Travelling is good: here are the main psychophysical, cognitive, and social benefits of travel

No matter the reason for it and how it develops, people have always been prone to travelling. From ancient times to the post-Covid era, the need for travelling has always marked the human experience; but have you ever wondered why the simple fact of planning a vacation, packing your suitcase and setting off for a destination which is located outside of our comfort zone gets us so excited and makes us happy and somehow better? The answer is unequivocal: travelling is good for your mind and your body. As a matter of fact, the travel experience encompasses a combination of factors that lead to countless psychophysical, cognitive, and social benefits. Let’s see which are the main ones.

It Reduces Stress

It might seem obvious, but travelling is definitely the best option to get away for some time from the daily routine which may result in a lot of stress and emotional turmoil for a lot of people. In fact, all of us need to take a break from the monotony in order to regain our psychophysical balance, and what better way to do it than travelling?

It Increases Creativity

Travelling is good for our creativity, makes us more creative and curious, and broadens our horizons. As a matter of fact, according to several studies, getting out of our comfort zone, exploring different places, and coming into contact with new people and cultures enable us to stimulate the neural connections of our brain, therefore allowing us to open our minds. Technically speaking, according to Adam Galinsky, social psychologist at the Columbia University in New York, travelling improves what he calls our “cognitive flexibility.

It Makes Us Better People

Travelling is good from a social point of view, too: travelling (especially but not only abroad) is a great engine of personal growth. Learning how to develop empathy towards people and their cultures, communicate better, handle unforeseen situations, face the unknown, and think differently are just some of the many positive effects to which only the experience of travelling can lead.

It Improves Cardiovascular Health

If the benefits as mentioned before weren’t enough, various studies and research show that people who travel during the year are also less exposed to cardiovascular disease. In fact, stress reduction combined with the “antidepressant” effect of travelling is literally good for your heart.

Travelling is good, and you have no more excuses. Pack your suitcase and set off: travel, it will do you good!

Is wearing makeup an important part of your daily routine? Well, did you know that most makeup products are tested on animals before hitting the shelves? And by testing, we mean experimented on, tortured, and killed.

Help put an end to this by considering these 5 cruelty-free makeup tips.

1. If it’s disposable, forget it!

Almost everyone loves disposable makeup products for different reasons:

  • Affordability. Disposables always cost a fraction of the price you would pay for regular ones. These usually go on sale, too, which entices you to buy them in bulk.
  • Cleanliness. Disposable makeup products feel much cleaner to use. You will always use new ones and never have to repeat them. Ever.
  • Convenience. You don’t have to clean them after use. Just toss them in the bin, and move on with your day. It’s as simple as that.

Unfortunately, the benefits you get from using disposable makeup products have a price to pay. These are not as biodegradable as companies claim them to be and are harmful to animals. For instance, regular cotton pads go through mixing and bleaching processes, which slow down their biodegradation process.

Regular cotton swabs are even worse. Their stems are usually made of plastic, which takes hundreds to thousands of years to break down. Meanwhile, creatures get trapped in them or mistake them as food, just like the famous news about a seahorse carrying a cotton swab.

So, here’s our first cruelty-free makeup tip for you: opt for reusable products. Reusables help reduce millions of makeup products disposed of everyday.

For instance, reusable cotton pads by LastObject, Waste Less Shop or EcoRoots replace 1,000 disposable cotton rounds. These are also made from organic materials and are great for your skin. Just give them a gentle cleaning after each use, and they will be good as new. Once you have maximized their lifecycle, simply toss them in your compost bin.

In addition, reusables will help you spend less in the long run, as they reduce your need to keep buying. By switching to reusables, you will definitely help save animals and the planet.

2. Always do your research

We often come across makeup products with labels such as “Organic”, “Pure”, and “100% Natural”. Only later on do we find out these are animal-tested, harmful for our skin, and damaging to the environment. But how does the beauty industry get away with this practice?

According to the FDA, cosmetic ingredients and products need not undergo premarket approval, except for color additives and restricted ingredients. Brands are also not required to prove that their ingredients are safe. And if brands feel the need to do some testing, they may perform any kind of test procedure.

Such procedures usually involve using toxic ingredients on mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and more. The creatures end up suffering and are either killed or used for subsequent procedures. But most of them die during the experiment.

If you want to do something about this, here’s another cruelty-free makeup tip for you: do your research. Check each ingredient written on the label. Research on the company behind the product And make sure the products are not tested on animals.

By doing your research, you will save your skin and innocent creatures from toxic and falsely-labelled products.

