A trip between the woods of Monti Li Foj to get back in contact with nature and discover the rich history of Basilicata

It is a surprising and memorable, as well as valuable experience, to be lost in the woods any time. These are the words Henry David Thoreau uses to describe the beneficial effect of nature and woods on people. Do you want to feel this kind of emotions? The mountains known as Li Foj, in the heart of the Lucan Apennines, and their beautiful natural landscapes are the perfect place for you!

Immersed in the woods, with the leaves rustling under our feet, we felt as if the trees were embracing us. The air was imbued with a scent of musk and the bright pink cyclamen lighted our way.

Read on and join us in this fascinating walking route between the woods of this area of Basilicata. We were lucky enough to explore them with the expert guide Nicola Masi during our unforgettable blog-tour in Basilicata. The tour was organized by Marmo Melandro Viaggi in collaboration with Viaggi del Milione.

Monti Li Foj

The Li Foj mountains are situated about 1355 metres above sea level. They symbolically divide the two seas of Basilicata: Tyrrhenian and Ionian. In this extensive mountain chain you can find cultivated areas, meadows and very high beech woods which offer the chance to walk and contemplate nature. Moreover, there are lakes and wide lawn areas which are the perfect spot for picnics.

Basilicata was once a huge and dense wood, which probably gave the Italian region its name. As a matter of fact, ‘Lucania’ may derive from the Latin “lucus”, which means either ‘sacred wood’ or ‘clearing encompassed by trees’.

Our guide told us that the name Monti ‘Li Foj’ is strictly linked to the destination of use of such woods. In fact, people used to chop wood and use it for their domestic fireplace (focolare domestico, or fuochi di casa).

Monti Li Foj are considered Sites of Community Importance (SCI) since 2006. This measure guarantees the safeguard of both majestic beech, silver firs and oak trees and the multitude of animals that live in these woods. Eagle-owls, woodpeckers, foxes, squirrels, wild boars, wolves and hawks are all great examples. These mountains are definitely rich in biodiversity, and therefore need protection.

And there’s more. Monti Li Foj house some hidden gems which are ready to be discovered through gentle strolls between the trees and the paths which cover the plateau.

Walking Through Beech Woods Until The Plain Of Nevena

Plain of Nevena, 1165 metres above sea level

The walking route between the beech woods until the plain of Nevena is one of the most suggestive paths. The route begins at approximately a thousand metres of altitude, around 8 km from Picerno. You can easily get there on foot or by car. From here you go to Fonte del Faggio, and you reach the crest line near Serra La Croce (1310 metres above sea level). The view on the surrounding mountains and the valley of Marmo Platano is breathtaking.

When you reach the maximum altitude (1342 metres), you go down towards the plain of Nevena, a wide basin surrounded by high beech woods.

The plain of Nevena is a suggestive and unique place, characterized by impermeable soil devoid of trees. This makes it the perfect natural arena to listen to open-air concerts. As a matter of fact, every summer the magic location comes alive with music events like “Fuori piano”, an open-air piano concert. All in all, this huge lawn is the ideal place to organize picnics, outdoor games and barbecues throughout the year.

The Beech Woods And The Bourbon Stumps

Walking through the beech woods that surround the plain of Nevena you can notice the trees’ ancient stumps rising up to approximately two metres from the ground. As a result, such trees become magical figures that liven up the woods with their presence.

Beech woods' stumps

These secular stumps testify the fact that in the Bourbon period people used to chop the coppice two metres from the ground. This measure prevented the shoots at the base of the plant to be eaten by the animals living in the woods.

The mosses and lichens at the base of the trees are a consequence of the climate of the place. In fact, the humidity mainly comes from “phantom rain”, which are low clouds of steam. The other main trees that live together with the beech tree are the greater holly, the yew tree and other evergreen plants.

Colourful wild cyclamen sparkle between the trees and on the green mosses that cover the stumps. These beautiful flowers are also known as “pan porcini”, as wild boars tend to be greedy for their bulbs.

The Lake Scuro

From the plain of Nevena, we kept walking down the beech woods and we reached the lake Scuro. The Lago Scuro (literally, “dark lake”) is a big naturally-derived body of water, formed by the landslides.

