Why is everyone talking about veganism? In recent years, going vegetarian or vegan has gained significant popularity, and for a good reason. Let us tell you what are the benefits and advantages of leaving animal products out of our diet. It is beneficial not only for your health but also for the environment!

If you’ve never tried the vegan diet, read on to find out where you can do it on your next vacation.

Benefits of Vegan Diet

The health benefits

First and most important is our health. A plant-based diet is linked to significant health benefits. Emphasizing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes while limiting red and processed meat and dairy. For instance lower risk of chronic diseases, type 2 diabetes, improved weight management, and enhanced overall well-being. A well-balanced vegan diet can also improve heart health among many other benefits.

The benefits for the planet

If we look further from our own health, there is much more to note. Several studies, including the UN’s Panel on Climate Change, highlight the potential of plant-based diets in reducing carbon footprints and combating climate change. Shifting towards a vegan diet can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional ones.

Further on, according to this report, by 2050, meat and dairy farms will account for 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Of course only if production remains unregulated. Instead, if there were a global shift to a plant-based diet, it could reduce greenhouse gases caused by food production by 70%, respectively, by 2050.

If people would only cut out red meat from their diet, that would already help mitigate the problem. Indeed, beef contributes the most global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the study talking about meat production.

Reducing livestock herds not only curbs emissions but also addresses concerns related to methane, a major contributor to global warming. It is released during enteric fermentation in cattle and when managing animal manure.

For example, according to one climate change calculator, eating a typical fast-food hamburger (75 gr) daily for a year contributes greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving a car 11,580 km. It equals to crossing the United States about 2.5 times. Comparing that to eating about a third of a can of beans (150 gr) daily for a year, which is equivalent to driving a car 150 km.

Moreover plant-based diet also requires less water consumption and reduces habitat destruction and loss, which threatens wildlife and plant species. Making even a little change in our everyday lives can get us closer to a more sustainable future.

Where to try it?

A project started in 2005, that now is showing the first amazing results, and that makes Norway even more beautiful to see: it is the National Tourist Routes, a sustainable initiative that combines art, design, and nature.

The best architects and designers of Norway, including Snøhetta, Margrete Friis, Peter Zumthor, Jensen & Skodvin, and Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk, have created the world’s unique panoramic roads for a total of 1859 kilometers, divided into 18 routes.
In western, Central, and North Norway, along the coast and in the mountains, rest areas, and panoramic viewpoints were created that do not destroy nature, but rather enhance the experience of travelers who live in it.

There are many who choose to make a road trip to Norway; (I recommend, with an electric car!) and now the experience will be even more incredible. If panoramic roads exist in many other countries, these Norwegians remain unique in the world, because architecture and nature intertwine harmoniously, in a way perhaps never seen before.

There is, for example, the National Tourist Route Sognefjellet of 108 kilometers, 1,434 meters above sea level, that crosses the highest mountain pass in Norway, and that now allows you to see like never before its longest and deepest fjord.

You can travel the 230 kilometers of the National Tourist Route Lofoten and be amazed by the stunning landscapes of the Lofoten archipelago, or you remain breathless, across the Arctic Circle, passing the world’s largest tidal maelstrom, the unique Torghatten mountain, and the UNESCO listed Vega islands, along the incredible Helgelandskysten National Tourist Road.

The National Tourist Roads in Norway rethink the architecture and design, which now is at the service of nature and of the travelers who want to live it fully. In some cases, the architectural gestures can almost go unnoticed, but they do change the face of the country, which, while remaining sustainable, re-evaluate the concept of tourism. The architectural gestures call the attention of travelers and distracted tourists, and emphasize the cultural and historical heritage of the spaces, making the experience unforgettable travel.

Some of these national tourist routes are closed in winter, so we recommend checking the website nasjonaleturistveger.no before departing.

The first ecological ways born from the restoration of disused railway lines are located in the United States. It is precisely here that in the first half of the ’60s the first greenways, and in 1986 the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy came to life, an association that promotes the recovery of the immense disused railway heritage. The US is therefore the pioneers of the greenways, with their 1931 rail trail, for a total of 37,750 kilometers.

There is the John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which passes from the state of Washington and is the longest one with 480 km. Then there is the W&OD Railroad Trail in Virginia which is one of the busiest with an average of 3 million users per year.

