In Veneto, there is an area often underestimated by tourists but rich in charm and hidden treasures, with poetic atmospheres that are sometimes hostile but always full of beauty.

A journey through Fratta Polesine, Rovigo, the Po Delta, and the surrounding areas is a unique experience where the past intertwines with the present and nature offers enchanting landscapes and moments of calmness. In this article, we will immerse ourselves in the wonders of this region, discovering places to visit, activities to do, and food to savor for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Venetian tradition.

As a base for our journey in Polesine, we choose Castelguglielmo. It’s a small town perfect for relaxing at the end of our days. Here, we are welcomed by Andrea. He’s the host of La Piccola Casa di Via Ricotti, an ecosustainable and recently renovated accommodation that provides every comfort and has a small forest in front of it.

Our journey in Polesine. First stop: Fratta Polesine

Fratta Polesine, which dates back to the Roman era, has a captivating and extensive history. As you stroll through the streets, you’ll come across remnants of the past in every nook and cranny, from the ruins of ancient medieval walls to the Castle of Fratta, a testament to the centuries of domination and struggles that have shaped the area’s history. The Civic Museum, situated in the heart of the historical center, showcases valuable archaeological artifacts and artworks that narrate the rich cultural heritage of Fratta Polesine. The necropolises of Frattesina, one of Europe’s most significant protohistoric sites, are a must-see.

However, the village’s centerpiece is Villa Badoèr, also known as La Badoera. It’s a UNESCO heritage site, designed by the renowned architect Antonio Palladio.

Rovigo, a City with Ancient Roots

Rovigo is a city with ancient roots that date back to Roman times. Walking through its streets, you can admire historic buildings, elegant squares, and monuments that narrate the city’s thousand-year history. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, with the Palazzo del Governo and the Donà Tower, is the pulsating heart of Rovigo. A visit to the Museum of the Great Rivers offers an engaging experience about the importance of rivers in the evolution of this region. The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Succorso, with its octagonal Rotonda and the Longhena bell tower, is an attraction of great interest and a symbol of the city.

The Nature of Polesine, a Unique Territory Between Land and Water

Polesine is a unique territory characterized by the fusion of land and water. Crossed by the Po, Adige, and Brenta rivers, it is one of the most fertile regions in Italy, with enchanting river landscapes, marshes, and rice fields as far as the eye can see. The Regional Park of the Po Delta is an exceptional nature reserve and a paradise for nature lovers. Exploring its panoramic trails offers the opportunity to admire the numerous migratory birds that stop here and discover the rich flora and unique fauna. A boat trip along the canals of the Po Delta is a magical experience, allowing you to get closer to the natural beauty of this extraordinary area.

Local Culinary Traditions

A visit to these lands would be incomplete without savoring the local cuisine. Fratta Polesine, Rovigo, and the surrounding areas boast a gastronomic tradition of great value. From “bigoli” with duck to risotto with eels, but also mussels, clams, and various varieties of radicchio… There are many delicacies that delight the palate!

With its discreet charm and an extraordinary combination of history, nature, and culture, Polesine captivates the eyes and the heart. It is hard to forget the Po Delta’s landscapes, its people’s hospitality, and the discretion of Rovigo and the surrounding villages.

The breeze from the lake, and the olive trees under the sun: Malcesine awaits you in this enchanted setting. It’s one of the pearls of Lake Garda and the perfect destination for your next holiday of relaxation, sport, and sustainability.

We are located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, where the Veneto borders with Trentino. It is here that, suspended between the water of the lake and the mountain, the medieval village of Malcesine develops around the Scaliger Castle, the symbol of the Venetian town. Getting here means walking through the characteristic cobbled alleys and squares, passing through suggestive doors and archways, and discovering tiny, colorful shops, ateliers, and restaurants. The gaze flows between the picturesque views of the historic center to the rocky spur on which the Castle stands, from the small port and the beaches to the top of Mount Baldo. And this is how, in an instant, the irresistible charm of Malcesine conquers you.

What to do and see in Malcesine? Despite the village’s small size, there are countless activities to try and monuments to admire. There really is something for all tastes!
You certainly cannot miss Scaliger Castle. Now also a renowned location for weddings, it’s the seat of the Natural History Museum of Monte Baldo and Garda. Inside there is the former gunpowder magazine, dedicated to W. Goethe. The room preserves the drawings made by the poet on the occasion of his journey in Italy. After visiting the interior, you can climb the tower: a panoramic point that leaves you breathless!
Always in the historic center, you can also visit the Palazzo dei Capitani, the seat of the Scaligeri governors and, later, the Captain of the Lake. It was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries on top of ancient Roman buildings.

