The journey to discover a place, a culture, a corner of the world undoubtedly also goes through food. Every dish we taste tells us a story, an identity, a relationship with nature.

If you too believe that gastronomic experiences are a key element of travel and always seek information in advance about local products and traditional recipes, we have a destination to recommend that you absolutely cannot miss.

A little-known and incredibly authentic corner of Piedmont offers an interesting cuisine and a wide variety of renowned local products: the Valle Maira.

Photo via Canva Pro

Impressive mountains, endless forests, and vast meadows give life to a wild and enchanting land that continues to maintain timeless charm and unspoiled nature. The villages of Valle Maira live every day the most authentic mountain experience, perhaps different from what we know, more rugged but at the same time welcoming and poignant.

The ancient Occitan gastronomic tradition

In Valle Maira, ancient Occitan traditions meet Piedmontese traditions. Even in the kitchen. The result of this union is something to taste and discover! Each dish reflects the people’s connection with nature and the mountains: the flavors are simple and genuine, strongly linked to what the land produces season after season.

The trade of anchovies, whose origins are still unknown, has enriched and influenced the local cuisine. There’s Bagna Cauda, which accompanies seasonal vegetables, but there are also numerous other recipes that make this fish an important protagonist, celebrated during the feast of San Marcelin and the Anchovy Fair in Macra and Dronero. Another absolute star of the mountain cuisine of Valle Maira is the potato. It is used, for example, to prepare ravioles, dumplings made of potatoes, flour, and eggs, seasoned with butter and cream, or the rich one-pot dish called Mato. Another typical Occitan recipe no traveler should miss is gnocchi al Castelmagno.

Among the local produce, we also mention honey, cheeses, and the particular gogiu pear.

A holiday in Valle Maira

Valle Maira captivates us right from the start with its flavors, but not only that. It is a perfect destination for those who want to experience the mountain in an authentic way and for all nature and outdoor activities enthusiasts. Located among the Cozie Alps, the valley offers breathtaking landscapes, hiking trails, and a variety of sports activities for all levels.

Valle Maira offers hikers an extensive network of trails that wind through forests, alpine meadows, and small mountain villages. You can choose from hikes of varying difficulty, from a tranquil walk along flat trails to the more challenging ascent of alpine peaks. Cycling enthusiasts will find numerous routes in Valle Maira suitable for both mountain biking and road cycling. There are also climbing walls, opportunities for water sports, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing itineraries.

Where to stay sustainably and green in the villages of Valle Maira

Valle Maira consists of 13 municipalities and numerous small villages where life flows slowly and in harmony with the surrounding environment. To fully experience this atmosphere and the mountain way of life, there is no better place than Borgata Sagna Rotonda.

It is a small mountain village restored to its ancient splendor by Giovanni and Teresina, who renovated what remained while considering the historical value of the buildings and using modern construction and plant techniques, as well as alternative and environmentally friendly energy sources. Now Sagna Rotonda offers 10 cozy and comfortable housing units, perfect for a zero-impact stay in Valle Maira.

Wellness area

Inside an old stone-vaulted stable, a small wellness area has been created, exclusively reserved for an hour for those who make a reservation. After a day exploring the flavors and landscapes of this lesser-known corner of Piedmont, you can enjoy the warmth of a Finnish sauna experience, interspersed with immersion in a tub filled with mountain spring water.

To continue exploring the unique flavors of Valle Maira, in Sagna Rotonda you will also find a small shop selling the best local products: honey, jams, flours, biscuits, as well as excellent wines, liqueurs, and craft beers. In the organic garden of Sagna Rotonda, you can freely pick seasonal vegetables, and in a nearby farm you can buy excellent cheeses, yogurt, and fresh milk, enjoying genuine products and at the same time supporting the local economy.

With its rich culture and beautiful natural landscapes, Turkey has a lot to offer to tourists interested in responsible travel: its national parks invite you to immerse yourself in untouched nature, and its villages to slow down and live just like a local. Are we ready to go?

Useful tips for your sustainable journey in Türkiye

Before leaving, it is important to organize your trip well and take into consideration some aspects for an eco-friendly holiday:

  • Choose public transport to get around. Turkey’s landscapes are incredibly beautiful and it would be a real shame to miss the opportunity to enjoy them even through the window of buses and trains. In recent years, the country has been expanding and improving the railway system and it is therefore increasingly comfortable and convenient to choose this means of transport.
  • Always avoid plastic bottles. If it is not possible to fill your bottle, always choose glass bottles.
  • Support the local economy. Choosing to buy local produce and eat in community-run restaurants can help preserve the culture of the region and support the local economy.
  • Choose sustainable activities. As seen, there are many sustainable activities to do in Turkey, such as hiking, bird watching, and wildlife viewing.

