Today we reach the beautiful Turkey, which is a natural bridge between East and West and has a long history, from the Hittites to the Ottomans. We go up to the south-west of the country, where incredible and pristine beaches, lively towns and impressive monuments await us.

Ready? We leave together for an unforgettable travel in Turkey, between seaside resorts where in summer tourists flock, rural locations where you can enjoy nature and authenticity, and amazing food everywhere you turn. Our destination is Kaya Valley and the nearby coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera.

To get there, the easiest way is certainly to arrive at Dalaman airport, not far from the villages of the area and the sea. Things to do, live and experience are many and it is not easy to tell about them: walking among the scents and colors of the bazaars, being amazed by the view of the islands of Fethiye, seeing the ghost town of Kayaköy, walking in nature that hides ancient tombs, dive into the blue sea. This area of Turkey is sure to get exciting, but let’s go with order and discover some of the things not to be missed.

The villages, the authentic Turkey

Here you can feel the essence of local life of these areas; they are small villages surrounded by mountains and greenery where life proceeds at a slow pace, in a relaxed atmosphere. But in Kaya, Hisaronu, and in the other towns there is still a large number of restaurants and bars, where you can taste local delicacies and watch the world goes by.

Kaya's bar, Turkey Hisaronu, Turkey's village

The beaches, pristine blue

Again, the choices are many, and it depends on personal taste: those who prefer more secluded beaches will find heaven in Gemiler, a set of marvelous bays and coves where there are also interesting archaeological finds; those who enjoy more the beach life, will choose the Fethiye Bay from which you also admire twelve beautiful islands. But how not to mention the Patara beach, south of Fethiye, with its 18 kilometers of beach and the chance to see loggerhead turtles, and of course the most photographed beach in Turkey, the one of Oludeniz, the Blue Lagoon.

Oludeniz, Turkey Patara beach, one of the most beautiful of Turkey

Fethiye, tourism, and archaeological sites

With its 147,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the area. It is located in the ancient Telmessos and is one of the most popular tourist centers in Turkey. My advice is to spend a day or two to visit the city, but never in August when tourists rush here. Although far from the authenticity of the inland villages, the city offers precious glimpses. Among the many restaurants and clubs, there is a lively and wonderful weekly market that retains its turkish character. Besides the aforementioned beaches and islands, Fethiye offers historical evidence that worth visiting, from the Telmessos rock tombs, the theater and the remains of the fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes.

The Lycian Way

One of the best ways to discover the area is walking along this trek, one of the most popular in the world. It is 540 km route, very challenging in some points, that goes from the sea to the mountain, representing a portal to the past. In the journey from Oludeniz to Antalya there are many ancient buildings, rock Tombs, and archaeological ruins dating back to the period of the Lycian people.

Where to stay in this unspoiled corner of Turkey

In the village of Kaya, not far from Fethiye and the Blue Lagoon, you can stay in a beautiful eco-sustainable accommodation. The Fig Garden offers travelers 2 beautiful and rustic cottages surrounded by a garden of fruit trees. You will be welcomed with a basket of local products and this is the perfect place for spending some relaxing days, without any stress. The cottages, which are equipped with solar panels and low-energy light bulbs, can be rented together or separately. Both have beautiful private terraces with a barbecue and they share a pool.

From the millennia-old palmenti used for wine production to cellars carved into the tuff rock. In this town, you can find anything from the labyrinth of narrow streets in the historic centre to the fabulous food and wine experience. Certainly, Pietragalla‘s wine palmenti, offer an exciting journey through Basilicata’s rural tradition. Here are 4 reasons why you will fall in love with this authentic gem in the heart of Southern Italy.

1. The Ancient ‘Caves’ of Basilicata: Pietragalla’s Wine Palmenti

To begin with, the village captures the essence of Lucanian winemaking tradition through its ancient palmenti. The term Palmento refers to the ancient act of crushing grapes and also the cave itself. They used these fascinating structures, numbering over a hundred, for grape crushing and fermentation. Without a doubt they represent an important historical and cultural heritage of Basilicata.