Just 4 kilometers from Malcesine’s center, the small village of Cassone overlooks the lake, in a truly picturesque atmosphere. But what makes Malcesine even more unique and special is the nature that surrounds it and which offers endless possibilities for outdoor experiences. A must for all travelers who pass through here is the cable car. In a few minutes, you will reach the 1800 meters of Monte Baldo, aboard rotating cabins that offer a 360-degree panorama. You can carry your bike with you, then go downhill, and follow the various high-altitude itineraries. Otherwise, you can venture into the various walking paths to discover the mountain. Mountain biking, trekking, but also water sports, and paragliding. What will you choose?

Hundreds of paths, forest roads, mule tracks, via ferratas allow us to enter the woods, meadows and rocky mountains of Belluno Dolomites National Park. Established in 1990 and Unesco heritage since 2009, the Park, still little known today, reserves shows of great beauty every day.

What to see in Belluno Dolomites National Park

Belluno Dolomites National Park extends for more than 31 thousand hectares in the southernmost part of Dolomites, within the province of Belluno. What strikes first of all is the great variety of environments: from broad-leaved woods to coniferous forests, from high-altitude shrubs to grasslands, in a territory that develops from 400 to 2500 meters above sea level. It is therefore not surprising that there is so much to do and see inside the park.

A gateway is represented by Lake Mis. Artificial, it takes its name from the river that forms it and fascinates for the perfect combination of colors and for how Monti del Sole are reflected in its water. From here it is then easy to reach the Cadini del Brenton, an enchanting set of small waterfalls that connect a series of caves. Do not miss the Bus del Buson, a suggestive canyon with looming rock walls. There is also the wonderful Cajada forest, also known as the “Bosco della Serenissima”.

Belluno

Nature offers an incredible spectacle every step you take, leaving you speechless in front of an uncontaminated beauty. But the Belluno Dolomites National Park also preserves fascinating villages, real artistic and historical jewels and enchanting towns. How not to visit Belluno, an enchanting Alpine city with beautiful squares and fascinating buildings? Feltre awaits you with its museums, its theater and its unique atmosphere. Also worth seeing at any cost is the Certosa di Vedana, a beautiful monastic complex, and the Mines of Valle Imperina, an ancient mining center that marked the history of these places.

The animals you can meet while walking in the park

The great variety of environments allows the Park to host a rich fauna. 115 species of birds, 3,000 chamois and more than 2,000 roe deer, 100 species of butterflies make these places even more fascinating.

The flowers and trees of Belluno Dolomites National Park

One of the main scientific reasons for the birth of the Belluno Dolomites National Park is the great wealth and rarity of its flora. Since 1700, important botanists from all over the world went to these places to discover rare and native species. Rhododendrons, thistles, edelweiss and 1000 other wonderful species await you.

The flavors you must taste in the villages and towns

Cheeses of Belluno area

Radicchio, cheeses from alpine farm, polenta, roe deer meat, casunziei ravioli, pumpkin and grappa: the Belluno table does not disappoint anyone, combining the rustic character of mountain with pure and simple flavors.

Your green stay in the park

Eco-friendly stay in Belluno Dolomites National Park

In Belluno Dolomites National Park you will find numerous eco-sustainable accommodation facilities. For example, there is Casa Novecento, in Feltre, the B&B Terra e Nubi which offers free bikes, the welcoming Villa Chele, the Altonon Hostel and the Tiny House of the B&B Giardini dell’Ardo in Belluno.

The hike trails you can’t miss

The Park is crossed by the Alte Vie delle Dolomiti n. 1 and n. 2, a network of over 200 kilometers of CAI trails and numerous other routes. Starting from Val Canzoi you can reach the Feltre bivouac, on the tracks of the chamois and through breathtaking landscapes. The via ferratas of the Schiara are wonderful, but very demanding. For the less experienced, on the other hand, I recommend the C.A.I. No. 523.

Walking among dry-stone walls and fields of potatoes, we discover old paths of prehistorical villages, immersed in the harmony of nature and local tastes. So we knew Rotzo and the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, together with Federica, owner of the eco-friendly BnB Hémmara.

