Travelling by train may not be as comfortable as driving your own car, which can offer the freedom to decide wherever you want to go without depending on public transport and its time schedules; it is also not as fast as flying on a plane, which rarely stops over during a flight and instead directly reaches the destination. The train might not be your first choice, but Europe is trying to change people’s minds. Indeed, this eco-friendly means of transport allows you to visit every desired place, especially in The Old Continent, where the railway network is highly developed.

This is one of the reasons why national railway companies have started to improve their routes connecting European countries to one another like France, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and – across the Channel – England. Not only are all major cities connected to each other, but travellers are also given the possibility to travel by night and not to “waste” any precious daytime for visiting. Passengers can sleep either in couchettes or in sleepers, depending on their budgets, and they can also have dinner in the restaurant car on board.

The new paths

An ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen, i.e., the Austrian federal railways) train will connect the stunning Paris to Vienna, passing through the Marne Valley and across the Rhine River, following the same route as the Orient Express – before it was withdrawn in 2009.

Another route that comes across the Rhine is the one going from Amsterdam to Zürich, available for both the night and the day. ÖBB has really expanded its network by adding a train going from Stuttgart to Vienna called “Bregenzerwald”, i.e. Bregenzer Forest, named after an Austrian region that confines with Germany. The route isn’t the fastest, but it surely is the most mesmerizing path that allows to admire Lake Constance and to follow the Empress Elizabeth Railway.

Another unpredictable route is the one connecting the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, to Budapest: it will leave you with a hint of melancholy, allowing you to travel in the Europe of the past and admiring how it has changed over the last 30 years by crossing the line of the former iron curtain.

Budapest

We leave for now Eastern Europe to go West: Spain is quietly improving its high-speed network not only by opening a new railway going from Madrid, the capital, to the autonomous community of Galicia last autumn, but also by shortening the time needed to reach Santiago de Compostela. Here you can find
the shrine of St. James, the ultimate goal of the “Camino de Santiago”, which is the 1,000-year-old pilgrimage that gather yearly more than 200 thousand pilgrims.

In Italy, the private operator NTV Italo has served Genoa, connecting it to Naples, following the coastal railway and offering in this way a one-of-a-kind journey.

Trespassing national borders, Trenitalia counterattacked with a twice-daily Frecciarossa (highspeed) Train linking the two European “fashion capitals”, Milan and Paris.

Sadly, sometimes promises are difficult to be kept and projects can be delayed or, worse, cancelled,
due to bureaucratic or economic reasons: it is needless to say that the pandemic is not helping.

The direct train that should have accompanied you from Warsaw to Lithuania won’t happen before
mid-2023, for example. Moreover, a high-speed Allegro train had started to better connect the Russian Federation to Finland last December, but of course, due to the current tragic war every route has been temporarily suspended. The same goes for the direct trains from Przemysl (Poland) to Ukraine.

We do believe in travelling as the truest way of living life, but in such circumstances, we cannot
recommend strongly enough to stay safe and be careful.

So, to wrap it up… you can travel across Europe and visit its major cities with the “eco-friendliest”
means of transportation in existence. Tickets can be adapted according to your economic needs.
You can travel during the night and also avoid long security-related procedures. Plus, you don’t
even have to worry about where to park!

What are you waiting for? Europe and its railways are welcoming you with open arms.

I have learned that the swiftest traveller is he that goes a-foot
Henry David Thoreau

January is the month of reports and good intentions, but we prefer rankings and above all new ideas for traveling! To start this 2022 on the right foot, we have thought about the best way to really discover a city, to immerse yourself in its atmosphere: walking. Only by wandering through the streets and alleys is it possible to feel like a local; dive into lesser-known neighborhood; experience the most authentic soul of the city.

But which cities are best suited to the traveler on foot? Waterfront promenades, human-sized historic centers and bridges that invite you to walk make some European destinations truly unmissable. And if we add some green tips and green B&Bs to sleep, then we can offer you the perfect holiday!

Walking among the alleys of Genoa

Genoa is a perfect Italian destination for a walking holiday

Genoa has the largest historical center in Europe. The only way to fully experience the beauty of its medieval alleys (caruggi) is walking; letting yourself be guided by the scent of the sea and slowly savoring its architectural treasures. Do not miss the promenade. Walking along Corso Italia until reaching Boccadasse is an unparalleled experience. What to add to tastings of focaccia and fresh pesto and sunsets over the port? Definitely a stay in an eco-sustainable accommodation designed for those traveling on foot, such as the Hotel Cairoli and the B&B Essiale.

Ups and downs in the colors of Lisbon

Walking in Lisbon allow you to discover all its beauty

Yes, there are trams, funiculars and even the tuc tuc to visit this city which is built on 7 hills. But walking through its streets and tackling its climbs on foot means being able to discover all the poetry and colors of Lisbon. The ideal starting point for a walking holiday in Lisbon is the Impact House Belém hostel, not far from the center and easily accessible by public transport.