Lake Scuro

Its shape resembles a heart which mirrors both the sky and the surrounding green woods. The lake is located at 1100 metres above sea level. Here, the splendour and unspoilt beauty of the nature of Basilicata left us speechless.

Exploring the woods of Monti Li Foj is a unique experience which allows you to get in contact with nature and discover the great history of the places visited. An unforgettable experience that feeds both body and soul and that will allow you to feel a deep connection with the beauty of our Earth.

Discover the most beautiful corners of the Alps, those that can only be reached on foot: views that only people who are willing to make an effort can admire. Experience the excitement of reaching the top of a peak, of breathing light and fresh air, of seeing chamois running through the meadows … Put on comfortable shoes and prepare the backpack: here are five recommended walking routes across the Alpine Pearls.

1.Tremis di Cermignon – France

This Pearl, at the border with Val di Susa is surrounded by the majestic mountain peaks of the Vanoise National Park with its glaciers. You can explore intact nature, walking along the approximately 350km of paths through the wilderness Maurienne Vanoise. An unforgettable round-trip through the entire region is the Grand Tour de Haute Maurienne. The route is divided into ten stages, each lasting from 4 to 8 hours walking, crossing the most beautiful corners, including alpine huts, clear pools and stone villages. Depending on your freetime (…and your fitness!), you can decide whether to follow it enterely or only along some of the stages.

2. Val di Funes – Italy

Here we are, in South Tyrol, in the heart of Puez-Odle National Park, surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Dolomites standing inbetween candid blue skies and fresh green lawns. Trekking routes through the valley are really a lot and of course, after the effort you can enjoy excellent traditional dishes in cozy alpine huts! I suggest an original idea if you are on vacation with your children. The Mineral Museum of Tiso has created some walking paths to explore the geological and botanical characteristic of the territory. One of these is the circular path to the pond called “Mesner Lake”. It starts from the central square of the village of Tiso, heading north, toward a small lake. A comfortable path, that can be easily followed by strollers and wheelchairs, goes around the pond. There are also many benches from which you can enjoy the sun, watching at dragonflies dancing and listening to the concert of frogs, while your children are playing all around. Some fragments of rocks tell the geological history of the area. You can decide to go back passing through the “Kårrner Waldele” playground and the hill of “Schelmbühl”.

3. Mallnitz – Austria

Take a walk through Hohe Tauern National Park, a real paradise for trekking lovers, with its three valleys, crossed by 200km of trails and walking paths even at high altitude. An interesting path is the “Roman trail”. It starts from Mallnitz and reaches Sportgastein following an ancient Roman road. Along the way you will also find references to the history of the place. Merge yourself with the nature of the Hohe Tauern and discover the consequences of climate change on the territory, including rocky moraines of ancient glaciers.

4. Arosa – Swiss

chripell via Flickr

A walking holiday in Arosa is ideal for those seeking tranquility. The particular position differentiates this Swiss Pearl from other hiking areas in the surroundings. Between the village of Arosa and Weißhorn meet unique limestone cliffs. This unusual combination is ideal for life of over 900 species of flowers, ferns, mosses and mushrooms. 200 km of walking and hiking trails are waiting for you to enjoy the unique spectacle of nature. Get an hiking map and start your journey through beautiful forests, with crystal clear alpine lakes or pointing up into the peaks of 3000 meters. Arosa expect you with hiking tours for all tastes!

5. Ceresole Reale – Italy

Associazione Amici del Gran Paradiso laghetto

Let us move to Piedmont, in the Gran Paradiso National Park, between glaciers, cliffs and mountain peaks. Start your walk from Ceresole and hike through the park: this is one of the stages of the Grand Tour of Piedmont, an hiking trail through the Alps, from the Tanaro Valley to Lake Maggiore! Here is an interesting route from Ceresole (1584m), to Lake Dres (2087m) in 3 hours, following an easy path! The trail starts from the paved road along the south side of Lake Ceresole, in near of Villa Poma. The wide path, after about ten minutes forks, from one side to the Passo della Crocetta, the other towards Lake Dres and Refuge Leonesi. After passing the main stream, the trail winds within one of the most interesting coniferous forests of the Park, including larches, firs and stone pine. It continues in a picturesque expanse of pastures in the presence of the Eastern Levanna and you will reach the glacial basin filled by the lake, near which you can spot the common frog, the species that lays its eggs in mountain lakes above 2500 m quote!