Only looking at the place names in this land, we become aware of the story of this fascinating melting pot of languages and cultures. Rotzo, for instance, comes from “Rotz” which means “rock, cliff, reef” in old Cimber language. Hémmara too has a Cimbrian name, the name of a flower, the HelleboreI choose to call my B&B Hémmara–  told us the owner Federica Capriz – because I especially like this little flower coming out in winter; it’s a simple flower which mirrors my hospitality.

Hemmara is also the name of a small village near Albaredo di Rotzo, where forests in winter are full of these flowers.

Hémmara has the Cimbrian name of a flower, the Hellebore. This little flower comes out in winter near Rotzo.

Who were Cimbers? They were Bavarian loggers, peasants, and farmers. Around year one thousand, they were called from Vincentian bishops to colonize the land. It’s in this way that this German language was spoken as well in Rotzo, the oldest municipality in the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni.

Our weekend to discover this place starts here, in an old house in Albaredo di Rotzo which has now become a wonderful eco-friendly bed & breakfast.

Rotzo is the smallest and oldest village in the land, like they demonstrate the iron age findings in Bostel di Rotzo. Today it is an accessible park, very attractive for tourists especially thanks to the archeological site with restaurants and the multimedia museum: “Museo Archeologico Sette Comuni“.

Rotzo's nature, Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, Asiago, Italy

Campagna di Rotzo, photo by Caterina Zancanaro

Moving southern, we find Campagna di Rotzo, one of the renewed potatoes De.Co. production spots. A green sunny highland with a network of pedestrian paths, rural streets and small trails leading to wild nature, meeting waterfalls, small churches and breathtaking terraced landscapes on the way. On the other side of the village, spruce and beech forests grow and it is possible to have a deeper look to legendary places, like Altaburg and Altar Knotto, reachable with on a CAI path. Going up in the mountains, we can see the fields meadows of alpine pastures, which is possible to visit through the Altipiani Cimbri pedestrian path. This wonderful path has been built to practice Nordic skiing in winter and starts at Rifugio Campolongo.

So we leave B&B Hémmara by feet, walking among pathways and ancient mule-tracks immersed in Rotzo’s countryside.

An amazing landscape made of green grasses and white stone terraced. On these green hills, between 800 and 1000 meters in altitude, they grow from generations the famous “Rotzo’s potatoes”. This tradition is celebrated from over 40 years every first Sunday of September with the “Rotzo’s Potato Party” – Federica told us.

The cultivated landscape too has left some signs of the presence of the old Cimber, living in this place for centuries. White stone slabs delimitate each farmer’s land. Dry-stone walls made up terraces to soften the altitude and constitute the border between the several pedestrian and bike paths.

Trekking map of Rotzo

We walk along the fields, following the small pathways, until we reach Bostel di Rotzo, archeological site dating back to the Venetian-Rhoetian period. Here historical abbot Agostino Dal Pozzo di Rotzo, around the end of the year 800, discovered some remainings of an Iron-age building, which has interested researchers for a long time. Even today, during September, some researchers from the University of Padua gather to come to light new findings.

At Bostel di Rotzo it is possible to visit the model of an iron age prealpine house, which was built following the instructions given from the archaeological researches. Wooden walls and thatched roof, the old house is tremendously suggestive and catch immediately the attention of every visitor, child included. It is possible to enter the house and start the journey in a prehistoric life atmosphere, thanks to the use of recent technologies such as augmented and virtual reality (more information on bosteldirotzo.it, in Italian).

Here in Bostel di Rotzo history and landscape goes hand in hand, giving visitors a breathtaking view on mountains and on Valle dell’Astico. But it does not stop here. The Bostel Archeological Park is a must do wine and food experience for traditional tastes and receipts lovers.

With this in mind, Federica invited us to try the Baita del Bostel‘s delicious dishes, cooked by passionate chefs/researchers. With a few local ingredients, they lead us to discover Altopianese kitchen’s tastes and flavors.

In the plate, we find the food of the season. The dandelion has been collected by the chef from the grass and it goes with every plate of the daily menu. Potatoes have been grown in a close farm and are served as gnocchi, filled half-moons or strugolo, a typical dish of farmer’s tradition. Then there are alpine cheese, meats of animals grown in the Highland Meadows… We even try considera, a pale local porridge, made of potatoes, flour, butter, onion and a little bit of cinnamon: delicious!

