Why is remote work beneficial for the green movement?

After the start of the world pandemic in 2020, our world has changed drastically and absolutely for good. We all are even more conscious now about our health than before. We clean our hands better and more often than ever, and, of course, we avoid human contact everywhere we can.

But this problem is not the only one we are facing in the 21st century: the aftermath of global warming is here, and we have little to no time to change our ways and save the planet for future generations. The green movement is more vital than ever now, and, surprisingly, the global pandemic helped it a lot by changing our views on working remotely.

Today we will talk about why your new remote working life can be beneficial for Earth and how it will help us save the planet from global warming. Let’s get to it.

Fewer cars on the streets

Choosing eco-friendly options for transportation is one of the best ways to help reduce gas emissions that torture our planet. Of course, purchasing a bike over a car or an electric vehicle over a traditional one is a big step in the right direction.

However, remote work introduces an even better solution: you don’t have to travel to your workplace at all! When you work at home, you can use your car only a couple of times a week at non-busy hours, where there’s no traffic and excessive gas usage.

And it benefits not only nature, but you too: you get more time for yourself, previously used to get to work, you save some money on gas, and you reduce your stress levels because you don’t get into traffic every day on your way to work.

Improving the air quality

This part is a by-product of the first one because it is obvious that little cars on the roads equal low air pollution. Well, at least lower, for sure.

Of course, remote working can contribute to other areas and influence the start of more sustainable development of your city or a country overall. When most of your citizens work at home, you get less office waste, reduced gas emissions, and more healthy people.

Now we need not a new highway in your city, but new parks near our homes, new stores, and schools. Urban development will now focus on giving people what they need at home, not work, because they spend most of their time there.

Less paper used, more work goes online

This is one of the biggest parts of green marketing that we should introduce into our office lives. Reducing paper waste is a big deal, especially in our day and age when using paper for everything is just unnecessary.

We already can get an education through remote learning, and most of the paperwork that previously could be only hand-signed can now be signed with your digital signature.

As for the workers themselves, we can now use a plethora of tools created for online working without using paper at all. We now have the luxury to use Zoom for online meetings, Xero for bookkeeping purposes, screen capturers to record brainstorms, etc. Designers do not need paper presentations like in the 1950s to present their ideas: they have photo editing software and an online video editor for their tasks.

Overall we can reduce using paper in day-to-day office life to a minimum using software that was created to replace paper things. And with every choice you make in favor of digital tools, you give one happy tree another day of life.

Power consumption is on the low end

A great way to lessen your carbon footprint is to lower your power consumption. Big companies with dozens of employees use a tremendous amount of energy to keep the working process running. The lights are always on in hallways and offices, thousands of PCs are never off, and air conditioners should be really powerful (and energy-consuming) to make the climate in the huge office space pleasant.

But when you work at home, you use much less energy to run your PC, your task manager, video editing software, CRM program, or accounting software. You will need only one lamp (if you even need it), you will open your window for fresh air, and will shut down your computer once you’re done. And you consume a minimal amount of energy daily compared to the amount you would have consumed at work.

More opportunities for conscious consuming

When you spend most of your day at home, you can finally embrace conscious consumption to the fullest. You can buy food and products in stocks and bulks, reducing the number of journeys to the supermarket to one or two per week, instead of every day.

Another benefit of buying more is that you can choose local food that uses far less plastic in packaging and less energy to get to you. And finally, if you cook at home, you help reduce waste from a take-out and improve your health with delicious and healthy homemade food. It decreases the chances of you getting sick and going to the hospital to get treatment, thus less waste.

Final thoughts

Will remote work be a new reality for all workers? Probably not for all, but some of the office jobs can and should be transferred to homes to help our poor planet recover from the damage we have done to it.
First, tech companies inspired the green movement by sending most of the workers to do their jobs at home, and now even the most conservative ones do it. It is a great trend, and we sincerely hope that these small steps will help us preserve Earth for future generations in its best shape.

There are stories that are good for the heart, that make you smile. Stories that are good for the world. Like the one of Bob and Ian, who after living in Manchester, Silicon Valley and London decided to change their lives and move to Marche region, embarking on a great adventure in sustainable tourism.

beautiful sustainable accommodation in Marche

Casal dei Fichi was born 15 years ago and is the realization of a dream, but also the result of a great job and an immense love for nature. Bob and Ian have managed to create a truly magical place, where sustainability and luxury blend perfectly and where it is easy to feel among friends. Here is what they told us about their sustainable accommodation in the Marche.