We move to Europe where the first greenways were born in the late ’80s, in the United Kingdom. Here you can walk or cycle along the Bristol&Bath Railway Path, which was among the first work of recovery of a disused railway. Also Spain and France have over the years invested in greenways: the Via Verdes are 117, while the French Vélorail are 90.

Features and benefits of greenways

The greenways around the world have in common several aspects: being separated from the ordinary road network (they are almost always abandoned railways, but can also be towpaths of rivers or other paths) and dedicated exclusively for non-motorized users, they are safe and accessible; thanks to general moderate slope, it’s easy to enjoy the trails in a slowly way; besides recovering rail lines also the service facilities along the way will be recovered and so, for example, the train stations become dining options.
And the benefits? They are many, and we start with the promotion of a new form of tourism, an active, responsible and sustainable one. But greenways also contribute to the development of the less-known, far from mass tourism, region and they give citizens new spaces for outdoor activities with beneficial effects on their health.

The Greenways in Italy

If the greenways around US and Europe are now well established, what is the Italian situation? The railways that are no longer used in the Italian territory are so many, but still a few have been made accessible in sustainable way. There are some individuals engaged in the promotion of the greenways in Italy, such as the Italian Greenways Association Onlus, but there’s not a national vision that would make possibile the recovering of disused railways and the promotion of sustainable tourism in the country, with huge economic and environmental benefits. Among those greenways that have been created, we recommend you the former Treviso-Ostiglia railway, transformed into a beautiful cycle path. It is 118 km long and runs throughout Veneto region, to arrive at the edge of the Po river. But there is also the Spoleto-Norcia in Umbria, or the Ospedaletti-Imperia,  in Liguria.

Eco-conscious living is more than just a lifestyle. It’s a commitment to reducing environmental impact and making sustainable choices. However, maintaining this commitment can become challenging when you find yourself in a new environment after relocating. In this article, we’ll explore the concept of sustainable serendipity, where unexpected opportunities for eco-conscious living can arise in the wake of relocation. We’ll discuss the journey of adapting to a new place while keeping your environmental values intact.

The Pre-Relocation Eco-Conscious Lifestyle

Before discussing the challenges and triumphs of eco-conscious living post-relocation, it’s important to establish the eco-conscious lifestyle you were accustomed to before the move. Whether you were a dedicated urban gardener, a proponent of public transportation, or a waste-reduction enthusiast, recognizing the practices and habits that defined your previous eco-friendly life is crucial.

There are many ways you can save energy while organizing a move. Photo by CHUTTERSNAP via Unsplash

.
Perhaps you had a thriving compost pile in your backyard or regularly participated in local environmental cleanup initiatives. Maybe you were an active member of a sustainability-focused community, sharing ideas and inspiration with like-minded individuals. Your previous lifestyle served as a source of pride and fulfillment.

The Reality of Relocation

Relocating is often a life-altering decision, driven by many factors such as job opportunities, family considerations, or personal growth. Regardless of the reasons behind your move, the process can be emotionally and practically demanding. Leaving behind the familiar and embarking on a new adventure can disrupt established eco-conscious routines.

While packing the boxes and navigating the logistics of moving, it’s easy for eco-consciousness to take a back seat. This shift can be disheartening, as you may feel that the necessities of relocation are compromising your commitment to sustainable living.

Reevaluating Eco-Conscious Priorities

As you settle into your new environment, it’s crucial to reevaluate your eco-conscious priorities in light of the unique context of your relocation destination. Every place has its own environmental challenges, opportunities, and cultural dynamics. If you’re moving into a vacation home and want to rent your eco-friendly home seasonally, you should know more about your environment.

You can start by researching the local environmental scene. What are the predominant environmental issues in your new area? Are there organizations or initiatives focused on sustainability? Understanding the local context is the first step in adapting your eco-conscious lifestyle.

It’s also important to acknowledge the cultural and societal differences that may influence your approach. Some communities may have well-established eco-friendly practices, while others may be less inclined toward sustainability. Embrace the opportunity to learn from the new environment and adjust your priorities accordingly.

Adapting to the New Environment

Adapting to a new environment requires flexibility and an open mind. Here are some strategies to help you navigate eco-conscious living post-relocation:

  1. Research and Engage: Dive into local environmental organizations, community groups, and events. Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for sustainability.
  2. Networking: Establishing relationships with local activists and eco-conscious advocates can be invaluable. They can offer insights into the local environmental challenges and guide how to make a positive impact.
  3. Explore Eco-Friendly Options: Seek eco-conscious businesses, farmers’ markets, and sustainable products in your new area. Supporting local sustainable initiatives can be rewarding.