Interview to Federica, from B&B Hémmara

During lunch, among tastes and scents from Baita del Bostel, Federica tells us how her eco-friendly Bed & Breakfast was born. But also the must-visit trekking paths in the Highland… Here’s what she told us:

How does B&B Hémmara come to life?

B&B Hémmara was born some years ago from the restructuring of an old historical building in the ancient village of Albaredo di Rotzo. Following a suggestion from an expertise person, I decided to save the building paying very attention to bio-architecture and the place’s identity.

Initially, I thought of a holiday house, but then I choose Bed & Breakfast. This choice has been way better, giving me the possibility to establish direct contact with my guests, to know them, to live with them important moments of sharing. I just love telling them the many beauties of my land and invite them to discover these beauties; taking care of the b&b and the breakfast, so that they could live a pleasant experience.

B&B-Hémmara Rotzo Bedroom

B&B-Hémmara Rotzo Bedroom

Local and Bio Breakfast Book Crossing Corner

What eco-sustainability criteria you adopted?

At B&B Hemmara I came out with different strategies to improve sustainability. First, recycling: I do it and I always recommend my guests do the same (I wrote it everywhere!).

I bought a double entrance washing machine, in a way that for the laundry I can use the water warmed up by the sun, through solar panels. I also have an energy-saving boiler which uses the water pre-warmed by solar panels.

When I restructured the building, I also create an important isolation space of 12 centimeters, and I choose double-glass windows. In this way, I can almost totally avoid heat losses in the house. In fact, when I put off warming, the internal temperature remains constant for a couple of days.

I eliminate single-dose and single dose packaging. Jams are served in glass boxes. In the toilet, there are dispensers for soaps and shampoo. In this way, I significantly reduced waste.

I choose soaps with natural and bio ingredients. For breakfast, I like buying local products, such as yogurt, milk, cheese, ricotta from Pennar cheese factory and other local farms.

It’s with small things that we can make a difference!

BnB Hémmara's Room with a window on nature Local and Bio Ingredients Breakfast

What does it mean to you to be an Eco bnb?

Being an eco-bnb for me is having an edge. I realized choosing green is not difficult at all: it’s all in the products you buy, for example. Guests notice you clearly make a choice and they appreciate it, this makes me feel on top.

Tourism could have a great impact on the environment, this is why it’s crucial to make responsible choices. From a single individual perspective, it’s basically effortless, but it could make a great difference for the Planet.

What about your future projects?

I would love to create a small wellness area inside the B&B with IR rays sauna. Apart for this, I’m already working to create an e-car charging spot and a bike rental and deposit for all our two wheels lovers 🙂

What are in your opinion the must-visit places for your guests?

With the new slow mobility pathways, it’s lovely to walk along all Rotzo’s countryside. They give the possibility to enjoy the view even to families with small children.

Very wonderful hiking is Altar Knotto, a giant stone suspended on a cliff which gives a view on Val d’Astico. It’s a panoramic and evocative walk, a magic place.

Altar Knotto, photo by Caterina Zancanaro

Another not-to-lose trekking is the one on Pach Waterfalls, very beautiful to see in spring with the first thaw.

I suggest as well to discover the First World War findings in Forte di Campolongo and in Forte Verena. From here, you have a sight on all the Highlands and the surrounding valleys. Near Rifugio Campolongo, it deserves a visit the natural Sciason sinkhole, a cave with a deep cut in the stone.

You can walk house by house among green fields and grazing cows, giving a look at the working of milk still following the old tradition and try local products in the place where they were made.

In the Highland, there are as well two very interesting parks: Selv-Art, reachable by feet from the B&B, and the Sojo Park, in Covolo di Lusiana. They are amazing destinations for nature and land-art lovers. Once entered in the park, you can see several installations and pieces of arts realized with different materials, from wood to stone, from metal to ceramic.

The Silence Pathway in Campomuletto a Gallio is a ring path along which a lot of different art installations have been set. They invite us to think about the value of peace.

Thank you, Federica, for the interview!