Strategically positioned in the southeast to help the fermentation of grape clusters. Pietragalla’s wine palmenti bear witness to the passion and importance of viticulture in the local community. Each family built its own palmento, excavating fermentation vats directly into the tuff rock, making each palmento a unique work of art.

the entrance to Pietragalla's wine palmenti

As we can see, today, the municipality is working to preserve this heritage by acquiring and restoring these historical gems. Out of the over one hundred still intact palmenti, sixty have been restored and are open to the public. We visited them with the expert guide Rocchina from Pietragalla Experience.

Each palmento consists of 3 tanks dedicated to crushing, fermentation, and drawing off. Stepping into one of these suggestive stone constructions, Rocchina points out the fermentation tank. It is entirely excavated and smoothed in the tuff, and then sealed with mortar. This tells stories of artisanal skill and ingenuity.

Pietragalla's wine palmenti from the front

They poured the grapes harvested from the surrounding vineyards into the crushing tank to be stomped on by bare feet. The must flowed through an opening in the lower cistern, designed for fermentation, and then into the last tank, dedicated to drawing off. Once the process was complete, they transferred the wine to wooden barrels and transported to the underground cellars in the village, carved into the heart of the historic centre.

Only one palmento is still active in its original function. The palmento of Antonio Nolè, a thirty-three-year-old agricultural science graduate proud to produce his organic wine here, following his grandfather’s precious teachings.

The simple and evocative architecture of the palmenti surrounded by vineyards and nature is certainly the first reason to fall in love with Pietragalla!

2. A Village Carved in Tuff: A Journey into the Past

Pietragalla's historical centre

Moving on, another reason is its complex labyrinth of alleyways and arches in the historic centre. The castle, which is guarding the ancient and enchanting village, now known as the Ducal Palace, is a symbol of political power. The grand Church of San Teodosio is a protector against natural disasters, a religious emblem.

an opening in a house what they used to observ inside the homes
An interesting fact: on the exterior sides of houses, there were narrow and long openings that functioned as predecessors to modern video cameras, allowing residents to observe passersby from inside their homes.

As a matter of fact, the streets and alleys develop concentrically around the main street, Via Roma. They envelope the central core in a tight defensive embrace. Thanks to the arrangement of buildings along three concentric circles, Pietragalla naturally becomes a fortified town.

Via Manosca and a wine cellar in the historical centre
Wine cellars in the centre

As you wander the streets of the town along Via Mancosa, named for its northern position and consequent shadow, you’ll discover numerous cellars or “rutte” (in Pietragalla’s local dialect).

These are authentic underground caves, accessed by internal stone staircases. They are dug into the tuff terrain at depths ranging from 4 to 5 meters. Due to being underground, these spaces are ideal for wine storage. They used large oak barrels, as they naturally maintain a constant temperature of 7°C.

This tuff-carved village is full of narrow and winding streets and houses that appear to emerge directly from the rock. They offer a unique experience that will take you back in time.

3. The City of Wine: An Extraordinary Food and Wine Experience

Pietragalla is known as the City of Wine, and it’s no wonder, considering its rich winemaking tradition. The ancient tuff-carved fermentation vats were the pulsating heart of this production. Thanks to them, passion and attention to detail came together to create high-quality wines.

Today, even though only one young winemaker uses a traditional palmento, the village maintains its connection to wine. In the autumn, during the wine festival, the tasting of local wines, enriched with the authentic flavors of Basilicata. It is an experience that we recommend especially for food and wine enthusiasts.

4. Journey into Rural Basilicata: The Museum of Peasant Civilization

Most of the agricultural tools farmers use for wine production are now held in the house museum. They dedicated this small but evocative exhibition to the peasant culture of Pietragalla. The local “proloco” created it, showcasing the furnishings of an ancient peasant house, clothing usual to that period, and everyday tools.

