumb is to choose thin yoga pants for trails that involve rock scrambling, and thicker pants to protect your legs against trails with long, tall grasses.

Jackets

As extra barriers, jackets are to be chosen to match the conditions you expect to face on your hike. Nonetheless, you should always have a light, portable, compact jacket that’ll protect you from water and wind.

hiking shoes

Photo by Sorin Gheorghita on Unsplash

Socks

And yes, you got it –- no cotton socks as well! Cotton socks absorb sweat, which makes your feet stay damp and wet the entire hike. Over some time, this can lead to xcruciating blisters which may even cause you to stop hiking altogether.

Shoes

When choosing a pair of shoes, take note of the following three factors. First, choose one that is in line with your personal preference –– what do you prefer? Whilst others gravitate towards the simplest hiking sandals all-year-round, others may choose chunkier leather hiking boots even when going on leisure trails.

Secondly, evaluate the weather conditions that you’ll be hiking in. Harsher conditions, like rainfall and snowfall, will require waterproof, sturdy shoes or boots. On the other hand, you could wear anything during the summertime –– from hiking sandals to regular trainers.

Lastly, take note of the trail terrain. If you’re planning to hike on a regular leveled trail, a basic pair of trainers will suffice. However, as the trails become tougher and more mountainous, you’ll be needing a nonslip pair of boots with ankle protection, to avoid unpleasant and unnecessary falls.

Hats

Although often overlooked, hats hold crucial roles in bringing the whole outfit together. Whilst brimmed hats keep rain and sun out of your eyes, wool beanies help to insulate your head from the cold –– they’re staples all year round!

Seasonal Essentials

Depending on the demands of the weather, your clothing choices need to be adapted. The following are several clothing guidelines to take note of according to the season.

Spring And Fall

Although these are generally warmer seasons, the fluctuating temperatures they bring can cause significant clothing headaches. Instead, the key to approaching these well-prepared is to dress for versatility.

Let’s start from the ground up –– for footwear, choose hiking boots instead of trainers or sandals in case of low temperatures or muddy trail conditions from rain and snowmelt. These boots have added support and traction and keep your feet dry even on, the wettest days.

For bottoms, choose zip-off pants that can alternate between pants and shorts as and when you please. Next, select a long-sleeve hiking shirt with a breathable base layer that can button up or stay open. Lastly, bring an easily foldable, compact water-wind resistant will shelter you from the unforeseeable. Oh, don’t forget to bring a hat!

Summer

Prepare for the heat! Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UPF-protecting tops, light colors, bug-protective clothing, quick-drying and breathable materials –– Anything that will keep you cool and dry. Don’t forget the sunblock!

Winter

While it is the harshest weather to hike, winter is extremely beautiful to witness. The essential approach is to dress in tons of layers –– especially those with powerful insulating properties. Start with a base layer that contains insulating properties such as synthetic materials or wool. Then, layer it with a removable, insulating middle coat. Lastly, top it all off with a snug windproof, and waterproof jacket. Don’t forget to throw in a pair of good hiking boots, warm hiking socks, a cozy beanie, and a pair of handy gloves.

Conclusion

Always remember: it’s function first, fashion second. Ensuring safety and preparedness start long before you step foot into the trail requires months of careful planning and factoring in all the different demands of your hike. We hope that you’ve gained significant insights from our tips and that you’re now ready to conquer your next adventure!

Lipari is the main island of the Sicilian archipelago (South of Italy) of the Aeolian islands. The island is full of life, especially during the summer, and is suitable even for families with children. Is the perfect destination for whoever is looking for an eco-tourism experience and for whoever wants to relax, immersing himself in the culture and the island’s nature.

An island rich in culture, with a millennial history

A view of the castle of Lipari at the sunset

For whoever loves culture and history, but also for whoever wants to deepen his/her knowledge about the origins of the islands, is possible to visit the Archaeological Museum Luigi Bernabò Brea. In this museum is possible to find several artefacts from the Neolithic period until the Medieval age. The museum is located in an ancient fortified town, that includes also the Castle of Lipari.