The northernmost shore of Lake Garda offers its visitors several beaches where they can enjoy the sun. Small and stony or wide with grassy meadows, more or less frequented, they are always an oasis of relaxation. In Riva del Garda you can find the Sabbioni Beach, loved by foreigners but also by the local landscape that can be admired from here and for the many services offered; Corno di Bo ‘is instead a wilder beach, in Torbole, reachable only by bike or motorbike; the small beach of Navene, in Veneto, is far from chaos and really fascinating. Also in Limone sul Garda there’s the Museum of Fishermen where you can relive the ancient traditions of the place.

Imagine a travel experience different from those offered by the classic travel agencies. An authentic, immersive and eco-sustainable experience through Italy. This is what Britt Voorsmit proposes. After graduating in International Tourism Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands), with a thesis that explored the experiences of Ecobnb in the Veneto countryside.

“I would like to offer exclusive one-to-one travel services.” – Britt tells me. “Immersive and sustainable travel experiences in Veneto and northern Italy“. It’s here, in fact, that Britt decided to move to live. Attracted by the landscapes of the Venetian Lagoon, the unique culture and nature of Italy, and the love that it has encountered in our country. To build its itineraries Britt collaborates with Ecobnb and with the best eco-sustainable realities, which he personally meets. Let’s get to know you better in this interview.

Britt in the Italian countryside

Britt, writing in the Italian countryside

Where does your passion for travel come from?

This started already when I was young. My family likes to travel a lot and I developed the same love for seeing different places. Italy was one of my favorites because of the culture, the foods, “the good life” people seemed to live. I started my Bachelor study in Tourism Management and Consultancy and chose the Italian language specialization. I got to know more about Italy and wanted to dive deeper and deeper. It resulted in my thesis study where I interviewed local small business owners and this grew into the project of Imtrex Travel. I listened, I observed, I reflected and I knew that I wanted to work with these local small business owners and connect them with travelers that are looking for a meaningful travel experience.

What is your idea of sustainable travel?

To travel sustainably for me is to travel with awareness. Be aware where you are, be aware what local people do, be aware of the nature you are in, be aware of all the senses that you feel. I believe that subsequently the rest follows by itself. An example of travel with awareness is to listen to the story behind your breakfast in your accommodation from the one who prepared it. In this way you are open-minded and you create understanding. Being aware of what you have in front of you and where it comes from might make you choose what you pick in a more reasonable way. Of course, you would need the right locals who would like to share this with you.

I believe that the sustainable travel behavior of people should come from the inside out instead of the outside in. Therefore, with Imtrex Travel I try to give each traveler their own Immersive Travel Experience by connecting them with local suppliers who offer this. In this way I hope to contribute to this idea of sustainable travel. Contribute by inspiring people to search for these kind of meaningful travel experiences, not only in Italy, but everywhere!

What has fascinated you most of Italy and you want to convey to those who visit it for the first time?

What fascinates me most about Italy is the richness and great variety in nature, arts, architecture and history, I think that’s what Italy is also known for. It’s for example amazing how you can combine different landscapes in one itinerary. In 2018 my father and sister visited me in Italy and in only 4 days we went from a light jacket in Venice to the snow covered mountains in ski clothing! Additionally, travelers will be amazed by how many traditional habits and customs the people of Italy have that are not very well known and explored. These traditions in combination with the rich landscape diversity are fascinating in that each visit offers a unique look and lasting impression of Italy.

Why did you choose Ecobnb as your partner? What struck you about the green accommodations you visited?

Ecobnb is a beautiful and inspiring concept because it is different than the generalized platforms where competition is based on prices. When I started visiting Ecobnb accommodations I found out that it is on the Ecobnb platform where you can find those small-scale enterprises with rich backgrounds and traditional habits. These people want to share their quality and what they stand for instead of seeing tourists only as a money flow. These people are all aware of what they’re doing and all had their own road throughout their lives to get there, with eco-friendly results. This is something very valuable and I knew that if I would send travelers to Ecobnb accommodations they will guaranteed have a meaningful experience. As such, I knew that Ecobnb would be the perfect partner!

Cycling tourism in Italy has a potential value of 3.2 billion euros. The northern Adriatic coast is leading this green revolution. This is confirmed by several initiatives to build new cycling infrastructures. The new track between Bibione (Veneto) and Lignano Sabbiadoro (Udine) is already a must-do for sweet mobility lovers.

Italy and Europe are looking at cycling tourism with increasing attention. More and more people choose bike to go around. That is why initiatives for cycling tourists are growing fast. Great for us and for the environment. With the chance to discover hidden spots from a healthy and ecologic perspective.