Transport is undoubtedly one of the most important bets, if not the most important, for mountain environments. Primary source of greenhouse gas emissions, transport causes air and noise pollution, causing serious risks for biodiversity and for the habitats of numerous animal species, as well as land erosion and global warming. We hear more and more about the fact that mountain is a fragile environment. For this reason it is necessary to be more aware of road traffic’s ecological impact and reverse the trend. Alpine Pearls began to act when climbate change was not yet so visible; and they have taken a path that everyone should follow: that of sustainable mobility.

The offer of Alpine Pearls

Car-free mountain holiday thanks to sustainable mobility

However, you’ll find beauty, we guarantee. But above all, what awaits you is a rich and efficient offer of sustainable mobility.

Have you ever heard about the chain of the Maddalene, solitary mountains of Trentino, in the Non-Valley (Italian Alps)? It is a place to discover,  following forest roads and paths on foot: a real paradise for hikers!

The landscapes that you can enjoy from the peaks of the Maddalene are truly amazing: close to the border with the Val d’Ultimo and South Tyrol, with its high snowy peaks that stand out on the horizon, but not far from the Brenta Dolomites group, in the south, as well as from the Catinaccio group, with the unmistakable profile of the Scillar visible eastwards.

There are so many ponds that offer hospitality to walkers with their typical dishes, made with simple but genuine products, including very good mountain cheeses. The cows enjoy the freshness of the surrounding clearings. The Maddalenes are truly a place to discover: follow me on this recommended itinerary that heads to the summit of Monte Luco!

Starting Point: Palade Pass

Duration: 2-3 hours

Difference in altitude: 916m

Difficulty: medium, alpine trail – forest road

Leave the car at Palade Pass (it is already in South Tyrol. For those coming from Trento, drive towards the entire Val di Non in the direction of Fondo) and take path 133 towards Lake Monte Luco, ignoring the indication for the mountain hut. The path begins steeply in the woods and emerge above, where the clearings begin. From here you can see the summit of Monte Luco (2434m).

Keep following the same path until you reach the fascinating Monte Luco Lake, populated in the summer by girini and frogs. From here, before climbing the highest peak, you can climb the summit of Piccolo Luco (2297m), going up and down from the same trail.

The path to Mount Luco grows between shrubs and rocks to reach a slope, from where you can take the last ramp leading to the peak cross. Take a moment to rest and admire the landscape! From here, follow the crest on the opposite slope that goes back to the lake (path No. 8A). To close the ring-tour with a tasty break in the mountain hut, follow path n.10 towards Laugenalm (Malga M. Luco). From here the forest road (n.10) will take you back to the starting point.

Where to stay

20170803_132923

The Maddalene chain is easily accessible from Trento or the Val di Non, as well as from the Val d’Ultimo in South Tyrol, in particular from the village of San Pancrazio, which is not far from the Palade Pass. Val di Non is really a beautiful valley to visit, with its villages and castles: it is worth staying here for a few days!

We are in the north-east of Istria, in those places that once were the summer destination of the Austro-Hungarian nobility. We are immersed in the scents of the laurel, from which Lovran takes its name. The town raise at the foot of Mount Učka; around us beautiful villas and in front of a suggestive promenade. It almost seems to be in a postcard from another time.

What to do and see in Lovran

Not far from the most famous and lively Opatija, this small pearl of Istria is perfect for those who want to regenerate with an idyllic holiday. We find ourselves in a place that seems to invite us to stop and slow down. Lovran welcomes us with its typically medieval historic center. Here we can visit the Romanesque church of Saint George, dating back to the 12th century, the small Gothic church of the Holy Trinity and the medieval tower, which today houses the works of numerous painters. But what conquers us the most is the seafront, which connects Lovran with all the towns of the Riviera. Walking here is truly a suggestive and unmissable experience.

