Today we reach the beautiful Turkey, which is a natural bridge between East and West and has a long history, from the Hittites to the Ottomans. We go up to the south-west of the country, where incredible and pristine beaches, lively towns and impressive monuments await us.

Ready? We leave together for an unforgettable travel in Turkey, between seaside resorts where in summer tourists flock, rural locations where you can enjoy nature and authenticity, and amazing food everywhere you turn. Our destination is Kaya Valley and the nearby coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera.

To get there, the easiest way is certainly to arrive at Dalaman airport, not far from the villages of the area and the sea. Things to do, live and experience are many and it is not easy to tell about them: walking among the scents and colors of the bazaars, being amazed by the view of the islands of Fethiye, seeing the ghost town of Kayaköy, walking in nature that hides ancient tombs, dive into the blue sea. This area of Turkey is sure to get exciting, but let’s go with order and discover some of the things not to be missed.

The villages, the authentic Turkey

Here you can feel the essence of local life of these areas; they are small villages surrounded by mountains and greenery where life proceeds at a slow pace, in a relaxed atmosphere. But in Kaya, Hisaronu, and in the other towns there is still a large number of restaurants and bars, where you can taste local delicacies and watch the world goes by.

The beaches, pristine blue

Again, the choices are many, and it depends on personal taste: those who prefer more secluded beaches will find heaven in Gemiler, a set of marvelous bays and coves where there are also interesting archaeological finds; those who enjoy more the beach life, will choose the Fethiye Bay from which you also admire twelve beautiful islands. But how not to mention the Patara beach, south of Fethiye, with its 18 kilometers of beach and the chance to see loggerhead turtles, and of course the most photographed beach in Turkey, the one of Oludeniz, the Blue Lagoon.

Oludeniz, Turkey Patara beach, one of the most beautiful of Turkey

Fethiye, tourism, and archaeological sites

With its 147,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the area. It is located in the ancient Telmessos and is one of the most popular tourist centers in Turkey. My advice is to spend a day or two to visit the city, but never in August when tourists rush here. Although far from the authenticity of the inland villages, the city offers precious glimpses. Among the many restaurants and clubs, there is a lively and wonderful weekly market that retains its turkish character. Besides the aforementioned beaches and islands, Fethiye offers historical evidence that worth visiting, from the Telmessos rock tombs, the theater and the remains of the fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes.

The Lycian Way

One of the best ways to discover the area is walking along this trek, one of the most popular in the world. It is 540 km route, very challenging in some points, that goes from the sea to the mountain, representing a portal to the past. In the journey from Oludeniz to Antalya there are many ancient buildings, rock Tombs, and archaeological ruins dating back to the period of the Lycian people.

Where to stay in this unspoiled corner of Turkey

In the village of Kaya, not far from Fethiye and the Blue Lagoon, you can stay in a beautiful eco-sustainable accommodation. The Fig Garden offers travelers 2 beautiful and rustic cottages surrounded by a garden of fruit trees. You will be welcomed with a basket of local products and this is the perfect place for spending some relaxing days, without any stress. The cottages, which are equipped with solar panels and low-energy light bulbs, can be rented together or separately. Both have beautiful private terraces with a barbecue and they share a pool.

Let me tell you what it means for us of Ecobnb sustainable holiday, and how we dream of the future of tourism.

Spending a sustainable holiday isn’t as difficult as some people think.

Here I am: I’m ready, it’s time to leave. The bags are closed, inside there are only the essentials, to be lighter and to bring back some memories, but only local and handmade products. Train tickets are on my smartphone, to avoid wasting paper unnecessarily. Just missing some water for the trip: the plastic is banned, much better a convenient bottle that does not produce waste that kills our seas.

A sustainable holiday begins in you suitcase

We get on the train, transportation means that nonetheless has not lost its charm. We leave towards our destination, watching the changing scenery from the window, reading that book that I can never finish, on my e-reader, because trees are precious.

We arrived at the station, now we must go to the B&B. We are not close but we have thought of everything: through a car-sharing service will share the ride with other travelers, to save money and reduce our ecological footprint.

The best means of transportation for your sustainable holiday is the train

The hospitality of the accommodation staff we have chosen is different from that of the great hotel, less cold and more personal. And so our journey of discovery begins, we encounter with the other and so we begin to know our destination through its inhabitants eager to share with us the places and stories.

Here every detail is designed to not weigh on the environment and resources are used responsibly. The building has been restored following the principles of green architecture, the water is heated by solar panels and energy comes from wind. The waste is transformed into compost or is separated, many objects are recovered and they found a second life, and so, in our room, an old door has become an original desk. In the garden native plants grow, there is a beautiful and fragrant organic vegetable garden and everything is watered with reclaimed rainwater.

For your sustainable holiday choose a eco-friendly accommodation

The next day begins with a beautiful organic breakfast, I rediscover the flavors of the land, of the genuine products, the homemade ones with only local produce, I savor the typical local desserts that allow us to continue our journey of discovery.