Don’t forget that American citizens need a visa to travel to Turkey from the US. The visa can be obtained in person or, much better, online. Here you find all the information about Turkey visa for US citizens.

Or maybe it’s the perfect blend of cosmopolitan cities, rural villages, and breathtaking nature. What is certain is that there is so much to do and see here in Turkey.

Ephesus, the most famous of the archaeological sites in Turkey
Photo via Canva Pro

There is Ephesus, the most famous of Turkish archaeological sites and one of the best preserved in the whole Mediterranean. It’s like walking through history. Its ruins take you from classical Greece to the Roman Empire, up to the spread of Christianity.

Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is also a must. Considered one of the most beautiful trails in the world, it follows a well-marked 500km route between Fethiye and Antalya. Among pine and cedar forests, the path passes through villages, stunning coastal landscapes, and the remains of ancient cities such as Pınara, Xanthos, Letoön, and Olympos. It is possible to walk even just a few sections of it. It’s certainly one of the most evocative ways to discover the magic of Turkey.

The national parks

Cappadocia, a must during your trip in Turkey

There is no shortage of natural parks in the country. One of the most famous is certainly the Göreme National Park, located in Cappadocia. Its unique rock formations and underground cities truly represent a unique landscape in the world. For those who love the sea, we recommend the Olympos National Park, on the Mediterranean coast, which offers white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and incredible fauna and flora.

There is Dublin with its pubs, there are castles that dot the entire territory. There are very high cliffs that leave you breathless, there is music, festivals, and the desire to have fun. Ireland is a multifaceted country and is also a perfect destination for a walking holiday.

For those traveling on foot, Ireland is a destination that offers authentic and magical experiences. You will be able to admire some of the most beautiful and uncontaminated parts of the country. You can choose from very different scenarios and landscapes, while discovering the true spirit of the island in every corner.

The itineraries and paths to be tackled while walking on the Irish island are truly numerous. A particularly interesting area, as well as easily accessible, is between the county of Galway and Clare. The Slieve Aughty region is a natural park characterized by endless forests, quiet country roads, river landscapes, and striking mountains. Here is Slieve Aughty Centre, an eco-resort surrounded by nature and the best starting point for a walking holiday in Ireland. The hosts will provide you with a map with 4 simple but captivating paths that will allow you to discover the surroundings of the accommodation. There is also an area dedicated to families. The Enchanted Forest is a small grove where children can rediscover the magic of nature.

Slieve Aughty Centre, the perfect starting point for your walking holiday in Ireland

From the eco-resort, it is also easy to reach other points of interest, such as the Connemara National Park. It’s a wild region steeped in legend, folklore, and is the perfect location for a walking holiday in Ireland. The Connemara is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Lough Corrib and offers incredible landscapes that change with every step. Rivers, lakes, rugged hills, sandy beaches, dramatic mountains, and cliffs will fill your eyes and heart with wild beauty.

We recommend at least these two of the many itineraries you can do in the National Park. The Upper Diamond Hill path, a panoramic walk that reaches the top from the Visitor Center, and the 6-kilometer path that from Inagh Valley allows you to reach the splendid Maumahog Lake. Truly indescribable panoramas await you at both arrival points!

From the Pacific coast to the Atlantic Ocean, a route through nature in Canada. Canada offers a wide range of proposals for those who wish to get to know its lands in a more sustainable way and get in touch with its natural beauties and biodiversity.

In fact, it has 37 national parks and 10 park reserves, protecting approximately 336,343 square kilometres of its land. If you want nature, this North American giant has to be on your agenda.

Here’s a look at some of the most spectacular destinations if you want to connect with nature in Canada.

Banff National Park

Located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Banff National Park is Canada’s oldest national park. It was founded in 1885 and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

It is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, with majestic mountains, crystal clear lakes, forests and a variety of wildlife. It covers more than 6,600 square kilometres and boasts major mountain peaks such as Mount Temple and Mount Victoria.

Popular activities in Banff National Park include hiking, wildlife viewing, camping, skiing and snowboarding. There are more than 1,600 kilometres of trails of varying levels of difficulty to explore.

The park’s lakes are also a major attraction for visitors, such as the famous Lake Louise and Lake Moraine, which are known for their crystal clear waters and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Other attractions include the Banff Gondola cable car, which offers panoramic views of the mountains, and the village of Banff, with its shops, restaurants and art galleries.

You can also visit the park’s Information Centre for more information on sites and activities.

Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park is located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 because of its unique geological landscape and rock formations.

The park offers a wide variety of activities for visitors. Some of the main rides and attractions include:

Hiking: There are more than 100 kilometres of trails winding through mountains, forests and lakes. Visitors can choose from a wide range of routes, from short, easy walks to multi-day hikes.

Wildlife viewing: This territory is home to a wide variety of animals, including moose, caribou, black bears, red foxes, eagles and hawks.