From Bibione to Lignano Sabbiadoro: a “bridge” for cycling tourism.

View of the sea at Lignano Sabbiadoro, at twilight time. The sky is between violet and red and reflects on the water. You can see a building on a pier.

Sunset at Lignano Sabbiadoro

This positive trend is highlighted by the set up of a new bike lane, between the two most famous location on north Adriatic. The beaches of Bibione and Lignano are not separated by Tagliamento river anymore. Thanks to a steamboat that carries bikes, crossing the river is more easy than ever. Good news for those up to cycling on holiday. They will have more chances of exploring such a biodiverse and wonderful natural area.

This growth in the number of services for cycling tourists and their accessibility are a great opportunity for the regions of Friuli Venezia-Giulia and Veneto. Add the sea, the beaches, the lagoon and the untouched area of Tagliamento and it’s done! Adventure in such marvelous places is worth it.

Green leaf on the water

The so-called “passo barca” (literally, boat pass) actually links two paths. 9 km “Adriatic walk” along Bibione’s coastline plus 8 km in Lignano Sabbiadoro. 17 km more of bike lane, added to other existent 240 km in the hinterland. Meaning that one could ride from Venice from the bike path of “Alpe d’Adria“, that connects Grado (Friuli) and Salzburg (Austria). An enviable infrastructure that makes truly happy cycle and environment lovers.

The boat to Lignano Sabbiadoro leaves from the pier of the evocative lighthouse in Bibione. It arrives on the dock Marina Uno in Riviera. It’s an ideal starting point to explore the backcountry of the region.

Feeling connected

Passo barca” connecting Bibione and Lignano Sabbiadoro is the first of many news. Once you get off the boat, reach the wild and untouched beach of Brussa, near Venezia. How to? Just walk down a new exciting path. From Bibione Pineda harbour, take another steamboat heading to the dock in Brussa, nearby the Environmental Museum of Vallevecchia.

That in Brussa is considered an eco-beach, because human hand is basically inexistent there. The adventure will make you discover lagoon’s typical flora and fauna. Herons and cormorants leave here in perfect harmony, among rushes. A short but extraordinary journey.

The untouched area of river Tagliamento

Beside the boats, there’s a way to reach the area via train, from Verona to Latisana, Lignano and Bibione. And of course, it can be the entrance gate to a cycling-tourism experience as well.

Are you a bike-rider? Or do you want to try a new style of eco-friendly vacation? Don’t wait any longer: try this unforgettable path! Look for your eco-friendly accomodation in the area and complete the package of a perfectly sustainable holiday.

Between labyrinths and water lilies, enchanted roses and ponds, educational farm and views of the Mincio river, we suggest you a weekend in the nature of the Sigurtà Park, in Valeggio sul Mincio, to be discovered slowly, on foot or by bike.

Whether you choose autumn with the warm colors of the foliage, or spring to admire the blooming tulips, every season is right to immerse yourself in the nature of the Sigurtà Park. A stone’s throw from Borghetto in Valeggio sul Mincio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Sigurtà Park is one of the most beautiful parks in our country. In this haven of peace, set between Verona and Mantua, and very close to Lake Garda, nature and romance are guaranteed. It is also the perfect place for an outdoor weekend with children. We have chosen to visit the park on a warm October weekend, and we will tell you about the 10 experiences that you can’t miss!

1. Discover one of the most beautiful parks in Europe

Sigurtà Park: discovering an enchanting place in Italy

Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy

It was the most beautiful in Italy in 2013, and awarded by the European Garden Award 2015 as the second most beautiful park in Europe. Sigurtà Park extends for about six hundred thousand square meters, on the edge of the moraine hills near Lake Garda. It was the garden of Villa Maffei, built by a student of Palladio. In 1859 it was also the headquarters of Napoleon III.

If in autumn you can admire the shades of red, yellow and orange of the foliage, in spring the park surprises with its blooming tulips, a natural wonder like few others in the world. A million tulips, of 300 different varieties, in addition to hyacinths, daffodils, and an avenue with thirty thousand roses. The main blooms that can be admired during the seasons are: tulips, roses, water lilies, asters and irises. But do not underestimate the beauty of the park in the fall, which – as Albert Camus says – is a second spring.