You can visit also the wonderful Lovran’s surroundings. Those who love the sea can venture out on boat rides and snorkeling, while those who love walking in mountain landscapes can explore Mount Učka, which with its 1396 meters of altitude is the highest peak in the region. From up there, the view is breathtaking.

Between luxury and sustainability, a stay in a historic villa

Deluxe Beachfront Apartment Klara

In Lovran you can stay in a beautiful historic villa facing the sea. Renovated in 2018 into a green building, the apartment offers everything you need for a carefree holiday. The architecture of the villa, the city center within walking distance and the small private beach right in front of the entrance make this accommodation the ideal place to experience the unique atmosphere of Lovran.

We are only an hour from Turin, but we find ourselves in a wild environment where nature is the absolute protagonist. Dense woods teeming with life, mountains reaching 3000 meters and streams create landscapes of unique and indescribable beauty.

Vegan stay immersed in the woods of Val Pellice

Casa Prayer, vegan stay in Val Pellice

To experience Val Pellice in an authentic way, we choose to stay in a charming accommodation, just like the area in which it is located. It is Casa Prayer, a suggestive stone farmhouse in the woods. We had interviewed the owners, Luca and Paola, and we couldn’t wait to discover their vegan lifestyle and hospitality first hand. We are not disappointed. Here we find a harmonious and natural place, made up of little things. We let ourselves be carried away by slow rhythms, we get excited looking at the stars. We have simple rooms where nothing is missing, and many spaces to explore in which to seclude or enjoy each others. Let’s enjoy the herb garden, the courtyard with solarium, the hammocks in the birch forest. We also can bake and cook in the wood oven. We find ourselves, we reconnect with nature.

Staying at Casa Prayer we rediscover the pleasure of slowing down, but in Val Pellice there is so much to do and discover. This area is in fact a real paradise for those who love outdoor activities. Despite its small size, 60 trekking routes, 40 MTB routes, 30 ski mountaineering routes, 30 mountaineering climbs, 38 cliffs and also 15 ice falls await us. Thanks to the variety of environments and altitudes, there are itineraries suitable for everyone. We first try our hand at the most classic trekking in the area. We leave from Villanova takes us to the Conca del Pra, passing through forests, pastures and waterfalls.

But here in Val Pellice we can also discover Waldensian history by visiting the “Gheisa ‘dla Tana” cave where once they practice the cult while escaping persecution. Then we can take a bath in the natural pools that here they call Trumpi. Finally we visit the Urania Astronomical Observatory; and we also have the opportunity to participate in a course of Matteo Salusso’s weaving school.

The flavors of the valley

A day of trekking in Val Pellice has only one possible worthy conclusion: tasting the best of the local food. We are talking about the Seirass del Fen, ricotta aged in hay.

Hundreds of paths, forest roads, mule tracks, via ferratas allow us to enter the woods, meadows and rocky mountains of Belluno Dolomites National Park. Established in 1990 and Unesco heritage since 2009, the Park, still little known today, reserves shows of great beauty every day.

Belluno Dolomites National Park extends for more than 31 thousand hectares in the southernmost part of Dolomites, within the province of Belluno. What strikes first of all is the great variety of environments: from broad-leaved woods to coniferous forests, from high-altitude shrubs to grasslands, in a territory that develops from 400 to 2500 meters above sea level. It is therefore not surprising that there is so much to do and see inside the park.

A gateway is represented by Lake Mis. Artificial, it takes its name from the river that forms it and fascinates for the perfect combination of colors and for how Monti del Sole are reflected in its water. From here it is then easy to reach the Cadini del Brenton, an enchanting set of small waterfalls that connect a series of caves. Do not miss the Bus del Buson, a suggestive canyon with looming rock walls. There is also the wonderful Cajada forest, also known as the “Bosco della Serenissima”.

Nature offers an incredible spectacle every step you take, leaving you speechless in front of an uncontaminated beauty. But the Belluno Dolomites National Park also preserves fascinating villages, real artistic and historical jewels and enchanting towns. How not to visit Belluno, an enchanting Alpine city with beautiful squares and fascinating buildings? Feltre awaits you with its museums, its theater and its unique atmosphere. Also worth seeing at any cost is the Certosa di Vedana, a beautiful monastic complex, and the Mines of Valle Imperina, an ancient mining center that marked the history of these places.