Kayaking and canoeing: this is one of the most recommended activities. In this park it is common to explore the coastline and lakes by kayak or canoe. The park’s coastline is breathtaking and offers excellent views of the mountains and wildlife.

Whale-watching: another exciting proposition in this park, especially in Bonne Bay. Humpback, minke and fin whales are common in the area.

Those wishing to try a more environmentally friendly form of accommodation have the option of camping in one of the three camping areas. There are also museums and visitor centres offering information on the history and geology of the region.

Bay of Fundy biosphere reserve

The Bay of Fundy Biosphere Reserve is a protected area located on the east coast of Canada, in the province of New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia.

The Bay of Fundy is known for having the largest tidal range in the world, which creates a unique and diverse ecosystem in the region.

This reserve covers a large area of land, including lowlands, coasts, cliffs, islands and rivers. It is designed to protect the region’s biodiversity and to promote the economic and social sustainability of local communities.

Activities in the Bay of Fundy Biosphere Reserve include whale watching, hiking at various levels.

One of the most popular activities in this reserve is bird watching. More than 300 species of birds live here, including some of the rarest in the world.

Prince Edward Island National Park

Prince Edward Island National Park is located in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. It was established in 1937 and is one of the smallest (but no less spectacular) in Canada, covering an area of 22.5 square kilometres.

Its area stretches along the north coast of the island and has a variety of natural habitats, including sandy beaches, dunes, cliffs, forests, grasslands and wetlands. It is located in a transitional region between the boreal forests of the north and the deciduous forests of the south, giving it a rich biodiversity.

The park is a popular destination for visitors looking to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, swimming, surfing, bird watching and wildlife viewing.

It is especially pleasant for cycling, with some 20 kilometres of paved multi-purpose cycling trails.

There are several hiking trails, including a route along the Gulf of St. Lawrence cliff route, which offers breathtaking views.

Jasper National Park

We finish again in the province of Alberta, with Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, with an area of more than 10,800 square kilometres. It was established in 1907.

The park has a wide variety of landscapes and ecosystems, including mountains, glaciers, lakes, rivers, forests and alpine meadows.

It is also home to a great diversity of wildlife, including bears, moose, caribou, coyotes, wolves, cougars and many other animals.

Some of the activities you can do in Jasper National Park include:

Hiking: There are a number of trails that run through the park, ranging from short walks to more challenging routes. Some of the most interesting routes are on Mount Edith Cavell.

Excursions: such as walking on the Athabasca Glacier, one of the largest and most accessible of the Rocky Mountain glaciers, can be reached via the Icefields Road, where visitors can walk on the ice on the glacier.

Canoeing and kayaking: Lake Maligne, for example, is one of the most photographed lakes in the world and is surrounded by mountains and forests. Canoeing, boating and hiking are available in the surrounding area.

In addition, as in other parks in Canada’s vast territory, visitors can see different species of animals in their natural habitat, go cycling, skiing, snowboarding or camping.

The breeze from the lake, and the olive trees under the sun: Malcesine awaits you in this enchanted setting. It’s one of the pearls of Lake Garda and the perfect destination for your next holiday of relaxation, sport, and sustainability.

Malcesine

We are located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, where the Veneto borders with Trentino. It is here that, suspended between the water of the lake and the mountain, the medieval village of Malcesine develops around the Scaliger Castle, the symbol of the Venetian town. Getting here means walking through the characteristic cobbled alleys and squares, passing through suggestive doors and archways, and discovering tiny, colorful shops, ateliers, and restaurants. The gaze flows between the picturesque views of the historic center to the rocky spur on which the Castle stands, from the small port and the beaches to the top of Mount Baldo. And this is how, in an instant, the irresistible charm of Malcesine conquers you.

What to do and see in Malcesine? Despite the village’s small size, there are countless activities to try and monuments to admire. There really is something for all tastes!
You certainly cannot miss Scaliger Castle. Now also a renowned location for weddings, it’s the seat of the Natural History Museum of Monte Baldo and Garda. Inside there is the former gunpowder magazine, dedicated to W. Goethe. The room preserves the drawings made by the poet on the occasion of his journey in Italy. After visiting the interior, you can climb the tower: a panoramic point that leaves you breathless!
Always in the historic center, you can also visit the Palazzo dei Capitani, the seat of the Scaligeri governors and, later, the Captain of the Lake. It was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries on top of ancient Roman buildings.

Just 4 kilometers from Malcesine’s center, the small village of Cassone overlooks the lake, in a truly picturesque atmosphere. But what makes Malcesine even more unique and special is the nature that surrounds it and which offers endless possibilities for outdoor experiences. A must for all travelers who pass through here is the cable car. In a few minutes, you will reach the 1800 meters of Monte Baldo, aboard rotating cabins that offer a 360-degree panorama. You can carry your bike with you, then go downhill, and follow the various high-altitude itineraries. Otherwise, you can venture into the various walking paths to discover the mountain. Mountain biking, trekking, but also water sports, and paragliding. What will you choose?