The castle is located on the top of the Acropolis. Nearby is possible to find the cathedral of San Bartolomeo, the site of particular historic interest. The church was built by the Normans, following the reconquest of the island, for subtracting it from the Arab domain. Inside is possible to find different pieces of art, like for example “U Vascidduzzu“, a silver reproduction of a vessel that also contains a relic of the Saint.

Another place that you cannot miss is Belvedere Quattrocchi, one of the most famous places on the island, where at the sunset you can admire an amazing view. Belvedere Quattrocchi is located four kilometres away from the main town.

Other attractions of the islands are the Caoline Caves and the Thermal Baths of San Calogero. You can visit these places during one of the trek routes on the island, some of which will be suggested later.

A holiday for relaxing and hiking

Lipari is an island with rich flora and if you love nature you can’t miss visiting the reserves and natural parks. You can’t lose the opportunity to visit the Lipari volcano, in the Serra Pirrera Reserve, where you can admire the ancient crater that is not working anymore.

For whoever wants to combine relaxation on the uncontaminated beaches of Lipari with some healthy physical activity shouldn’t miss trying hikings. On the island there are different routes, accessible on foot and some of them even by bike or e-bike.

A trek that you cannot absolutely miss is the one on the tracks of antiquities that passes by the Caolino Caves and arrives at the ancient thermal baths of San Calogero. This is probably the most charming path on the entire island and from the west coast you can observe an astonishing landscape, surrounded by rich greenery. The duration of this path is more or less four hours.

Another mandatory itinerary is the one until Punta Della Crapazza, in the southern part of the island, which you can reach with a short walk. From this point you can admire an amazing panorama with an incredible view of the crater of Vulcano and the Peninsula of Vulcanello.

Another interesting hike is the one of Guardia di Pirata, on mount Guardia, which once was used as a surveillance spot and sighting pirates. The path has a duration of four hours and is surrounded by numerous species of plants and butterflies.

One last hike that we suggest is the one on the peninsula of Monterosa, a route that starts from Lipari and it ends in the village of Canneto. The duration of this path is approximately two hours and the hill offers a rich and varied blooming, especially during the spring.

An authentic cuisine, with food prepared with fresh ingredients

On the island is possible to find an ancient culinary culture, whose key elements consist of genuine products like capers, sun-dried tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, accompanied by fresh fish.

In Lipari, you can taste local specialities produced with these natural ingredients, like the eolian redfish soup, the swordfish rolls, the sweet and sour rabbit, the liparota salad, and the “cunzato” bread. This latter specialty consists of a slice of bread soak in extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with cherry tomatoes, cheese, basil, cappers, olives, anchovies in olive oil, and oregano.

About desserts, you cannot miss tasting sesamini biscuits, produced with sesame seeds, accompanied by a glass of Malvasia wine.

Eco-friendly accommodations, surrounded by nature

For what regards accommodation, we suggest you two eco-friendly facilities on the island that you can book via Ecobnb.

The Cottage Atollo Monte Rosa Lipari is a typical aeolian house from which you can enjoy an amazing view of the uncontaminated blue of the Sicilian sea. This eco-cottage is the ideal starting point for hikes so is suitable for whoever loves nature and trekking.

The house Al Numero Zero is an organic farmhouse surrounded by the aeolian countryside, among gardens and olive groves, where you can practice rural tourism on foot, by bike and even with a donkey.

If after reading this guide on Lipari you are curious about this amazing island, don’t hesitate and book your next holiday!

Hiking trips are great fun! Not only will you get to visit many impressive countries and areas such as San Juan Pie de Puerto when signing up for a Camino Frances. But you also get to explore areas that are hard to get to without hiking, enjoy being outside and it’s great for your fitness. There are many hikes that you can sign up for, from a day hike to a couple of days and even a week or longer. Depending on your ability and your enjoyment of hiking, certain ones are more suited to different levels of ability and interest. So what should you consider before going on a hiking trip? Below we look into four considerations.