Walking in Barcelona

Barcelona

Could we not include the Ramblas of Barcelona in our ranking? Despite its size and liveliness, the Catalan city is perfect for walking. In fact, it offers unforgettable walks full of surprises. From the Barri Gòtic, with its small streets and famous squares, to the port of Barceloneta, the city invites you in a mix of perfumes, art and history. To sleep in a eco-friendly way you can choose the Eco Youth Hostel or this comfortable apartment.

In the streets of Edinburgh

Walking in a narrow street of Edinburgh

Between witch stories, Gothic buildings and cobbled streets, Edinburgh is a truly enchanting destination. Walking in the Scottish capital will take you to discover Royal Mile, in the old town, the picturesque district of Leith and the castle. A Scotch tasting is a must!

Walking along the canals of Amsterdam

Amsterdam's canals

Also called Venice of the North, Amsterdam is best known for its many bicycles. But you can skirt its canals also on foot: this is the only way to discover every corner of the city and savor its atmosphere of freedom. Starting from the Hotel La Bohème you can go into the center of Amsterdam, visit the Van Gogh Museum and admire Dam Square and the baroque Royal Palace.

Let’s discover the unexpected beauty of Ljubljana, a vibrant city with thousands of years long history and that is now pointing to a green future.

Ljubljana is an amazing town, a small European gem that in a short time has become a model of livability and eco-sustainability for all medium-sized cities in Europe.

Ljubljana is the European Green Capital of 2016

Photo by Grant Bishop via Flickr

The first thing is the absence of cars and noise, the second the greenery: when you get to the city center quickly becomes clear why it was named European Green Capital. In just over ten years, Ljubljana, thanks to the administration and the citizens, has been transformed from a modern perspective, emphasizing its history and its culture, and proceeding quickly towards a green future, with zero emissions. New trees have been planted, a great and free public transport service has been created and the quality of life of citizens has been greatly improved.

Now the center is closed to traffic, and citizens and tourists move on foot or by bike, they take the Kavalir, free electric taxis or Urban, the bus, electric too, which connects the Town Hall Square with the Castle dominating the city from the hill Grajska Planota.

What to see in Ljubljana

At the center of the continent, Ljubljana has always been a crossroads of peoples, a city with a long history of 5000 years, still, be seen in its architecture and in its streets. But at the same time it is a young city, thanks to the presence of 22 university faculties, and particularly lively. Theaters, art galleries, local markets, and many events light up the Slovenian capital, without losing the relaxed and calm atmosphere that characterizes it.

Ljubljana is a place to discover slowly, without any programs: strolling along the Ljubljanica River, passing the picturesque bridges (first of all the Dragon Bridge, the symbol of the city), entering in the park Tivoli, in the center of the city, cycling through the baroque and Art Nouveau palaces, exploring the covered market, between a boat trip and a glass of Ganje (typical Slovenian grappa). And so, inevitably, you’ll fall in love with Ljubljana, an incredible city between past and future.

It will be an understatement to say that many of us didn’t spend this Halloween as we would want to. However, there’s hope that next year, as we’re out of this pandemic, we will be able to enjoy this holiday again and maybe even travel to places that offer spooky experiences.

Europe is undoubtedly one of those destinations, with its mysterious castles and their chilling stories. And, if going to Europe is in your plans next fall, we recommend visiting these three castles around Halloween to get the experiences that no other place in the world can offer.

1. Akershus Festning, Norway

Akershus Festning, one of the top haunted castles in Norway, Europe

Located in Norway’s capital of Oslo, Akershus fortress is one of the country’s most popular destinations, mostly for its medieval style.
However, every local will tell you that the fortress is haunted, and you can encounter many paranormal activities while visiting it.
Norwegians claim that because Akershus held a lot of prisoners in the past, their souls are still haunting this fortress to this day, seeking revenge. People report hearing whispers coming from the dark corridors, seeing shadow figures, and some even say they got pushed in their backs.
Whether it’s true or not, you need to experience Akershus by yourself to find out. But there is definitely a reason why people call it the most haunted place in Norway.

How to get there?

When in Oslo, use the city’s public transportation – busses number 31, 32, and 150, or trains number L1 and L2 to travel to the fortress.

2. Dalhousie Castle, Scotland

Visiting a haunted fortress is already fun, but would you like to sleep in a haunted place?
You can definitely do that in Dalhousie Castle, located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The castle also functions as a hotel and uses the rooms that are supposedly haunted as tourist attractions.
Dalhousie is rumored to be haunted by two little girls, and people say that one of them likes to tickle people’s feet when they are asleep. There is also a ghost of Lady Catherine, the mistress of one of the castle owners, who was killed by his wife. The castle staff calls her the Grey Lady, and you can sometimes hear her moans in the corridors of the castle.

How to get there?

The fastest and easiest way to get to the castle is to take the train to Newtongrange, and then get a taxi ride to the castle, which won’t take too long.