3. Go Organic

Organic makeup products are not just great for your skin. Most of these are cruelty-free and ethically sourced. For instance, Axiology is a makeup line that focuses on creating vegan and “evil-free” makeup. According to the brand, “Makeup shouldn’t just be safe for the people who wear it. It should also be safe for animals, the planet and the people who make it.” Their packaging is also plastic-free. So, if you want to practice a cruelty-free makeup routine, our third tip for you is to look for organic brands.

4. Buy Only What You Need

The cosmetic industry produces over 120 billion packaging units every year. A majority of these end up being tossed away even when they are barely used. Out of the total packaging units, only 7% is recycled. The rest are filling landfills and destroying marine ecosystems.

This habit and trend of buying constantly is not only a waste of money, but it’s also harmful to animals and the environment. Changing it will take time, but you can do your part with this fourth cruelty-free makeup tip: buy only what you need.

To help you, give yourself at least 2 weeks before buying a product. If you lose interest in it within that time frame, then you don’t need it!

5. Seek Advice

Adopting a cruelty-free makeup routine can be a challenge. There are endless tips online that will leave you confused and overwhelmed. And if you have no clue on cruelty-free products, you will go through a lot of trials and errors.

Fortunately, there are communities and experts online that you can seek advice from. Reach out to them, and they will willingly answer your questions. You can also ask friends and relatives that practice this lifestyle.

Overtime, you will develop a deeper understanding of living this lifestyle.

Now that you have these tips, you are more than ready to start practicing a cruelty-free makeup routine!

With global warming on the rise, climate change is affecting our lives in ways that we might never have even imagined. We have heard about different seasons presenting different threats. The west coast experiences wildfires, whereas the east coast deals with hurricanes. Now, people are wondering whether there are any other dangers that they need to be aware of, such as air pollution season.

Although pollution can seem like a year-long challenge, it fluctuates depending on the time of the year. As climate change accelerates, pollution intensity is expected to increase. The combination of air pollution season coupled with climate change is a recipe for disaster.

Countries across the globe, from Pakistan to Brazil, are experiencing unprecedented air pollution season. This post dives deeper into the subject.

Ozone: The Good and the Bad

cars and air pollution

Photo by Jacek Dylag on Unsplash

To better understand the air pollution season with climate change, it is important to learn about the ozone. It is a gas that is made up of three different oxygen atoms. These atoms form in the upper atmosphere naturally.

The ozone is crucial for our existence as a species. It helps protect the Earth from UV radiation. On the other hand, ground-level ozone is not formed naturally, unlike high-altitude ozone, despite the two being chemically equivalent.

Instead, ground-level ozone is a byproduct of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides that react to sunlight and heat. These pollutants are produced by emissions from industrial plants, wildfire smoke, refineries, electric unities, and exhaust from cars.

Since ground-level ozone does not rise, it ends up building at the Earth’s surface. This means that we end up breathing in dangerous pollutants.

One of the main causes of ground-level ozone is the existence of urban areas. However, winds transport the ozone hundreds of kilometers away to other regions.

Weather conditions and topography influence the formation and transportation of ozone. Thus, some regions have a lower air quality.

Climate Change and Air Quality

climate change and air quality

Photo by Henk Mul on Unsplash

Climate change and air pollution are correlated. The reason behind this is that air pollutants and greenhouse gases have the same source. The two determine air quality.

Since ozone levels are affected by weather, volatile organic compounds and photochemical reactions depend on bright sunshine and high temperatures. These conditions are possible during the summer.

High temperatures result in dry weather conditions, which contribute to high ozone levels. Drought stress affects vegetation which only further hampers the condition.

Research shows that hemispheric background concentration would only increase as forest fires become more common. Climate change is expected to increase the nitrate burden along with other aerosol species, and this would only further worsen the air pollution season. Besides this, the increase in wildfires will present more challenges.

The fact is that nitrogen oxides, non-methane VOCs, and carbon monoxide reduce the oxidant power of the atmosphere. This increases the life of methane which is a warming agent.

On the other hand, sulfur dioxide has the potential to convert to sulfate particles which may have a cooling ability.

Air pollution season is only likely worse with climate change speeding up. Populations will need to wear facemasks and use air purifiers if the trend continues since the WHO (World Health Organization) reported that air pollution kills 7 million people every year.

Need for New Laws

Photo by Mladen Borisov on Unsplash

People are suffering from respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer due to air pollution. It is possible that seeing a clear blue sky might become a luxury in the near future. Hence, new laws must be enacted.

Policies at the city, state, and national levels are required to help clean the air and ensure a safer environment for everyone. Developing local policies is just not enough as there is a need to consider things from a global perspective.