Overcoming Challenges and Setbacks

Adapting to a new environment while maintaining eco-consciousness is not without its challenges. Therefore, take a look at some common issues you may encounter and tips for overcoming them:

eco-friendly materials
You can reduce water and electricity usage, as well as reduce waste during and after the move.

  1. Lack of Familiar Resources: You may not have access to the same eco-friendly resources and services as in your previous location. In such cases, get creative and find alternative solutions to reduce your environmental footprint.
  2. Cultural Differences: Embrace cultural differences and be patient with the pace of change in your new community. Your dedication to this form of living can inspire others to make positive changes.
  3. Feeling Isolated: Feeling isolated or disconnected in a new place is common. Combat this by actively seeking out eco-conscious communities and engaging with like-minded individuals.

Navigating Sustainable Serendipity

In adapting to your new environment, you may stumble upon unexpected opportunities for eco-conscious living. This concept, sustainable serendipity, underscores the idea that unexpected moments can lead to significant positive changes in your eco-conscious journey.

For instance, you might discover a local conservation project that aligns with your values or meet a neighbor who shares your enthusiasm for sustainable gardening. These chance encounters can reaffirm your commitment to an eco-conscious lifestyle and make your relocation experience all the more meaningful.

Building a New Eco-Conscious Routine

Building a new eco-conscious routine in your new environment is a gradual process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you establish sustainable habits:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define your eco-conscious objectives in your new context. Whether it’s reducing water usage, using eco-friendly furniture and energy sources, or advocating for eco-friendly policies, clear goals will guide your efforts.
  2. Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the local environmental issues and opportunities. Moreover, you can attend workshops, read local publications, and engage with experts in the field.
  3. Take Small Steps: Start with manageable eco-conscious actions that align with your goals. These could include using reusable shopping bags, reducing energy consumption, or volunteering for local environmental projects.
  4. Measure Progress: Regularly assess your progress toward your eco-conscious goals. Keep a journal or use eco-tracking apps to monitor your environmental impact.

Embracing Sustainable Serendipity

Eco-conscious living is a journey that continues after relocation. It simply evolves. So, if you embrace the concept of sustainable serendipity and adapt to your new environment, you can continue your commitment to making environmentally conscious choices. In today’s world, the concept of sustainable travel has gained significant traction. Travellers are becoming increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment and are seeking ways to explore the globe while minimising their carbon footprint. Sustainable travel involves making responsible choices that positively affect the environment and local communities. This article aims to explore the significance of sustainable travel, its impact on air pollution, and provide practical tips for minimising your carbon footprint while exploring the globe.

Understanding Sustainable Travel

Sustainable travel, also known as ecotourism, involves making environmentally friendly choices that promote the conservation of natural resources, support local communities, and minimise negative impacts on the environment. It encompasses a wide range of practices, including reducing carbon emissions, conserving water and energy, supporting local businesses, and respecting the local culture and wildlife. Sustainable travel encourages travellers to be mindful of their ecological and social footprint and to make conscious decisions that contribute to the preservation of the destinations they visit.

Travellers can engage in sustainable travel by choosing eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local initiatives, and participating in responsible tourism activities. By adopting sustainable travel practices, travellers can help protect the planet’s natural and cultural diversity, while also enhancing their travel experiences. Sustainable travel is not only about minimising the negative impact of tourism but also about creating positive change and leaving a lasting, meaningful impression on the places visited.

Sustainable travel is a holistic approach that considers the environmental, social, and economic aspects of travel.

It promotes the idea of responsible exploration and encourages travellers to be mindful of their choices and their impact on the destinations they visit. By understanding the principles of sustainable travel, individuals can make informed decisions that contribute to the conservation of the environment and the well-being of local communities.

The Impact of Air Pollution on Travel

Air pollution is a significant concern in the travel industry, particularly due to the high emissions generated by various modes of transportation. The burning of fossil fuels in cars, planes, and ships releases harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming and air quality deterioration. The carbon footprint of travel is further amplified by the energy-intensive infrastructure and operations of hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions. Click here to find out more.