In summary, Pietragalla is a magical place, not only because of its winemaking history and fascinating structures carved into the tuff, but also because of the unique atmosphere. This small Lucanian village offers a journey through time and an unforgettable food and wine experience. Without doubt they will make you fall in love with its hidden treasures.

The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve was created in 1983 due to the will of the Lombardy Region. It is a flat area of about 1600 hectares between Valchiavenna and Valtellina. The Mezzola Lake is situated precisely within the reserve, north of Como Lake. It is separated from the Como Lake by the Mera River, which passes in the western part of the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve. This lake is located 200 metres above sea level and bathes the provinces of Como and Sondrio. In particular, it bathes the municipalities of Gera, Lario, Dubino, Sorico, Novate Mezzola, and Verceia.

The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve

The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve has an inestimable naturalistic value because it is the location where many species of migratory birds land during their migratory routes. In fact, the reserve is part of the European Ecological Network “Natura 2000”.

It is a set of places characterized by a variety of both flora and fauna, and which for this reason is of community interest and is protected to ensure that the abundant biodiversity is protected.

Why should you visit the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve?

Undoubtedly, there are many routes that you can do – especially in the perimeter area of the park – both alone and accompanied by a Guide of the Reserve. In this way, you can discover the morphology of the Reserve itself as well as learn about various historical and environmental aspects that characterize it. This destination is ideal for both expert walkers and for those who are less so, including families with children.

There are various routes both on mule tracks surrounded by greenery and in nature and on dirt roads.

How to reach the Reserve? You should leave the car in the area called “Ponte dell’Adda” and start from there the walk around Mezzola Lake.

Itineraries in the Pian di Spagna Reserve

There are several route options that are ideal for those who love walking in nature while admiring its beauties:

  1. A beautiful walking itinerary starts near the Adda Bridge, where you can admire the Fuentes Dort. You can also cover it by bicycle, in order to arrive at Cascina Lodoletta.
  2. Another ring itinerary has both arrival and departure from the locality of Beletrone. It develops entirely within the reserve and is very suggestive.
  3. A beautiful route lasting 3 hours, also suitable for less experienced travellers, starts from Dascio and reaches the Temple of San Fedelino in the locality of Sorico. Legends say that the church was built on the spot where the bones of the martyr Fedele were found in 964. You can also reach the temple by boat from the small port of Verceia.
  4. If you love birds, the right route for you is the one that goes from Ponte del Passo to Sasso di Dascio, which also has a unique view of the Mezzola Lake

But the real wonder is what we find on the shores of Mezzola Lake: a unique flora and fauna.

Flora and Fauna of the Mezzola Lake

As far as plants are concerned, you will find reeds, water lilies, and sedges, which have narrow and hard leaves and are grouped in tufts.

Talking about animals, you can find herons, swans, seagulls, cormorants, swallows, titmice, and much more.

“Pian di Spagna” is among the most important reserves not just on a national, but also on a European level. In fact, here you can find many species of ducks that winter here and live on the lake itself. The purpose of the area is to be a safe port for many birds during migration.

When should you go to the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve

If you are a birdwatching lover, the ideal period is November and May. Otherwise, any time is fine even if it is better if you avoid hot days as there are not many places to shelter from the scorching sun.

For more information visit the website of the Natural Reserve.

Located in Tuscany, at the foot of the Apennines, Pistoia holds around one hundred thousand inhabitants. Nevertheless, it represents a real gem for the peninsula. Even though the tourist activity is not comparable to the nearby cities of Florence and Pisa, thanks to the nomination of the “Italian Capital of Culture” in 2017, it attracts tourists from all over Europe. Going from the city centre, which houses wonderful works of art, to the parks around the city. There are so many things to see in Pistoia! Do you want to spend a cultural holiday away from mass tourism? Pistoia is the right green destination for you!

What to see in Pistoia and how to get there?