A resort surrounded by greenery

There is one accommodation that fits perfectly into the atmosphere and nature of Malcesine. It is Elle Ecoholiday, a refuge where you can feel safe, switch off and enjoy a reserved and environmentally conscious holiday. I definitely recommend:

We are located in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, in one of the most welcoming places in South Tyrol: this is where the Arosea Life Balance Hotel is located, hospitality in Val d’Ultimo that makes luxury, comfort, and sustainability its own founding elements.

The natural well-being of Arosea Life Balance Hotel

Immersed in breathtaking nature, the hotel is the perfect place for a regenerating holiday, where every moment is transformed into sensations of balance, inner peace, and harmony. As soon as you walk through the door, you understand that here wellbeing finds its maximum expression, always combined with respect for nature and sustainability. The main elements that give life to the rooms of Arosea Life Balance Hotel are pinewood, sheep’s wool, and slate stone; all natural materials that allow them to create design places that have positive effects on our daily lives.

Arosea Life Balance Hotel: eco-friendly hotel in Val d'Ultimo dedicated to wellness

Pinewood, for example, has an antibacterial effect that reduces the heart rate and ensures better rest. Slate stone, which makes the environment even more refined, protects against harmful radiation. Sheep’s wool, an indigenous material from the Val d’Ultimo, is a precious natural fiber that insulates, heats, and has a self-sanitizing function. Here living according to nature becomes synonymous with health, wellness, and regeneration. The same philosophy is then found in the naturally filtered swimming pool, the 700 m² natural lake, the wellness center, the rooms, and the cuisine. In the modern dining room, in the more traditional wooden stube, guests can in fact enjoy healthy recipes, prepared with organic and local ingredients.

Returning in the evening to the spaces of the exclusive Arosea Life Balance Hotel and waking up in the warmth of its rooms already means experiencing unforgettable moments, but another strong point of the accommodation is certainly its location. In fact, Val d’Ultimo is one of the most beautiful and fascinating destinations in all of South Tyrol: unspoiled wild nature awaits you here, with numerous stretches of water (the hotel itself is located on the shores of Lake Zoccolo) and infinite green spaces where you can indulge in excursions, via ferratas and walks.

The woods as far as the eye can see, the picturesque villages, the traditional huts, but also the proximity to Merano, the ruins of the Eschenlohe Castle, and the Church of Sant’Elena make this place truly surprising.

Wellness holiday in Val d’Ultimo: unmissable experiences

Wellness holiday in Val d'Ultimo: unmissable experiences at Arosea Life Balance Hotel

Arosea Life Balance Hotel pampers its guests with small and big attentions. For example, you can treat yourself to a sheep’s wool ritual, which envelops the body in natural warmth, that penetrates deep into the epidermal layers and thus releases all tension. You can try the hay bath or the different types of sauna and start the day with seasonal products and excellent organic bread from the buffet. Not far from the hotel, you cannot miss the natural baths of Lad and Oltretorrente.

You want to experience all the wonders of the mountain but you don’t like skiing or maybe you want to try new and different experiences. The More Than Just Skiing program is designed just for you and for anyone who wants to try new things and emotions among the mountain tops!

Started a few days ago, this series of events will animate the heart of the Dolomites until March 31st, offering a wide range of activities in close contact with the magical nature of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Park and the wonder of the Alpine Pearl of San Martino di Castrozza, Passo Rolle, Primiero and Vanoi.

More Than Just Skiing: explore the mountain

The weekly program of More Than Just Skiing is full of outdoor experiences that will allow you to discover the most beautiful places in the area and their flavors and traditions. Guided walks, snowshoe itineraries, tastings of typical local products, fascinating explorations, and evocative aperitifs on a snowmobile are just some of the unmissable experiences you can enjoy during these winter months.

The Alpine Guides are also available for snow safety courses. You will be able to learn the basics of snow cover, understand how to move in the mountains, and discover the main rescue techniques in the event of an avalanche.

More Than Just Skiing also pays special attention to families and children. They indeed dedicated to them the Dolomiti Family Adventures catalog. Snow trekking with llamas, snacks in the malga, and afternoons in the stable will make all the children (and not only them) ecstatic. Do not miss the descents with bobsleds and sleds at the Nasse Park and the ice skating both in San Martino di Castrozza and in Primiero.

There are also many appointments with local gastronomy. You can visit the award-winning BioNoc craft brewery in Mezzano or learn how to prepare some typical dishes such as canederli, spaetzle, and strudel.

And if you’re looking for strong emotions and adrenalinepumping experiences, you can’t help but try climbing on a snowcat, paragliding over the incredible snowy landscapes, or spending a day with ice-climbing professionals.