During your sustainable holiday eat only organic or local food

Now it’s time to start exploring: the B&B give us some bicycles for the duration of our sustainable holiday and we cannot think of a better way to move: a responsible means, that doesn’t pollute the environment and this nature that we have so long dreamed of seeing; and it is so nice to ride and let the wind ruffle our hair!

The bike is perfect for your sustainable holiday

Thus began the slow journey that will lead us to the discovery of pristine nature, of secret places, of the local life, away from the tourist track, to discover the most authentic corners.

At the end of our sustainable holiday we back home richer, somehow different, with new precious memories, and with the knowledge that we have traveled on tiptoe, without harming our planet.

A sustainable holiday is possible and must necessarily be our future, for a greener and more just world.

And if you want to travel in an eco-friendly way, book with us a green accommodation and follow our travel advice!

Have you ever heard about the chain of the Maddalene, solitary mountains of Trentino, in the Non-Valley (Italian Alps)? It is a place to discover,  following forest roads and paths on foot: a real paradise for hikers!

The landscapes that you can enjoy from the peaks of the Maddalene are truly amazing: close to the border with the Val d’Ultimo and South Tyrol, with its high snowy peaks that stand out on the horizon, but not far from the Brenta Dolomites group, in the south, as well as from the Catinaccio group, with the unmistakable profile of the Scillar visible eastwards.

There are so many ponds that offer hospitality to walkers with their typical dishes, made with simple but genuine products, including very good mountain cheeses. The cows enjoy the freshness of the surrounding clearings. The Maddalenes are truly a place to discover: follow me on this recommended itinerary that heads to the summit of Monte Luco!

Starting Point: Palade Pass

Duration: 2-3 hours

Difference in altitude: 916m

Difficulty: medium, alpine trail – forest road

Leave the car at Palade Pass (it is already in South Tyrol. For those coming from Trento, drive towards the entire Val di Non in the direction of Fondo) and take path 133 towards Lake Monte Luco, ignoring the indication for the mountain hut. The path begins steeply in the woods and emerge above, where the clearings begin. From here you can see the summit of Monte Luco (2434m).

Keep following the same path until you reach the fascinating Monte Luco Lake, populated in the summer by girini and frogs. From here, before climbing the highest peak, you can climb the summit of Piccolo Luco (2297m), going up and down from the same trail.

The path to Mount Luco grows between shrubs and rocks to reach a slope, from where you can take the last ramp leading to the peak cross. Take a moment to rest and admire the landscape! From here, follow the crest on the opposite slope that goes back to the lake (path No. 8A). To close the ring-tour with a tasty break in the mountain hut, follow path n.10 towards Laugenalm (Malga M. Luco). From here the forest road (n.10) will take you back to the starting point.

Where to stay

20170803_132923

The Maddalene chain is easily accessible from Trento or the Val di Non, as well as from the Val d’Ultimo in South Tyrol, in particular from the village of San Pancrazio, which is not far from the Palade Pass. Val di Non is really a beautiful valley to visit, with its villages and castles: it is worth staying here for a few days!

Happiness is being with nature, see her, talk to her. (Lev Tolstoy)

There are some places in which you just need to stay for a few hours to feel happy and at peace with the world. Pian delle Ginestre, in Sassetta, Tuscany, is one of these.

nature

Immerse yourself in the silence of centuries-old woods. As a matter of fasct, here you can stay in an eco-friendly glamping, which offers the freedom to feel close to nature and at the same time the comfort of a five-star experience.

There are so many things you can do here: explore ancient villages on the hills, walk through the woods or ride your e-bike to reach the sea. In addition, you can try the beneficial waters of Sassetta and taste local wines.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea
Let’s find out every detail behind the story of this ecobnb.

Starting from scratch, in the nature of Tuscany. Interview with Ilaria di Pian delle Ginestre

1. How was the glamping Pian delle Ginestre born?

Pian delle Ginestre was born from a lucky meeting, the one with my partner Roberto. When I first met him and he told me that he lived in Sassetta, despite being Tuscan (in the province of Lucca), I asked him: “Where is Sassetta?”.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

In just one moment I fell in love with these beautiful places.

I left my job in the family business and then I moved here, where my passion for cooking, hospitality and conviviality has merged with Roberto’s ability to give shape to any material.

This is how this eco-glamping project was born: from the desire to start again with a project that wasn’t only compatible with our dreams, but also with our love for nature.

Ecobnb Toscana

2. Which are the eco strategies used in your glamping?

  • The tents are perfectly integrated with the forest around them. What’s more, to install them we did not use a single brick.
  • We only use bio cleaning products. In addition, we use waste water for irrigation thanks to our phytomediation system.
  • The lights are low-energy and they have photocells for automatic shutdown.
  • All biodegradable waste is used to produce compost. The rest of the waste is, obviously, differentiated.
  • We have an olive grove and a small vegetable garden where we produce organic food. In addition, all the products we use to cook come from local farms.

