Today we reach the beautiful Turkey, which is a natural bridge between East and West and has a long history, from the Hittites to the Ottomans. We go up to the south-west of the country, where incredible and pristine beaches, lively towns and impressive monuments await us.

Ready? We leave together for an unforgettable travel in Turkey, between seaside resorts where in summer tourists flock, rural locations where you can enjoy nature and authenticity, and amazing food everywhere you turn. Our destination is Kaya Valley and the nearby coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera.

To get there, the easiest way is certainly to arrive at Dalaman airport, not far from the villages of the area and the sea. Things to do, live and experience are many and it is not easy to tell about them: walking among the scents and colors of the bazaars, being amazed by the view of the islands of Fethiye, seeing the ghost town of Kayaköy, walking in nature that hides ancient tombs, dive into the blue sea. This area of Turkey is sure to get exciting, but let’s go with order and discover some of the things not to be missed.

The villages, the authentic Turkey

Here you can feel the essence of local life of these areas; they are small villages surrounded by mountains and greenery where life proceeds at a slow pace, in a relaxed atmosphere. But in Kaya, Hisaronu, and in the other towns there is still a large number of restaurants and bars, where you can taste local delicacies and watch the world goes by.

Kaya's bar, Turkey Hisaronu, Turkey's village

The beaches, pristine blue

Again, the choices are many, and it depends on personal taste: those who prefer more secluded beaches will find heaven in Gemiler, a set of marvelous bays and coves where there are also interesting archaeological finds; those who enjoy more the beach life, will choose the Fethiye Bay from which you also admire twelve beautiful islands. But how not to mention the Patara beach, south of Fethiye, with its 18 kilometers of beach and the chance to see loggerhead turtles, and of course the most photographed beach in Turkey, the one of Oludeniz, the Blue Lagoon.

Oludeniz, Turkey Patara beach, one of the most beautiful of Turkey

Fethiye, tourism, and archaeological sites

With its 147,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the area. It is located in the ancient Telmessos and is one of the most popular tourist centers in Turkey. My advice is to spend a day or two to visit the city, but never in August when tourists rush here. Although far from the authenticity of the inland villages, the city offers precious glimpses. Among the many restaurants and clubs, there is a lively and wonderful weekly market that retains its turkish character. Besides the aforementioned beaches and islands, Fethiye offers historical evidence that worth visiting, from the Telmessos rock tombs, the theater and the remains of the fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes.

The Lycian Way

One of the best ways to discover the area is walking along this trek, one of the most popular in the world. It is 540 km route, very challenging in some points, that goes from the sea to the mountain, representing a portal to the past. In the journey from Oludeniz to Antalya there are many ancient buildings, rock Tombs, and archaeological ruins dating back to the period of the Lycian people.

Where to stay in this unspoiled corner of Turkey

In the village of Kaya, not far from Fethiye and the Blue Lagoon, you can stay in a beautiful eco-sustainable accommodation. The Fig Garden offers travelers 2 beautiful and rustic cottages surrounded by a garden of fruit trees. You will be welcomed with a basket of local products and this is the perfect place for spending some relaxing days, without any stress. The cottages, which are equipped with solar panels and low-energy light bulbs, can be rented together or separately. Both have beautiful private terraces with a barbecue and they share a pool.

Crystal-clear water and wild promontories overlooking the sea: Southern Albania offers true natural gems, making it the perfect destination for sea and snorkeling enthusiasts. This region is becoming more and more popular, so we recommend visiting during the quieter periods. June and September is ideal, avoiding the peak of mass tourism. Read on to discover the 5 most beautiful beaches in Southern Albania!

1. Pulebharda Beach, among breathtaking seabed and white pebbles

Situated between Ksamil and Saranda, Pulebharda Beach is a genuine natural paradise. The beach is accessible by car, but it’s recommended to take the bus and continue on foot along a 20-minute trail, surrounded by small forests and lulled by the sounds of nature. The beach consists of pure white pebbles, and the seafloor features some rocky outcrops, providing an ideal habitat for various fish species, sea urchins, and mollusks. This is the perfect spot for those who enjoy snorkeling and swimming in crystal-clear waters!

2. Gjipe Beach: Dive into Wild Southern Albania

Not far from the renowned Dhermi Beach, Gjipe Beach offers visitors a pristine sea surrounded by the wildest nature. This place is known for its challenging accessibility, but this is precisely what makes it breathtaking. You can reach the bay by taking a boat or a kayak from Jala Beach, a few kilometers away. Alternatively, if you enjoy hiking, you can take a simpler path of about 30 minutes or embark on a more adventurous journey, trekking through rugged forests and crossing the Gjipe Canyon.

3. Pasqyra Beach, Better Known as the “Mirror Beach”

Pasqyra Beach is just 3 km from Pulebharda Beach and is one of the most popular beaches in Southern Albania. It’s quite easy to see why: soft sand, a stunning cliff overlooking the sea, and crystal-clear, iridescent water have earned the name “Mirror Beach”. As a well-known beach, it is usually quite crowded, so we recommend visiting early in the morning to enjoy the sunrise spectacle and a few hours of quite sea time.

4. The Wonderful Krorez Beach: Between Boats and Turquoise Waters

Krorez Beach is located in the Lukova area. It will immediately captivate you with its transparent turquoise water: so clear that you can see pebbles on the seabed even several meters from the shore. The beach quickly deepens, making it ideal for taking a direct plunge into the sea. What sets it apart from other beaches is that it’s accessible only by boat, making it a hidden paradise that’s much less crowded than other beaches in the area.