Make sure you have enough time

We touched on it above but the main thing to consider when booking a hiking trip is the amount of time you have. Remember, the distance you walk in front is potentially the distance you will need to travel back if you are doing a round trip. If you are signing up for a hiking trip online, they should give you an indication of how long the hike will be, the distance, and the altitude you will be hiking at. If you are going to do your own hike, then read up on the reviews of people who have attempted the one you are doing as that will give you a good indication of the time it will take.

Take care of your feet

This one may be a little obvious but when on a hike you will be on your feet for a long time. The last thing you want to do is have your shoes rubbing or blister coming up on your toes. These can be extremely painful and ruin the hiking trip altogether. Before the trip gives your toenails a cut and purchase some wool-blend socks as these should help.

Check the weather conditions

Some hiking trips like these Camino de Santiago can last five, six, or even seven days. That is a very long time if you’ve packed badly and don’t have the correct equipment due to guessing the wrong weather. 14 days before, check the weather and start to pack accordingly, you can keep an eye on it as the trip comes nearer. You would rather be prepared and have too much than fail to be prepared. When looking up the weather, this can help you make an estimate of what the trail conditions will be like.

Read up on local regulations

If you are travelling abroad for your hiking trip, remember the rules may not be the same as the local hikes you may be used to. Therefore, before heading on your trip do your research on the local regulations that you should be following. Most will have their rules on their websites but if not, follow the rules you would normally follow.

When is your next hiking trip? Are you planning on going on one anytime soon? What things do you recommend to people going on their first hiking trip? Let us know in the comment box below.

It is fair to say that lives are hectic and we need a good holiday to refresh and escape from the daily grind. Most holidays offer this, but you may feel rushed to see ‘everything’ as you may only be somewhere for a week. It is a case of hotel to attraction, attraction to hotel. This is fine, but how much of a country do you actually see?

When you go on a good walking holiday you see the country with every step. Whether it is the West Highland Way to the Camino de Santiago, you’ll experience the history and realise the significance of the land.
You’ll take the trip at your pace, allowing you to stay longer in places without the conscious thought about not missing the bus back to where you are staying.

If you want to detox and appreciate the land, walking holidays are the way to go.

A terrace suspended between sea and sky, immersed in what looks like a palette of colors. Here we are in Sorrento, an authentic pearl not only of Campania but of the whole Belpaese.

Sunset. A look at its tufaceous promontory which plunges into the intense blue of the sea. Immediately it becomes clear why Sorrento has always been such a coveted and loved destination.

Probably founded by the Ancient Greeks, inhabited first by the Etruscans and then by the Romans, Sorrento has been a popular tourist destination since the nineteenth century, when it began to become a must for those looking for that typically Italian and romantic atmosphere.

What to see in Sorrento

Byron, Shelly, Tolstoy, Dickens, and Nietzsche are just some of those who have been fascinated by the unique beauty of Sorrento. Now it’s our turn. Let’s start exploring the town from its main square, dedicated to the poet Tasso. Here we can admire the Baroque Church of Maria del Carmine, the Correale Palace, and the splendid historic buildings. But above all we can mingle with the local people, starting to understand the authentic soul of Sorrento. The square is also the access point to the historic center of the town: from here starts a maze of characteristic streets, where we will find ancient artisan shops, shops, and excellent gelato parlors.

Continuing our exploration we cannot miss the Duomo, the picturesque Marina Grande, and the port of Marina Piccola.

The Villa Comunale stands in the garden of the Franciscan friars and is certainly one of the most beautiful spots in all of Sorrento. It’s perfect for enjoying the sea breeze and an incredible view over the entire Gulf.

What to eat in Sorrento

The beauty of Sorrento also passes through its flavors. There is, for example, the lemon. It’s one of the symbols of this Campania town, and we can taste it in typical sweets and the classic limoncello. Then there are many fresh fish dishes, Provolone del Monaco cheese and, of course, the gnocchi alla sorrentina.

A sustainable vacation

But how to make our holiday in Sorrento more respectful of the environment? Nothing easier! We can arrive by train without too much stress: from Naples, easily reachable from any city, the Circumvesuviana station departs, arriving in Sorrento. The ticket costs less than 4 euros. We have many options for a green stay: we can sleep in one of the comfortable rooms of the Hotel Villa Giovanna, allow ourselves a night away from everything in Villa Carolina, or in the Holiday Home Gaia Sorrento, or opt for the Family House Terrace accommodation.