First of all, reaching Pistoia is very simple. Public transport and its proximity to Florence allow you to arrive there in about 45 minutes from the Tuscan capital. After that, moving around the city is very convenient. The main attractions are in fact all concentrated in the historic centre and can be reached with a simple walk. Some points of interest that you cannot miss are:

San Zeno Cathedral and Bell Tower

The cathedral and the tower bell of Pistoia

It is a magnificent Romanesque building located in the centre of the city, overlooking Piazza Duomo. Although inside you can find a small relic of San Jacopo (a fragment of the skull), the cathedral is dedicated to San Zeno. Furthermore, both inside and outside, the cathedral is embellished by statues of San Zeno and San Jacopo, and the Crucifix by Coppo di Marcovaldo. After a visit to the cathedral, you will be able to enjoy a magnificent view from the Bell Tower. It measures 67 meters and there are 200 steps to climb, but the panorama once you reach the top will fully repay you for the effort made.

Spedale del ceppo

Among the main attractions of Pistoia there is also a hospital! Founded in the thirteenth century, it is characterized by a remarkable frieze in glazed terracotta on the external façade. After having been in operation for about seven centuries, the health facility now houses the Museo dello Spedale. It traces the history of healthcare in Pistoia, with a collection of surgical instruments and historical documents on the lives of doctors.

Underground Pistoia

The attractions in Pistoia are not limited to the earth’s surface… but also under your feet! The Pistoia underground route extends for about 650 meters along the course of the ancient Brana stream. It will allow you to explore Pistoia’s history and can be accessed right from inside the Spedale del Ceppo

Natural parks not to be missed

Montuliveto Park, with some of the activities that you can try there. An example is yoga

In addition to the cultural attractions, Pistoia stands out for the number of parks and green areas within the urban area. After a day spent visiting the historic centre, we suggest you spend some time in these natural areas, in order to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that the Pistoia Green parks can offer you.

In particular, the Montuliveto Park is a very pleasant green oasis in the centre of Pistoia. Here, in addition to easing the pressure lying on the grass of the park, you can also participate in the numerous cultural events and other activities organized within the park. There is also a cafeteria-restaurant where you can take a break immersed in the urban green area.

Not to be forgotten is the marvellous Zoological Garden of Pistoia. Suitable for adults and children, it houses more than 400 animal species, placed in environments that resemble their natural habitat. The zoo will allow you to spend an unforgettable day, meeting Nature, including flora and fauna, and the king of the jungle and penguins.

Slow itineraries of Pistoia and the surrounding area

The city of Pistoia has a strong link with the culture of pilgrimage, as evidenced by both the historical documentation and the city’s monuments and works of art. The city centre, as already described, encourages movement on foot or by bicycle in the historic centre, also highlighted by the proximity of the various tourist attractions.

On the other hand, if you want to venture into a more particular and demanding experience immersed in nature, the “Cammino di San Bartolomeo” is a perfect alternative. The route goes from Pistoia to Fiumalbo and measures about 100 km. The itinerary allows to walk through the luxuriant woos where silence reigns and nature is sovereign. This route also allows, given its length and the fact that it crosses different areas of Central Italy, to savour the tasty dishes and both Pistoia and Modena traditions.

What can you eat in Pistoia?

To explore Pistoia does not mean only visiting the art and history through historic monuments. Gastronomy plays a fundamental role in traveller’s holiday, and is one of the main characteristics that he will remember with pleasure. In fact, Pistoia has a lot to offer, also from a green point of view.

Oil and wine, especially in the area of Montalbano, represent two specialties, meeting the expectations of those who visit this part of Tuscany. The Sorana bean, awarded with the Slow Food Presidium, is a fruit grown in the locality of Pescia. The legume has a very light color and a thin skin, perfect to prepare “fagioli al fiasco“.

A typical dish of the Pistoia tradition is “il carcerato”. It is a soup made with stale bread, veal entrails and a sprinkling of cheese. The particular name (literally “the prisoner”) derives from the fact that it was once a classic dish cooked for prisoners. Another dish of the poor cuisine, which cannot be missed if you visit Pistoia, is “farinata con le leghe” (that is strips of black cabbage, a vegetable that resists even frost and can therefore be used in winter).