2. Try the soft mobility

Sigurtà Park, Italy, by bike

You can decide to walk the park on foot, but also by bike, electric bike or special electric vehicles with four wheels. At the entrance to the park you have the opportunity to rent a bike (for those who have not taken it with you), the ebike, or a four-seater electric vehicle that also offers a guided tour of the park, through a narrating voice that will tell the story of the places that you’ll cross.

3. Admire ponds and water lilies

Sigurtà Park, Italy

Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy Sigurtà Park, Italy

Walking through the large expanse of lawn in the park we meet beautiful flowering ponds. Surrounded by weeping willows and beautiful trees whose autumn leaves are tinged with red, yellow and orange, the pond transports us into the magical atmosphere of an oriental garden. Inside the lake, among the flowering water lilies, there’s a Japanese carp. Walking through the park we discover many other stretches of water, some of which are hidden among the trees. The pools of water amplify the beauty of the park and reflect the nuances of the trees between a water lily and the other.

4. Get lost in the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park

the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park

the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park

Going through the labyrinth of Sigurtà Park is by far the most exciting experience of the whole visit. Surrounded by the green of the boxwood we follow the paths, making a mistake, trying and trying again, until we arrive at the panoramic tower at the center of the labyrinth, inspired by that of the park of Bois de Boulogne in Paris. Children can not resist the temptation to run through the green corridors, and to retrace the labyrinth several times. The panoramic tower at the center of the maze is the place to meet and where we admire the perfect geometry of the great plant sculpture from above.

5. Meet the farm animals

Sigurtà Park

Sheep, Tibetan goats, horses, donkeys and hens. In the ancient farm inside the Sigurtà park we discover different animals that we can observe, caress and photograph. An opportunity to get to know the habits of animals, take care of them and give them hay. Absolutely the children’s favorite experience. In another area of the park you can instead observe deer that graze in a group or go back to the sun. These beautiful animals have a coat that changes color according to the seasons.

6. Embrace the big oak

Sigurtà Park

Dave Bonta, via flickr

With its 400 years, the great oak is the oldest plant in the whole garden. Its immense foliage covers an area of almost 1000 square meters, and its trunk is so large that to embrace it we must be at least three.

7. Read the thoughts scattered in the park

Sigurtà Park

Among the green of the boxwoods, we discover a large stone engraved with the verses of the American poet Samuel Ullman (1840-1924). It is a beautiful hymn to being young in spirit and heart. In another corner of the garden, on a large stone surrounded by ivy we read “the earth is one country: we are waves of the same sea, leaves of the same tree, flowers of the same garden”. A phrase that strikes me because it expresses very well the harmony that we breath in this place.

8. Visit one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Visit one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

A few minutes from the Sigurtà Park there’s Borghetto, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In this charming village, the ancient houses have been restored to become taverns and typical restaurants. The visit of the village lasts an hour, but every two steps you must stop to capture glimpses of flowers, and breathtaking views, such as the walls of the Scaliger that are reflected in the Mincio. Walking a short uphill stretch towards the woods, you can then reach the ancient manor of Borghetto, from which you can admire the landscape over the entire Mincio valley.

9. Taste Valeggio’s tortelli and other local specialties

Taste Valeggio's tortelli and other local specialties

A stone’s throw from the Sigurtà Park we find the historic center of Valeggio sul Mincio, the main town of the area. Here it is easy to reach the Pastificio Ramelli, where we can buy the famous tortellino pasta, in over twenty variations, from the classic one to the one with celery of Verona and Monteveronese cheese. Legend has it that the tortellini of Valeggio, also called “knot of love”, were born in 300. Inside the pastry, made with flour and eggs, there’s a stuffing of beef, pork, chicken, herbs, Bardolino wine and breadcrumbs. To discover all the secrets of the production of this excellent fresh pasta you can book, a few days in advance, a visit inside the bakery.

10. An eco-friendly holiday near the Sigurtà Park

Villa Pille, eco-friendly Bed and Breakfast near Valeggio Sul Mincio Italy Monte Vento eco-friendly farmhouse near Valeggio sul Mincio Italy An eco-friendly holiday near the Sigurtà Park

To experience the emotions of the Sigurtà Park, open every day from March to November with prices ranging from € 6.50 to € 12, it is possible to stay in different eco-sustainable accommodations. Nestled between fields and vineyards, in Monzambano, a five minute drive from Valeggio sul Mincio, there is the B&B Villa Pille, a true oasis of peace.