Cibo organico

In addition, we do not have a TV and, also, I would want this structure to be wifi free. Nowadays, this could seem a little bit difficult, since so many people do smart working and need internet. However, this could be appreciated by people who just want to switch off.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

Since this is a protected landscape area, we are not allowed to place photovoltaic panels. However, we are considering to install a charging station for electric cars.

We have so many projects, but we are a small company so, we must go on one step at a time.

Glamping

3. Which kind of holiday do you offer to your guests?

This is the right place if you want to listen to the noises of the forest or just discover its smell but at the same time, sleeping bags and uncomfortable beds aren’t your cup of tea. Additionally, here you can walk or ride your bike around the beautiful landscapes which surround the glamping or just go to the nearby spa.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

A place where you can taste healthy and genuine foods, full of tradition. We want to offer our guests the chance to have a guided hiking itinerary, with a stop in one of the many wineries of Bolgheri.

Cantine

4. Which are the green tours and things we cannot miss nearby?

We are in a unique territory and there are so many things to do: the sea is 15 minutes away. Also, we are in a forest full of trails for trekking, bicycles and horses.

We are surrounded by villages full of charm and history and some of the most important art cities of Tuscany.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

We have the spa of Sassetta just 700 meters away and, dulcis in fundo, the vineyards and the good red wine of Bolgheri are 10 minutes from here.

In addition, we work with expert guides and bike instructors to offer customized itineraries to discover the territory. We are planning to organize experiences for our guests that include:

  • Guided nature trails
  • Wine and food tastings
  • Acess to the spa
  • Personalized fitness and wellness treatments

One of the things we particularly insist on is to try to discover the benefits and energy of the forest that surrounds us.

5. What does it mean to you to be Eco-friendly?

Being an Ecobnb, for me, means to have respect of what is around me: human beings, animals, tree and nature in general.

A cycle route from the Alps to the sea in Friuli A cycle route from the Alps to the sea in Friuli A cycle route from the Alps to the sea in Friuli

You leave from Tarvisio and you arrive in Grado and, by pedaling, you enjoy every step, every lovely landscape surrounded by fairy mountains, every incredible glimpse of bucolic nature until you reach the sea. Alpe Adria is made up of 180 kilometers of truly unbelievable bicycle path, that you can’t miss and you must live fully. The cycle route crosses very different territories, so the cyclist can admire the lake, the rivers, the streams, the gentle morainic hills, lulled by the sound of lush waterfalls.

Although it is not completed yet, this cycle route is still viable with short alternative routes. It is easy to meet German and Austrian cyclists, considering that the continuation of Alpe Adria cycling goes to Strasbourg.

An incredible nature, which changes every few meters, but not only that. This cycle route also offers the chance to discover beautiful towns, villages and World Heritage Sites. For example, the capital of Friuli, an authentic treasure trove, the starred town of Palmanova, and the delightful Chiusaforte station, that has become a refreshment point for cyclists and small museums and the beautiful village of Venzone.

You leave from the state border (or for full experience you can leave from Strasbourg) and then go to the village of Malborghetto, at the foot of the masses of the Julian Alps, following the route of a disused railway. After the village of Venzone, one of the most beautiful in Italy, in the Natural Park of the Julian Prealpes, you reach Bordano which houses the Butterflies House, a museum of greenhouses where more than 400 species of butterflies live free. It also goes around the best area of Italy for birdwatching, namely the Foce d’Isonzo Nature Reserve. Before reaching the beaches of Grado, you can admire the Archaeological Area of Aquileia, a World Heritage Site.

Between the meadows and orchids, between ancient Venetian palaces and city-fortresses, between spectacular tunnels and bridges, between streams and lakes, between the Alps and the sea, the cyclist enjoys all the beauty of Friuli, enjoying every moment of traveling.

Appian Way is the mother of all European roads, an exciting journey to discover the history of Rome. The Regina Viarum (queen of roads), so named by the Romans, is a trip for wayfarers, a laic pilgrimage in the footsteps of the giants of history.

The history of Appian Way began in 312 B.C. with the project of the censor Appio Claudio to unite the city with Capua, through Ariccia, Terracina, Fondi, Itri, Formia, Minturno, and Mondagone. The work continued in parallel with the conquests in southern Italy, and in 190 BC the way reached the port of Brindisi, becoming the commercial street to the East. Later the road was often forgotten and rediscovered, but after more than 2000 years is still there, offering travelers the opportunity of a unique journey, made of indelible sensations and evocative glimpses of the past.

Cover all 550 km of the Appian Way is tiring and exciting venture in the amazing lands of Lazio, Campania, and Puglia; but the richest in historical artifacts stretch is the initial, near the capital, among tombs, epitaphs and monuments.
