What green behaviors should you adopt at the beach to be environmentally conscious even while on vacation? According to Legambiente’s Beach Litter 2023 initiative, which monitored the amount of litter on 38 Italian beaches, over 37,000 pieces of trash were counted in May alone.

Over 70% of the waste collected on these beaches is composed of plastic and other synthetic polymers, materials that can take anywhere from a hundred to a thousand years to decompose in nature! Topping the list of the most frequent types of waste found on Italian beaches are plastic fragments (about 10% of the total waste); followed by caps and lids (over 8% of the total); cigarette butts (about 6% of the total); and plastic cotton swabs (4% of the total).

The “Beach Litter” initiative also includes an educational activity on how to keep the beaches clean and the importance of marine and coastal biodiversity. The aim is to monitor the waste left on our coastlines in the hope that talking about it can bring change.

So what can we do “in our small way”? Here are twelve tips to be environmentally conscious at the beach and on the shore.

1. Recycle

Respect recycling guidelines even on the beach. If you do it at home, why not do it on vacation? Remember to bring bags to collect and separate waste. If the beach lacks waste bins, the rule is to carry your waste with you. An interesting idea might be to organize “clean walking” outings with friends and family. While walking along the shoreline, use appropriate grabbers (and consider wearing gloves) to collect trash you find along the way. Biodegradable gloves and bags are available for maximum environmental respect.

2. Natural Beach Towels

Use beach towels made of cotton or natural bamboo fibers. Avoid plastic mats or synthetic materials. Indeed, several brands now offer special “environmentally friendly” lines.

3. Swimwear

Choose swimwear made from recycled materials or handmade options. When washing them, do it by hand using eco-friendly, gentle detergents.

4. Organic Sunscreen

Purchase sunscreens without oxybenzone and with mineral-based filters. Evidently, recent studies have shown that oxybenzone is a hazardous substance that contributes to coral reef destruction.

Opt for cotton mesh or canvas beach bags. Make sure to test their durability before leaving, especially if you’re like me and tend to carry a lot.

7. Pack Your Lunch

If you enjoy having lunch by the sea, use reusable and plastic-free cutlery and dishes. For example for lunch containers and water bottles, you can easily find bamboo or aluminum options in stores.

8. Sustainable Toys

If you want your children to do something different from building sandcastles, you can buy eco-friendly toys made of wood or recycled materials.

9. Don’t Collect Shells, Starfish, Flowers, or Sand, and Avoid Disturbing Marine Life

Perhaps you’re not aware, but the beach and the sea are ecosystems that must be preserved and protected. Taking home “souvenirs” not only disrupts these ecosystems (imagine if everyone did it), but it’s also illegal according to Article 1162 of the Navigation Code, not to mention what the Cassation Court has ruled in this regard.

10. No Bonfires

A bonfire may be beautiful and romantic, but it’s also very dangerous. If you can’t control the flames, they could take over and irreparably damage marine biodiversity, not to mention the serious harm they could cause to people.

11. No Smoking on the Beach

Avoid lighting up on the beach to reduce air pollution, discourage smoking, including passive smoking, improve the well-being of everyone, and reduce waste (those famous 6% of beach waste, i.e., cigarette butts).

12. Walk or bike to the beach

Finally, an important piece of advice. You’re on vacation, so arrive at the beach in a relaxed manner. Why the rush? So, walk or bike to the beach, and the environment will thank you, as sustainable mobility is essential.

During our blog-tour, we had the chance to discover the breathtaking nature and rich culture of this Italian region, as well as experience ethical shopping. As a matter of fact, we made some organic and zero-mile purchases in some of the most suggestive villages of Basilicata. We discovered unique places, boutiques, farmhouses and little shops where you can purchase extraordinary products while supporting the local economy. The bakery Tre Spighe is a true Lucan gem founded in 1990 by Angela Alberti. Angela, who is fond of the Lucan culinary tradition, moved for love from Switzerland to Marsico Nuovo, a small village in Basilicata. With her son Francesco, graduated in Economics, and a team of collaborators, Angela created a unique place where the art of bread and handmade pasta reaches its peak. With great care and passion, they daily give life to authentic culinary masterpieces which have received more and more praise over the years.