Dulcis in fundo, Pistoia also has a great variety of desserts. For example, chestnut flour is used as a base for various dishes. Or sugared almonds, particularly for their thorny shape, called by Pistoians themselves “birignoccoluta”. The local tradition of sweets has not neglected chocolate lovers. We suggest you visit the workshops of some world-famous master chocolatiers, such as Roberto Catinari and the Slitti family,

Crystal-clear waters, wild coves, and breathtaking cliffs. Here we are on the Riviera delle Palme, an enchanting and renowned area of Liguria. Specifically, we find ourselves in Bergeggi, a picturesque destination perfect for lovers of the sea, pristine nature, and local traditions.

Suspended between mountains and the sea, this small town (with just over a thousand inhabitants) is ideal for taking a break from the hustle and bustle and experiencing moments of absoluterelaxation. Despite its small size, the village offers numerous points of interest and activities. However, its beaches are undoubtedly the main attraction for travelers. They offer a wide range of choices between pebbles and finesand, whether you love rugged coves or equipped bathing establishments.

For example, there is Punta Prodani, a little secret corner accessible by boat or via a path that starts from the charming Lido delle Sirene. While the beaches impress us with the color of the sea and their beauty, it is the island that makes us fall in love with Bergeggi. About 250 meters from the coast, a cone of limestone covered with Mediterranean scrub emerges from the sea, reaching an altitude of 53 meters at its highest point.

The island

The island, also known as Sant’Eugenio Island, has been a Marine Protected Area since 2007. It preserve incredible biodiversity and extraordinary seabeds, caves and small coves, as well as legends and ancient history. Despite its small size, it boasts numerous historical and archaeological sites. A large circular tower from the Roman era, topped by a square-based tower from the medieval period, and a Paleochristian church with an attached monastery, likely added in the 11th century AD, all adding significant historical and cultural value to this impressive place.

You can easily organize trips for kayaking, diving, and snorkeling to admire the fantastic marine world that inhabits these waters, exclusively in designated areas.

Finally you can’t miss the Grotta Marina di Bergeggi, a karstic cave dating back approximately 200 million years. You will find it between Torre del Mare and the town center.

The village of Bergeggi

The small town is located on the slopes of Mount Sant’Elena, in an elevated position compared to the sea. Narrow streets and pastelcolored houses with typical terrace roofs form small clusters scattered among olivegroves and vineyards, descending towards the sea through alleys. From the village and the surrounding hills, there are plenty of opportunities for walks and nature trekking.

The surroundings: Noli and Spotorno

In the vicinity of Bergeggi, there are certainly enchanting places to visit. We have chosen Spotorno and Noli.

Spotorno embodies the genuinecharm of Liguria. Behind a golden expanse of sand lies an ancientvillage waiting to be discovered. With its narrow and picturesque streets, colorful houses, and squares, it welcomes you with an authentic atmosphere.

Noli is also an enchanting seaside village. Its historic center, surrounded by medievalwalls, holds a treasure trove of riches that tell of its glorious history as the Fifth Maritime Republic and its present as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. We immerse ourselves in the narrow streets to explore the treasures of Noli. From the magnificent towers to the majestic castle overlooking the city, to the evocative cathedral and other precious palaces and monuments of great historical and artistic value.

Where to stay for a sustainable vacation in Bergeggi and the Ligurian Riviera

It is precisely on the hills between Noli and Spotorno that we have chosen our base. Cà de Badin is a small, typical, and charming familyrunB&B immersed in nature. With organicbreakfasts and traditional buildings, you can live a slow life guided by ecosustainability and respect for traditions.

And it is from here that we set out to discover the postcard-perfect beaches of Bergeggi, the narrow streets of Spotorno, the islet, and the incredible wonders of the Ligurian Riviera. Do you want to come with us?