Path of God

There is no shortage of opportunities to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature. We recommend visiting the mysterious Vallone Dei Mulini, organizing a boat ride that includes the Blue Grotto of Capri, the protected marine area of Punta Campanella, or Lattari Mountains Natural Park. And how can we not talk about one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world? The Path of Gods takes us to the discovery of the Amalfi Coast, admiring breathtaking views. The path connects Agerola with Positano.

This protected area offers a great diversity of landscapes, shaped over the centuries by its inhabitants. The Opale coast features dunes and sandy bays, including the two spectacular cliffs Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez. Inland, in the Boulonnais region, lies the rural heart of the park with the Artois hills and magical villages.

The area to the northwest of the park presents the Audomarois marsh, the last cultivated marshland in France. The Opale Natural Park also has a beautiful cultural heritage represented by white chalk houses and rural torches houses. Numerous marked trails cross the park, allowing hikers to discover a well-preserved environment.

The beautiful beaches of Calais and the Opale Coast offer wild landscapes and beautiful views of the Manica Channel. They extend over 120 km.  They are a great place to go for walks. It is also ideal for numerous sporting and leisure activities. For example sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, kite surfing, jet-skiing, horse riding

We recommend Cap Blanc-Nez which overlooks the North Sea. From there, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the white cliffs of Dover from the English coast in favourable weather conditions. They are about forty kilometres from Cap Blanc-Nez. Continue on foot to Cap Gris-Nez via the village of Wissant. Go along the coast of white cliffs over 100 metres high that drop down to sandy beaches. Along the beaches, from Cap Blanc-Nez to Cap Gris-Nez, you can see a series of impressive German bunkers. They were created during the occupation of France to besiege the UK during World War II. Another interesting excursion is to start at Cap Gris-Nez. You can walk along the cliffs to Audresselles in the direction of Boulogne sur mer. You can also stop by Ambleteuse and Wimereux. In Audresselles you will have the chance to visit the local flea market on Sundays.

Calais, located in the north of France, is one of the few cities in the world that lies in the middle of three capital cities: London, Paris and Brussels. It overlooks the Strait of Dover. It is at the narrowest point of the English Channel, and it is the closest city to England. The symbol of the city is ‘Le Six Bourgeois‘, created by Rodin in 1895. Calais is a city known for its World War II history and is home to the World War II Museum, which is housed in a former German Nazi bunker. It offers interesting insights into the events surrounding the conflict. Do not miss the Museum of Fine Arts which houses works of art by Rodin and 20th-century masterpieces by Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso. The Calais Lighthouse and Town Hall are also worth a visit.

Take a break at one of the local “friteries” by the sea

The local cuisine of the Nord and Pas-de-Calais expresses two main influences: Flemish and Norman. In Calais and the various villages of the Opale Coast, it is typical to find numerous “Friterie“. There you can enjoy the best local fries with many sauces, super burgers with local meat. Try “l’americain with fricadelle” at one of the most famous friteries “La Friterie des Nations” on the beach in Calais. As dessert take a ‘glace à l’italienne à la vanille’ at one of the stalls along the seafront. If you prefer something a little more gourmet, try the fish and seafood at La Sirène in Cap Gris-Nez, one of the world’s most end-of-the-world headlands on the Opale Coast.

Other local delicacies you cannot miss are Mussels combined with various sauces, Flemish Carbonade (pieces of beef braised with onions and simmered in beer for preservation with brown sugar), chicory, cock with beer (flambéed with juniper and cooked in beer), faluche (round bread), flamiche (a pancake topped with melted butter), fricadelle (a sausage-like mixture of potato meat, onions, mustard and eggs), and rabbit with plums. In addition, there are various sweet specialities including cracker, shell and ‘tart au chuque‘. The region also offers numerous cheeses such as the heart of Arras. To end your journey in a good way, enjoy a crab salad sandwich at sunset along the coast of Boulogne sur mer.