What makes the products of the bakery Tre Spighe so unique? The answer is simple: the careful selection of raw materials. The traditional flours get mixed with ingredients like wild fennel of the Lucan mountains, crusco pepper PGI Senise, turmeric, hot pepper from Calabria and a range of aromatic seed.

3. Rossella And Her Zero-Mile Spot In Avigliano

In Via Roma, the oldest street in the middle of the historic centre of Avigliano, we came across a spot known for the typical flavours of Basilicata. In the past, this suggestive street was dotted with artisan shops. Nowadays, Angolo di Rossella is the greatest example of this rich tradition. The little shop is a traditional boutique which offers a real culinary journey through the specialties of Basilicata.

The owner, Rossella, is really fond of the Lucan food and she engages in discovering culinary hidden gems to later offer her customers. Among her specialties you can find caramelized grapes, the jam Mele del Peccato, babbà, a range of pickles coming from Pietra Pertosa, the delicious honey with propolis of the organic farm Le Api in Volo, local wheat pasta of Matera, pecorino of Avigliano and Canestrato of Moliterno, which is a cheese season in wicked baskets (“canestre”).

However, Angolo di Rossella is not just a shopping spot. It is also a gym for food lovers. As a matter of fact, Rossella organizes some courses to create seasonal and zero-mile dishes. By doing that, she allows everyone to discover ancient recipes and get to know the flavours and traditions of this fascinating Italian region.

Its origins are very ancient and date back to Asia Minor and Eastern Europe. Today, it is also cultivated in Italy as a product of excellence, especially in the regions of Umbria, Sardinia and Abruzzo.

Another common name is that of red gold, because it is a much sought-after and equally expensive commodity. The cultivation and harvesting of the red pistils is done exclusively by hand, only in autumn and in the early hours of the morning. Just think that to produce one kilogram of saffron, it is necessary to harvest more than 100,000 flowers!

Properties and benefits of saffron

The most common use of saffron here in Italy is certainly in cooking, where it serves mainly as a colouring and flavouring agent for dishes. One of the most typical dishes in the Lombardy tradition, but also a general Italian symbol abroad, is saffron risotto.
As a spice, it is used to enrich and enhance the flavours of the food it accompanies. Among the most famous and tasty combinations are those with shellfish, seafood, delicate sauces and stewed meats.

But this is not the only way we can use saffron.

According to several studies, this spice has beneficial effects on brain activity. This is because saffron is rich in active ingredients that produce dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline, i.e. mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. Being a sedative, this can be used to make herbal teas and infusions to calm anxiety.

It is also an extremely useful and effective product for the intestines. It serves to improve digestive functions and improve intestinal balance. The production of digestive saffron liqueurs is very typical.

It is interesting how this spice is used in India. They use it to cure everyday ailments such as sore throats, colds, coughs or fevers. In short, a true grandmother’s remedy!

Itineraries to discover saffron in Italy

1. The saffron roads in Abruzzo

The province of L’Aquila is one of the areas where this saffron is produced in Italy. L’Aquila saffron with PDO denomination has been harvested and cultivated here for generations. The production area is very wide and includes no less than 13 municipalities in the province of L’Aquila.

Set off from the splendid regional capital and be bewitched by the splendour of the Gran Sasso. From here, head south to enter the Navelli plateau. In the flowering season, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the purple fields of saffron flowers all around you.

A monk from Navelli imported the spice to Abruzzo during the 13th century by a monk from Navelli. It found a favourable habitat on this plateau, a propensity for trade and a flourishing use in cooking and in the ancient pharmacy.

You can buy saffron all year round in shops, in stigmas or powder form. The peculiarity of L’Aquila Saffron PDO is its high concentration of lime and potassium, which give it a stronger taste than other varieties.

In the province of Medio Campidano in Sardinia, there is extensive saffron production. Specifically, this is cultivated in the municipalities of San Gavino Monreale, Turri and Villanovafranca.

It continues to Villanovafranca, a village where you can revive tradition every day, thanks to its exceptionally important agricultural centre.