The truth is that anything that happens in the world affects everyone. Only through landfill maintenance, clean water efforts, recycling initiatives, and regulations on Co2 emissions are it possible to reduce air pollution during the heavy season.

Weather Events Impact the Air

Bush fire in Australia

The year 2020 saw the worst wildfires in Australia. Then, wildfire season wreaked havoc on Western America. Particulate matter was released by the fires, which is deleterious to inhale.

Anyone that inhales these particles suffers from lasting respiratory damage as the particles penetrate deep into the lungs and flow through the bloodstream.

Air pollution season will be intense with climate change.

Indoor Air Pollution

plants can help to reduce indoor pollution

Photo by Brina Blum on Unsplash

Since the air pollution season will only get worse, the number of contaminants will only increase. Therefore, people will prefer to spend time indoors. However, it does not mean that they would be entirely safe.

When the HV/AC unit circulates fresh air through the home, one should not expect that every particle would be caught by the low-quality filters. Hence, people will install only the best air filters to reduce dust, allergens, and pollution.

Furthermore, plants can help in cleaning the indoor air and reducing domestic pollution.

It is important to note that air pollution also affects the rate at which viruses spread. Anyone who lives in a high-risk zone has no option but to install a filter that effectively blocks out 99 percent of particles.

Neighborhoods require sensors as air pollution worsens. It is important to monitor the air quality and use the insights for better decision-making.

Besides, low-income communities tend to live in neighborhoods that have been developed on cheap land due to nearby pollution sources.

By attaching air sensors in homes, it is possible to monitor indoor and outdoor air quality. The data obtained can be used by local governments for green alternative funding.

The technology can help find solutions to combat the air pollution season. Each software development company is also trying to develop something unique for the masses.

Sensors provide a variety of information, including air quality, the presence of air particles, and more. Moreover, there are plenty of affordable air sensors that are available today.

Conclusion

trees for a better future

With climate change on the rise, air pollution season is something that we all need to be prepared for.

The coming future will be more difficult. Hence, it is important to raise our voices and fight for a better future. The only way to preserve our planet is by working together.

Immerse yourself in the silence of centuries-old woods. As a matter of fasct, here you can stay in an eco-friendly glamping, which offers the freedom to feel close to nature and at the same time the comfort of a five-star experience.

There are so many things you can do here: explore ancient villages on the hills, walk through the woods or ride your e-bike to reach the sea. In addition, you can try the beneficial waters of Sassetta and taste local wines.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea
Let’s find out every detail behind the story of this ecobnb.

Starting from scratch, in the nature of Tuscany. Interview with Ilaria di Pian delle Ginestre

1. How was the glamping Pian delle Ginestre born?

Pian delle Ginestre was born from a lucky meeting, the one with my partner Roberto. When I first met him and he told me that he lived in Sassetta, despite being Tuscan (in the province of Lucca), I asked him: “Where is Sassetta?”.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

In just one moment I fell in love with these beautiful places.

I left my job in the family business and then I moved here, where my passion for cooking, hospitality and conviviality has merged with Roberto’s ability to give shape to any material.

This is how this eco-glamping project was born: from the desire to start again with a project that wasn’t only compatible with our dreams, but also with our love for nature.

Ecobnb Toscana

2. Which are the eco strategies used in your glamping?

  • The tents are perfectly integrated with the forest around them. What’s more, to install them we did not use a single brick.
  • We only use bio cleaning products. In addition, we use waste water for irrigation thanks to our phytomediation system.
  • The lights are low-energy and they have photocells for automatic shutdown.
  • All biodegradable waste is used to produce compost. The rest of the waste is, obviously, differentiated.
  • We have an olive grove and a small vegetable garden where we produce organic food. In addition, all the products we use to cook come from local farms.

Cibo organico

In addition, we do not have a TV and, also, I would want this structure to be wifi free. Nowadays, this could seem a little bit difficult, since so many people do smart working and need internet. However, this could be appreciated by people who just want to switch off.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

Since this is a protected landscape area, we are not allowed to place photovoltaic panels. However, we are considering to install a charging station for electric cars.

We have so many projects, but we are a small company so, we must go on one step at a time.

Glamping

3. Which kind of holiday do you offer to your guests?

This is the right place if you want to listen to the noises of the forest or just discover its smell but at the same time, sleeping bags and uncomfortable beds aren’t your cup of tea. Additionally, here you can walk or ride your bike around the beautiful landscapes which surround the glamping or just go to the nearby spa.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

A place where you can taste healthy and genuine foods, full of tradition. We want to offer our guests the chance to have a guided hiking itinerary, with a stop in one of the many wineries of Bolgheri.