3. Moosham Castle, Austria

This is undoubtedly one of the oldest castles in Europe, built around 1191. Moosham castle withstood many historical hurdles, and its architectural style and location will definitely amaze you.
Moosham castle is also rumored to be haunted by the witches who were prosecuted and killed there during the Salzburg witch trials between 1675 and 1690. During these trials, 139 people were killed, among them were also little children accused of witchcraft.
Vengeful spirits of those unlawfully prosecuted are still haunting this castle to this day. When visiting Moosham’s dungeons, you can feel their anger and pain, they will whisper in your ear, push you. Castle staff also claims you can still hear the prisoners cry at night for help.

How to get there?

The easiest way to get to Moosham is from Salzburg on bus number 270. The whole trip takes around two hours. However, if you don’t want to travel back and forth, you can rent a room in the hotel near the castle.

Go to Europe for the Ultimate Spooky Experience!

Even if you are a dedicated ghost hunter and think you’ve seen everything, Europe has a lot of surprises up its sleeve. The castles we described here today, with their chilling stories and terrifying inhabitants, will definitely win your heart.

But for those, who take ghosts and paranormal activities with a grain of salt, these castles are still a wonderful place to visit for their museums, architecture, and history.

Salzburg is a city that seduces and enchants everyone. It fascinates you for the musical tradition that you can breathe in every corner and which is the protagonist of countless festivals, for the beauty of its baroque buildings. It enchants you for the calm that its river infuses and for the fairytale atmosphere of the medieval alleys of the historic center. As if this wasn’t enough, Salzburg is a perfect destination for a low environmental impact holiday: it can be easily reached by train, you can visit it on foot or by bike without any problems and there is no shortage of organic restaurants.

The Hohensalzburg fortress watches over the city from the top of Mount Festungsberg and immediately catches the eye of all of us travelers. We can reach it on foot or by funicular, to visit the rooms with the original furnishings and the two museums that now are in what is certainly the symbol of Salzburg and the oh the archbishop’s power. After admiring the city and the green surroundings from the castle, it is time to immerse ourselves in the streets of the center and discover all the treasures of this Austrian city.

Its baroque heart is divided in two by the Salzach river: on the right bank, the Mirabell Castle awaits us, with its royal garden, together with the most modern area of the city, on the left bank there is the old town, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here we find the house in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. To the musical genius Salzburg owes its identity as a music metropolis. The house, now a beautiful museum, is located on Getreidegasse, a pedestrian street where we can admire the wrought iron signs typical of medieval shops and the high facades in typical Salzburg style. Among churches, palaces and baroque fountains we cannot fail to stop in front of the refined beauty of the Cathedral, in the splendid Residenzplatz, or immerse ourselves in culture thanks to the 50 galleries and 20 museums of the city.

The surroundings of Salzburg offer emotions too. A few steps from the city we can discover magnificent natural landscapes, bike on the many cycle paths such as the Tauern cycle path, admire the Krimml waterfall, which with its 380 meters of height is among the largest in Europe, discover everything about the extraction of salt, climb the peaks that surround the city or even diving into one of the many and enchanting lakes. Furthermore, the Salzburger Land is the region of Europe where there’s the highest concentration of organic farms: we certainly cannot miss the opportunity to discover a lifestyle in harmony with the earth and natural resources and its genuine, healthy and authentic flavors.

Salzburg, city of festivals

Salzburg is the stage of the world. Mozart’s music seems to resonate everywhere, and the city celebrates culture at all times, offering around 4,500 cultural events throughout the year. In 1920 Max Reinhardt, among others, inaugurated the Salzburg Festival, one of the most important festivals of classical music, theater and opera in the world. Then there is the jazz festival, the Winterfest, a circus arts festival and the magic of Salzburg Advent Songs. No matter what period you choose, Salzburg will welcome you with a truly incredible event.

Typical and organic flavors of Salzburg

Salzburg is able to satisfy everyone, from those looking for an elegant garden where they can relax to those who want to immerse themselves in culture, from those who love history to those who want to discover pristine nature. It is therefore not surprising that the gastronomic tradition is also up to par. In this land where agriculture is mainly sustainable, it is easy to find an organic restaurant that offers the typical products of the area: chanterelles, smoked speck, mountain cheeses, fine distilled spirits and the famous desserts. The Salzburger Nockerl is the best way to finish any meal: a delicious soufflé made up of three soft sweet dumplings that represent the mountain peaks that surround the city. Salzburg is also the Austrian capital of beer: why not take advantage of this holiday to fully understand the noble art of the master brewers and taste excellent beers?

A green stay

Green BioHotel zur Post

For a sustainable holiday, you must sleep in an eco-friendly accommodation! In Salzburg you’ll find the Green BioHotel zur Post, a modern and design hotel that uses only green energy and offers a delicious organic breakfast. The rooms combine the urban mood with the typical Austrian atmosphere, offering everything you need for an unforgettable holiday. There is also a small wellness center.