What is the story of your beautiful sustainable accommodation in Marche region?

beautiful sustainable accommodation in Marche region

We fell in love with this little-known region, its magnificent beaches, the dramatic mountains and the tranquility of the countryside. We have decided to share this corner of the world. So we set up Casal dei Fichi 15 years ago converting a derelict farmhouse into 6 high specification apartments. The property is located in greenery, in a rural location. It is close to the town centre so that guests have easy access to all the shops, restaurants and facilities they need, but well off the beaten tourist track. We started by sinking a well to provide the water needed for the restoration project, which now supplements a rainwater storage tank for watering the garden and growing vegetables. That helped us to plant over 100 trees. The renovation took over 2 years, during which we collaborated with local craftsmen.

The commitment to environmental sustainability of Casal dei Fichi

Casal dei Fichi

Our ambition is to make sustainable vacation a pleasure,” says Bob. This is why Casal dei Fichi was built and managed with the environment in mind, without forgetting the pleasure of welcoming and coziness. There are so many environmental initiatives that it is difficult to list them all: solar panels heat the water and the swimming pool, electricity comes from renewable sources, guests receive reusable bottles that finance sanitation projects in developing countries, a system of ozone cleans and disinfects the swimming pool with minimal use of chlorine, guests can collect fruit and vegetables from the vegetable garden, there are charging stations for electric vehicles. By simply enjoying a meal in one of the fantastic local restaurants, guests can help with Treedom initiative, which funds sustainable tree planting in Kenya by providing local jobs and helping to combat climate change. And much more.

Your holiday in the beautiful sustainable accommodation in Marche

Marche, Italy

Staying in one of the Casal dei Fichi apartments also means choosing the best starting point to discover the region. Marche offers boundless and suggestive landscapes, Renaissance cities and villages where you can live all the authentic Italian experience. Among the unmissable places there is certainly the Conero Park and wine tasting is one of the activities that you must try. During your holiday in Casal dei Fichi you will not only become friends with Bob and Ian, but also with the lady from the grocery store and the man who sold the oil. Bob also told us about the experience that guests particularly appreciate.

“Every week we host a pizza party we buy the flour from our local mill and make the dough ourselves, we supply the ingredients and light our traditional wood fired oven. The guests make their pizzas and we encourage everyone to share them around and enjoy them with a few glasses of wine from our local vineyard. We must have held over 250 parties and each one is always great fun. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to get to know our guests a little bit better and for them to get to know each other. Apart from the safety precautions of the oven we explain to the children that the only rules are to have fun and get messy, many of the adults manage to cover themselves in flour as well.”

What is the most important prize you got?

beautiful sustainable accommodation in Marche

Every award is a huge honor but the biggest reward we get is the satisfaction of our guests. With over 500 5 star trip advisor reviews we are by far the highest rated establishment in Marche. Many of our guests return every year and in 2019 60% of our guests had stayed with us previously. Many of them have become great friends and it is always wonderful to hear that a guest has changed their life in some small way to become more environmentally friendly as a result of something they enjoyed at Casal dei Fichi.

We are really pleased that the importance of environmentally importance is being increasingly recognized, that is firmly on the agenda of mainstream criteria when choosing a holiday destination. Our most recent award was from the Shortyz which was particularly gratifying as we were shortlisted by industry experts and then won in a public vote which demonstrated that both the industry and guests are recognizing our environmental ethos and initiatives.

What does it mean for you to be part of the Ecobnb community?

casal dei fichi giardino piscinaIt is fantastic to be a part of Ecobnb, we hope that our environmental initiatives encourage guests to stay with us but it is even more important to us that more and more businesses are recognizing that a sustainable holiday is now a must for more and more travelers. It is just as important to them as great facilities and stunning views. Ecobnb encourages everyone to constantly examine how they can continue to make their business more sustainable and simultaneously improve guest comfort and enjoyment. It’s a win win for everybody and especially the planet.

Bob and Ian not only offer apartments equipped with every comfort in the midst of surprising nature. Above all they offer the possibility of living a genuine experience that will leave an indelible mark in your life.

Entering the Oasi Galbusera Bianca is like being back at home, according to their guests. This is a dream house with a lot of unspoilt nature (which is a thing you don’t expect from places near Milan). You can fin this magnificent place close to the cities of Bergamo, Lecco and Como with its beautiful lake.

From an ancient rural village to an oasis for biodiversity

Panoramic view of the Oasi Galbusera Bianca

Oasi Galbusera Bianca was an ancient village of farmers. It became an uncultivated place after its abandonment. Thank to Gaetano Besana, a professional photographer who defines himself as a “beauty seeker“, this place has reborn. As a matter of fact, he restored these spaces, following the bio-architecture ideas.