Cantine

4. Which are the green tours and things we cannot miss nearby?

We are in a unique territory and there are so many things to do: the sea is 15 minutes away. Also, we are in a forest full of trails for trekking, bicycles and horses.

We are surrounded by villages full of charm and history and some of the most important art cities of Tuscany.

Pian delle Ginestre: an Eco-Glamping in Tuscany among Woods, Spas and Sea

We have the spa of Sassetta just 700 meters away and, dulcis in fundo, the vineyards and the good red wine of Bolgheri are 10 minutes from here.

In addition, we work with expert guides and bike instructors to offer customized itineraries to discover the territory. We are planning to organize experiences for our guests that include:

  • Guided nature trails
  • Wine and food tastings
  • Acess to the spa
  • Personalized fitness and wellness treatments

One of the things we particularly insist on is to try to discover the benefits and energy of the forest that surrounds us.

5. What does it mean to you to be Eco-friendly?

Being an Ecobnb, for me, means to have respect of what is around me: human beings, animals, tree and nature in general.

Sharing this lifestyle with people like us is, therefore, not a job, but first of all a passion.

Do you want to approach the world of natural medicine and discover its enormous benefits? You can do this by staying in one of these green accommodations…

What do we mean by naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine, or Naturopathy, is an approach which aims at treating and healing diseases through the use of natural remedies, such as herbs or minerals. Naturopaths believe that wellness is man’s natural state of being. That’s why they try to encourage patients’ self-inherent healing process as naturally and gently as possible. They prefer to treat the root causes of an illness and teach patients how to improve their health rather than just stop the symptoms.

Naturopathic medicine includes several treatment approaches: Chinese medicine, Bach Flower remedies, Aromatherapy and many other. Some of them date back to ancient tradition while others are recent. Nevertheless, this natural approach was burn centuries ago, when men had no other medical treatment than healing herbs.

Naturopathy has been very popular over recent years. More and more people resort to essential oils, massage therapy or reflexology to treat many different sicknesses. Sleeping disorders, migraines, mental and physical fatigue are just some of them.

Benefits of Naturopathic Medicine

Why should we choose Naturopathic Medicine?

Meditation and Relaxation

First of all this approach takes into great account both the physical and emotional state of the patient. Therefore naturopaths try to investigate many aspects of one’s life in order to better help him/her achieve health and inner peace. Meditation, relaxation and an honest and efficient doctor-patient communication are really important to assure the healing process.

What is more, these techniques are surely less invasive than traditional medicines. Indeed natural remedies do not risk to weaken our health and do not have contraindications.

Lastly, naturopathic medicine employs resources which exist in nature. Therefore, it is economically and environmentally sustainable since resources do to undergo long and expensive chemical processes.

The natural approach can be very helpful during such a difficult moment. Coronavirus forced us to abandon our daily routine and to spend most of the time at home. However, this “extraordinary” situation risks compromising our physical and mental health and lead to concentration issues, anxiety, and insomnia. So a great solution could be to flood the house with energizing scents or to prepare infusions of calming herbs.

Nature can be our ally, even when it doesn’t seem to be. We have often talked about the benefits of forests, and scientific studies that show that nature is not only pleasant to have but also essential for our physical health and our cognitive functions are more and more. And they tell us that nature also helps strengthen our immune system.

How forests improve the immune system

How forests improve the immune system

A research from Nippon Medical School in Japan of 2010 has shown that spending time in a forest brings a significant increase in the number of natural killer cells, or NK cells, a type of cytotoxic lymphocyte essential for the innate immune system. The study was conducted by dividing the participants into two groups: the first made a small trip through the forests, the second visited a city. In the participants of the first group, the scientists noted not only the increase in NK, but also in the intracellular anticancer proteins. The effect lasted for the whole week after the trip. The ability to strengthen the immune system would be attributable to terpenes, substances emitted by trees capable of stimulating when you breathe them the increase of antibodies and anti-cancer proteins.

Our immune system needs forests

So Shinrin-yoku, a Japanese term that indicates what we also know as “Forest Bathing”, is much more than a trend of the moment. It’s a therapy. It means benefiting from the atmosphere of forest. It means taking care of our health. A cure-all for our immune system, but not only. Walking in the woods also reduces stress and decreases heart rate and blood pressure.

This is just another example of the benefits of nature, we must remember that trees serve the entire planet. Each tree absorbs CO2, lowers temperatures, increases air quality, increases biodiversity. This is why we must protect forests and continue planting trees.