The great variety of environments allows the Park to host a rich fauna. 115 species of birds, 3,000 chamois and more than 2,000 roe deer, 100 species of butterflies make these places even more fascinating.

One of the main scientific reasons for the birth of the Belluno Dolomites National Park is the great wealth and rarity of its flora. Since 1700, important botanists from all over the world went to these places to discover rare and native species. Rhododendrons, thistles, edelweiss and 1000 other wonderful species await you.

The Park is crossed by the Alte Vie delle Dolomiti n. 1 and n. 2, a network of over 200 kilometers of CAI trails and numerous other routes. Starting from Val Canzoi you can reach the Feltre bivouac, on the tracks of the chamois and through breathtaking landscapes. The via ferratas of the Schiara are wonderful, but very demanding. For the less experienced, on the other hand, I recommend the C.A.I. No. 523.

What to do and see in Comano Terme

Spending a holiday in Comano Terme, halfway between Trento and Riva del Garda, means regenerating yourself in contact with nature. Here you can discover slow rhythms, filling your eyes with wonder. The town houses twenty villages, each of which has something to tell. Ponte Arche is the capital and, with its 750 inhabitants, the most inhabited one. To fall in love with these places it would be enough just to walk through the streets and paths, but you cannot miss Casa Mattei, what remains of the Castel Restor and the view it offers, and also the near archaeological area of San Martino.

The houses, the inhabitants of the place tell the rural soul of these places, but they are not the only attraction. In fact, nature is the real protagonist. A few steps from Comano you must go to Forra del Limarò, a canyon carved into the rock by Sarca river that offers suggestive landscapes. You cannot miss a visit to the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, which with its countless paths offers you the opportunity to discover all the wonder of these places.

It is always nature that gives us what most of all has made Comano Terme famous: its water. It comes out at a temperature of 27° and is unique in the world due to its characteristics. This water is mainly used for skin treatment in both adults and children. In the thermal centre you can naturally treat psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema and allergies.

One of the oldest towns in Val di Non and an unmissable destination for lovers of trekking and mountain biking: Tuenno is an enchanting place, capable of harmoniously combining rural traditions with modernity.

We are located at 629 meters above sea level, under the wooded slopes of the Brenta Group, in an area whose main vocation is undoubtedly the cultivation of apples. In a landscape characterized by the rows of these trees rises Tuenno, a village of prehistoric origin today made of typical low houses, tech fruit warehouses, rustic buildings, bread ovens and elegant villas.

What to do and see in Tuenno

In Tuenno you will have the opportunity to experience an exciting active holiday by practicing numerous outdoor sports. If you love trekking or cycling with your mountain bike, here you’ll have endless options. In fact, you can explore the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, discover the suggestive trails through the typical canyons of Val di Non. You can also try your hand at the Dolomiti Brenta Bike path.

In summer, water sports enthusiasts can then try windsurfing and rafting in Noce stream and in Lake Santa Cristina. In winter, you can also try the downhill slopes or go hiking with snowshoes. Certainly, during your holiday in Tuenno, you cannot miss a visit to Lake Tovel. It’s a jewel of the valley, also famous for the intense red color that the water once assumed between July and September. Watching the mountains reflected in the crystal clear water is truly an enchanting sight.

In Tuenno, as in the whole Adamello Brenta Park, it is nature that reigns supreme, however there is no lack of cultural attractions. For example, we can visit the fifteenth-century church dedicated to Sant’Emerenziana or reach the nearby Valer Castle.

Potatoes Tortel, canederli with Mortandela, apples in all ways and forms and Kaiserschmarren: your holiday in Tuenno must pass also through the typical flavors of the Val di Non. You will be delighted with every bite!

Where to sleep eco-friendly

For your eco-sustainable stay in Tuenno you can choose between the Agritur Leita, a farmhouse surrounded by greenery with a large garden and also a wellness area, and the Hotel Tuenno which offers services designed for cyclists. Both of accommodations use green energy and respect the environment. Which one will you choose?