He wanted to create a place where people would have been directly in contact with nature, and would have become more responsible travelers, aware of the rules, the balance and the needs of our Planet. Nowadays these themes are getting popular, but when the Oasis was born, people weren’t interested in such issues. Hence, Oasi Galbusera Bianca was the first Oasis for Biodiversity recognised by the WWF.

Unique experience

One of the most relevant features of this beautiful place, are its rooms. They’re like many different worlds where you can spend the night. Each room is different from the other: as a matter of fact, they offer suitable experiences for every kind of emotion and person.

For instance, there is the Hay Room, where mattress rests on the cut and dried grass. In addition, it has the typical golden color of the fields at sunset. Or you can choose the Hammock Suite, where there is a large double hammock hanging from the ceiling. Also, there is the Peony Room, where you are surrounded by the pink color of flowers. Consequently, this room is really romantic. Last but not least, there is the Carpenter’s Room, suitable for families.

There are so many other settings to discover!

Smartworking in the Nature

There are a lot of companies which choose us to co-work or let their personnel work in our beautiful nature. As a matter of fact, being in a calm and stimulating environment, help workers to reach their goals and focus on their work.

We also organize team building activities and personal evolution courses, because we really care about human growth. As a matter of fact, you can take part in training courses, group activities, meditation and yoga. What’s more? The Alpe Cimbra is the new Italian Alpine Pearl in Trentino. Let’s start by discovering Lavarone, Folgaria, Lusèrn, and their commitment to sustainability.

It’s official: Alpe Cimbra is the new Italian Alpine Pearl. As a matter of fact, Folgaria, Lavarone and Lusèrn (Luserna), the three municipalities of the Alpe Cimbra have decided to embrace the values of sustainable tourism promoted by the Alpine Pearls.

You will find miles of trails to walk through, among forests and breathtaking peaks and bike routes. So, small and painted villages nestled in the mountains, ancient forts from the First World War and several museums are waiting for you.

What are exactly the Alpine Pearls?

Since 2006 the Alpine Pearls aim is to promote conscious and respectful tourism in the Alps. The Alpine Pearls localities are just like a ‘necklace of pearls‘. As a matter of fact, they include 21 mountain localities distributed in 5 Alpine countries:
  • Switzerland: Les Diablerets, Disentis/Mustér
  • Slovenia: Bled, Bohinj”
  • Germany: Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgaden
  • Italy: Alpe Cimbra, Ceresole Reale, Chamois-La Magdeleine, Cogne, Forni di Sopra, Funes, Limone Piemonte , Moena, Moso in Passiria, Racines
  • Austria: Hinterstoder, Mallnitz, Neukirchen am Großvenediger, Werfenweng, Weissensee

Peter Brandauer, President of this association and mayor of Werfenweng, in  Austria, was very happy to introduce the Alpe Cimbra among the Alpine Pearls, since it is the first destination with the status of Aspiring Pearl:

The introduction of this beautiful place in Trentino, is the startint point to boost other destinations to become interested on promoting a more sustainable type of tourism. As a matter of fact, with effort and commitment, every destination can meet the strict criteria of the Alpine Pearls about slow mobility.

The Alpe Cimbra aims to a more sustainable tourism

Karl Birti, Councillor of the City of Lavarone, for 5 years has been committed to promoting a sustainable and innovative mobility project. Following his idea, the mayor of Lavarone pursued the nomination, also involving the Community of the Cimbrian Highlands and the Mayors of Folgaria and Lusérn.

Promoting a different kind of tourism, respectful of the environment, was already the focus of Lavarone. It is no wonder, in fact, if for a couple of years this beautiful lake has received the Blue Flag of Europe award. In addition, there are several measures taken by the Library of Lavarone to raise awareness about sustainable tourism.

The Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board has also welcomed this measure with such enthusiasm. The most relevant features of this place are its tradition, its culture and history, always aimed at developing the alpine environment – underlined the Director of the Apt, Daniela Vecchiato. Several events organized by the APT, such as the “Fiaba Regna” and the “Festival del Gioco” have been addressed to the local community to raise awareness on environmental issues.

Following the path of the Alpine Pearls, Alpe Cimbra is thus committed to promoting slow mobility. Also, its aim is to protect nature, in order to make people more interested in doing an eco-friendly vacation. Nowadays, things are changing and more and more people try to travel in a sustainable way; consequently, this is what inspires the Alpine Pearls: giving people what they really want. As a matter of fact, we are talking about wonderful locations, surrounded by unspoilt nature.