The consequences of air pollution on travel are far-reaching, affecting not only the environment but also human health and the well-being of local communities. Polluted air can lead to respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and other health issues, impacting both residents and tourists in popular travel destinations. Additionally, air pollution can harm ecosystems, degrade natural landscapes, and contribute to climate change, ultimately threatening the very attractions that draw travellers to these destinations.

Addressing the impact of air pollution on travel requires a concerted effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices across the travel industry. By acknowledging the connection between travel and air pollution, travellers can take proactive steps to minimise their environmental impact and contribute to the preservation of the destinations they visit.

The Importance of Sustainable Travel

The importance of sustainable travel cannot be overstated in today’s global context. As the tourism industry continues to expand, the need for sustainable practices becomes increasingly urgent. Sustainable travel not only benefits the environment but also contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, the empowerment of local communities, and the overall well-being of destinations.

By prioritising sustainable travel, travellers have the opportunity to support conservation efforts, reduce their ecological footprint, and contribute to the economic development of local communities. Sustainable travel also fosters a deeper connection between travellers and the places they visit, allowing for more meaningful and authentic experiences. Furthermore, the promotion of sustainable travel can lead to the adoption of eco-friendly practices by businesses and governments, ultimately shaping a more sustainable future for the travel industry.

By embracing sustainable travel practices, individuals can play a significant role in preserving the planet’s natural and cultural diversity and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and richness of the world’s destinations.

Tips for Minimising Your Carbon Footprint While Travelling

Travellers have the power to make a positive impact on the environment by adopting sustainable practices during their journeys. Here are some practical tips for minimising your carbon footprint while exploring the globe:

Sustainable Transportation Options

  • Prefer the train to the plane. If really necessary, opt for direct flights and non-stop routes to minimise fuel consumption and emissions.
Consider cycling to reduce reliance on motorised vehicles.

Eco-Friendly Accommodation Choices

  • Select accommodations that have implemented sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting and water conservation measures.
  • Support eco-lodges, hotels, and resorts that are committed to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
  • Conserve energy and water during your stay by reusing towels, turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and minimising air conditioning usage.

By understanding the impact of air pollution on travel and embracing the importance of sustainable practices, travellers can make a positive difference in the world. Through eco-friendly transportation options, such as trains and buses, and the selection of accommodations that prioritise sustainability, travellers can minimise their carbon footprint while exploring the globe. By taking proactive steps to support sustainable travel, individuals can contribute to the conservation of the environment, the well-being of local communities, and the long-term sustainability of travel destinations.

New York has always been a symbol of progress and innovation. However, in recent years, the Big Apple has taken on a new challenge: to become a point of reference for environmental sustainability. In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, New York is standing out as a city that boldly and creatively embraces eco-sustainability.

During my recent journey in the city that never sleeps, I had the opportunity to observe firsthand some of the initiatives through which New York is presenting itself as an increasingly sustainable city.

Fasten your seatbelts and get ready to travel with me to New York like you’ve never seen it before!

New York’s Green New Deal

One of the most ambitious initiatives is the city’s “Green New Deal“, a plan aimed at making New York completely sustainable by 2050. This includes a series of measures such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy, and promoting sustainable mobility.

Specifically, the city has set the ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.

Sustainable Transport

Traffic congestion and air pollution have long been critical issues in New York. However, the city has adopted innovative policies to address these challenges.

The introduction of bike lanes, the expansion of public transportation, and the encouragement of electric vehicles are just a few initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the transportation sector.

In this regard, New York houses an aerial tramway connecting Manhattan to Roosevelt Island: the opportunity to admire the skyline from within it certainly ranks in the top ten of my experiences in the city.

Green Architecture

Sustainable architecture is emerging as a key element in the transformation of New York. New buildings are designed with a particular focus on energy efficiency, the use of recyclable materials, and innovative solutions to reduce the ecological footprint. Skyscrapers adorned with rooftop gardens and green walls testify to the city’s commitment to a greener future.

To provide a concrete example, the Empire State Building is gearing up to become the new green icon of New York. As a matter of fact, the famous skyscraper will be powered exclusively by wind energy.

Urban Parks and Green Areas

New York is famous for its parks, such as Central Park, Bryant Park, Washington Square Park, and the High Line. However, the city is investing even more in creating green spaces accessible to all citizens. These not only contribute to the well-being of the community but also act as green lungs, absorbing carbon and promoting biodiversity.

In particular, during my trip, I had the opportunity to visit Little Island, a real floating garden on the Hudson River: can you believe that over 66,000 bulbs and 114 trees have been planted so far?