The idea of Folgaria and Luserna

The municipality of Folgaria is committed to protect its territory, and their main aim is to promote a more balanced tourism –  this is the opinion of Micheal Rech, mayor of Folgaria. Their next tourist season will be more eco-friendly and will give priority to sustainability.
Also, Luserna is on the same wavelenght as Folgaria. By being part of the Alpine Pearls, they want to make the local community aware of the environmental issues. In addition, they want people to realise how important sustainable travels are. As a matter of fact, one of their measure is to close part of the town to motorized vehicles.

Do you need some relax surrounded by nature? Poggio delle Querce is an old farm turned in a eco-friendly accommodation. In this beautiful and wide green space, you’ll have a panoramic view on the hills and on the Adriatic sea.

In Poggio delle Querce you will find a large garden with holm-oaks, olives, aromatic herbs and more. Here you can relax and spend your time reading, or simply enjoying the landscape. Among fruit trees, ancient oaks and olive trees, you’ll find your inner peace. This is a holiday away from the daily stress. The silence and the green of the Nature Park of Marche is waiting for you!

Natural landscape

We interviewed Susanna Wirth, the owner of this holiday home. Here’s what she told us:

1. How did the idea of Poggio delle Querce come out?

We were looking for a place where we could meet up with family and friends. Among different ideas, we chose “Poggio delle Querce”.

The main reasons of our choice were:

  • Calm and silence
  • No traffic sounds
  • Big old trees and unspoilt nature
  • Remote location, so you can enjoy some time away from noises and stress

The magic of this beautiful location was what brought us here. In addition, what we found here was something new: there were big old holm oaks we had never seen before. This large abandoned property was perfect to create a new corner of sustainabilty. This is how our idea was born.

The view of the hills and the wide panorama never stop to fascinate us. What’s more, the old house was no longer livable, but we believed that we could give it a new eco-friendly life.

Casa delle Marche

2. Which are the eco-friendly choices you made?

Since this old house was really ancient, we cared a lot about its restoration and we did it in a very meticulous way. A little bit later, the area was declared a natural park. So, our guests know this is a unique place.

The roof is new, but we have reused the ancient tiles, as well as the old beams (robinia and oak). Unfortunately we had to replace part of the roof structure, but we adopted the previous style, with the help of an experienced craftsmen.

The thick stone masonry has been repaired. In addition, the old terracotta floors and the old doors have also been restored.

What’s more, this work has been carried out involving local artisans with great experience. Recovery and restoration was much more expensive than deciding to build something new, but it was really worth it.

We  recycle everything and moreover, the kitchen and the garden waste are transformed into compost.

We have adopted the most modern standards for heating, electricity and bathrooms.

3. Which Eco-friendly routes should your guests follow?

We recommend our guests to spend some quality time in our spaceful garden, in order to find real peace. Let your soul travel with you.

Some people use a hammock and just relax: they they become part of the nature while they look at the birds. The cuckoo opens the most beautiful season. Also, some deckchairs are available on our terrace.

Of course we recommend the slow itineraries in the Natural Park of the Marche, between the hills, the woods and the ancient villages. Don’t miss the historic-artistic itinerary to the beautiful castle of Arcervia.

CASTLE

Ancient castle of Arcevia

4. Which are the most interesting experiences here?

The silence of this place and its wide view over the sloping hills. This is the right place to have your green holiday! In addition, we also boast a very well equipped kitchen.

What’s more, we always help our guests in finding some local places where they can try the typical food and have a tasty snack or a wine-tasting.

Terrace

5. Do you think that the number of people who prefer a calm and green holiday far away from the daily stress and pollution is increasing?

According to our experience, the number is growing. As a matter of fact, nowadays many people want a green environment with sustainable agriculture and nature. Also, if you have any kind of allergie, you’re welcomed in our special room for allergic people.

There are some families who ask us if we have a swimming pool for their children. First thing first, we’re not allowed to build it in a natural park. Also, we think it would be a waste of water, which is a really precious resource.

As a matter of fact, we collect rainwater and reuse it when we need it. A relevant point is that here you can find beautiful bathing places, rocky bays, rivers, lakes and if you just want a swimming pool, there are the public ones near.

In this beautiful accommodation, you can spend a 100% eco-sustainable holiday.

Breakfast

6. What does it mean to be part of the EcoBnb community?

We hope to find a community of people who care about our planet. We want to share our sustainable lifestyle with people who are on our same wavelenght.