You can find more information about this fascinating green project at this link.

Community Engagement

Sustainability in New York is not just a matter of government policies but actively involves the community. Local initiatives, such as neighborhood composting and urban farming, are gaining popularity. Citizens themselves are embracing more sustainable lifestyles, reducing waste, and adopting greener practices.

In conclusion, it’s clear that New York is wholeheartedly embracing a green future. Through innovative policies, architectural projects, and community engagement, the city is transforming into a model of urban sustainability.

What are you waiting for? Hurry up and pack your bags for a green journey in the most fascinating metropolis on the planet!

What are the green behaviors to follow at the beach and on the shore? Here are 12 rules to be environmentally conscious even while on vacation!

What green behaviors should you adopt at the beach to be environmentally conscious even while on vacation? According to Legambiente’s Beach Litter 2023 initiative, which monitored the amount of litter on 38 Italian beaches, over 37,000 pieces of trash were counted in May alone.

Over 70% of the waste collected on these beaches is composed of plastic and other synthetic polymers, materials that can take anywhere from a hundred to a thousand years to decompose in nature! Topping the list of the most frequent types of waste found on Italian beaches are plastic fragments (about 10% of the total waste); followed by caps and lids (over 8% of the total); cigarette butts (about 6% of the total); and plastic cotton swabs (4% of the total).

The “Beach Litter” initiative also includes an educational activity on how to keep the beaches clean and the importance of marine and coastal biodiversity. The aim is to monitor the waste left on our coastlines in the hope that talking about it can bring change.

So what can we do “in our small way”? Here are twelve tips to be environmentally conscious at the beach and on the shore.

Green Behaviors at the Beach and on the Shore: 12 Tips

1. Recycle

Respect recycling guidelines even on the beach. If you do it at home, why not do it on vacation? Remember to bring bags to collect and separate waste. If the beach lacks waste bins, the rule is to carry your waste with you. An interesting idea might be to organize “clean walking” outings with friends and family. While walking along the shoreline, use appropriate grabbers (and consider wearing gloves) to collect trash you find along the way. Biodegradable gloves and bags are available for maximum environmental respect.

2. Natural Beach Towels

Use beach towels made of cotton or natural bamboo fibers. Avoid plastic mats or synthetic materials. Indeed, several brands now offer special “environmentally friendly” lines.

3. Swimwear

Choose swimwear made from recycled materials or handmade options. When washing them, do it by hand using eco-friendly, gentle detergents.

4. Organic Sunscreen

Purchase sunscreens without oxybenzone and with mineral-based filters. Evidently, recent studies have shown that oxybenzone is a hazardous substance that contributes to coral reef destruction.

5. Biodegradable Shampoo and Shower Gel

Use biodegradable products not only at the beach but also for everyday use to reduce marine pollution.

6. Beach Bags

Opt for cotton mesh or canvas beach bags. Make sure to test their durability before leaving, especially if you’re like me and tend to carry a lot.

7. Pack Your Lunch

If you enjoy having lunch by the sea, use reusable and plastic-free cutlery and dishes. For example for lunch containers and water bottles, you can easily find bamboo or aluminum options in stores.

8. Sustainable Toys

If you want your children to do something different from building sandcastles, you can buy eco-friendly toys made of wood or recycled materials.

9. Don’t Collect Shells, Starfish, Flowers, or Sand, and Avoid Disturbing Marine Life

Perhaps you’re not aware, but the beach and the sea are ecosystems that must be preserved and protected. Taking home “souvenirs” not only disrupts these ecosystems (imagine if everyone did it), but it’s also illegal according to Article 1162 of the Navigation Code, not to mention what the Cassation Court has ruled in this regard.

10. No Bonfires

A bonfire may be beautiful and romantic, but it’s also very dangerous. If you can’t control the flames, they could take over and irreparably damage marine biodiversity, not to mention the serious harm they could cause to people.

11. No Smoking on the Beach

Avoid lighting up on the beach to reduce air pollution, discourage smoking, including passive smoking, improve the well-being of everyone, and reduce waste (those famous 6% of beach waste, i.e., cigarette butts).

12. Walk or bike to the beach

Finally, an important piece of advice. You’re on vacation, so arrive at the beach in a relaxed manner. Why the rush? So, walk or bike to the beach, and the environment will thank you, as sustainable mobility is essential.