5. The Island of Tongo in Ksamil

Being very close to the Ksamil Peninsula, the Island of Tongo is a breathtaking destination for a boat trip and a day of relaxation. Its soft sand makes it suitable for families too. The island boasts rich flora and underwater life waiting to be explored with a mask and snorkel!

trail along the Basque coast

The long and rugged Basque coast offers countless opportunities for surfing or visiting picturesque fishing villages. It also allows you to explore beautiful green routes between the majestic hills and rocks, and the blue of the Cantabrian Sea. If you are a fan of slow travel, whether on foot or by bicycle, here are 3 beautiful itineraries along the Basque coast that you shouldn’t miss!

The coast of Euskal Herria or Basque Country

Euskal Herria, or the Basque Country, is a charming and diverse territory. The landscape ranges from the contemporary architecture of Bilbao to the beauty of San Sebastian, from the golden beaches of Hendaye to the elegance of Biarritz. In particular, this region hides a green rural paradise, overlooking the ocean, which you can explore on foot.

Comprising the four Spanish provinces of Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Alava, and Navarra, as well as the three French provinces of Labourd, Basse-Navarre, and Soule. This this territory forms what the Basques call “Ipparalde,” which means “lands of the north”. Its French counterpart, “Pays Basque”, has gained administrative significance only in recent years.

This corner of the Basque coast is still relatively undiscovered by tourists and can be enjoyed slowly along beautiful green routes.

When to Visit the Basque Coast

Climate is certainly a factor to consider when deciding the best time for your trip. Spring brings the blooming of nature while summer is the warmest period. Autumn offers unforgettable colours in the vast forests of the region and more frequent sunshine than in summer. July and August are the busiest periods and are best avoided.

3 Green Itineraries Not to Miss on the Basque Coast

1. The Camino del Norte

Camino del Norte

The most fascinating green itinerary in terms of landscape is the Camino del Norte, along the northern Basque coast of Spain. It starts in Irun and passes through San Sebastian, Zaraust, Deba, Guernica, Bilbao, and Portugalete before entering Cantabria. This route retraces the path used by pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela to reach the saint’s tomb. In fact, it was easy for ships coming from Northern Europe to dock in the ports of northern Spain and walk along this route. It unfolded entirely in territories controlled by Christian kings and princes. During this time other parts of Spain were occupied by the Moors at the time.

One of the most picturesque stretches of the Camino del Norte is the one that goes from Zumaia to Deba. Here is where we can enter the Geoparque de la Costa Vasca (the Geopark of the Basque Coast). At first glance, it may appear as a beautiful, but typical route. It is characterised by the thousands of shades of green that extend to the Cantabrian Sea.

“Flysch” phenomenon

The rote’s uniqueness lies in its geological formation. The different layers of rock, formed by sediments over millions of years. Instead of horizontally, they are vertically oriented due to the collision of the Pyrenean tectonic plates. They are exposed thanks to the erosive action of the sea.

Flysch geological formation

“Flysch” is the name of this interesting phenomenon. Thanks to it, there’s no need for excavation to gather geological information about what happened in different eras. For example, a thin layer of black color testifies to the impact of an asteroid on our planet. Another layer reveals the causes of the disappearance of dinosaurs.

The 13 km of the Basque Coast included in the Geopark can be explored with hikes, boat rides, or horseback riding. Besides the Flysch phenomenon, you can admire natural beauty and charming rural areas with grazing animals along the road.

We follow the “Ruta del flysch” stage from Zumaia to Deba. It’s about 14 km long and takes approximately 4 hours to walk. Also, this route coincides with the famous “Camino de Santiago” in the “Camino del Norte” variant. It offers enchanting views of the sea and hills, with various shades of green gently intertwining among the large flysch rocks. Above all, the path climbs in elevation, providing breathtaking panoramas from the heights of small villages and the coast. Upon arrival at small beaches or rocky outcrops, they offer the opportunity of a refreshing swim in the sea.

2. The Sentier du Littoral from Hendaye to Bidart

This path, between land and sea, winds from Bidart to Hendaye and can even continue to Bilbao following the Camino del Norte. The land of Labourd is often overlooked by tourists who crowd Biarritz and Bayonne. By this they are missing out on this rural paradise with breathtaking landscapes and idyllic villages.

Domaine d'Abbadia

One of the most picturesque stretches of the Sentier du Littoral is between Hendaye and Domaine d’Abbadia, that runs along a green hill overlooking the sea. The Pyrenees and the ocean have shaped this piece of land over millennia, where the Flysch phenomenon is also visible.

Domaine d’Abbadia

You enter a rural paradise, surrounded by crops, fruit trees, and old farmhouses that now serve the natural park. Along the trails, you’ll reach the Chateau-Observatory Abbadia, a palace built in the second half of the nineteenth century.

On the outside, the neo-Gothic building resembles a medieval castle. Inside you can discover the eclectic personality of the owner, Antoine d’Abbadie. He deeply connected to his Basque origins but also as a great traveler. He installed an astronomical observatory and numerous scientists used it until the 1970s.

The 25 km of green itinerary that winds through the Domaine d’Abbadia is within a protected area overlooking the sea, accessible only on foot, and where dogs are not allowed. The natural area has 7 gates and 6 information points. Here you can study about the flora and fauna, history, and geology of the place and starts from Hendaye. Later it crosses the municipalities of Urrugne, Ciboure, Saint Jean de Luz, Guéthary to reach Bidart.

3. The Border Between France and Spain by Bicycle

Bike route from Hendaye on the French Basque coast to Irun and Hondarribia in the Spanish Basque countries
Bike route from Hendaye on the French Basque coast to Irun and Hondarribia in the Spanish Basque countries

Above all, along the Basque Coast, you’ll find beautiful cycling paths. Among the various possibilities, we recommend the one that crosses the border between France and Spain.

Undoubtedly the bicycle route from Hendaye to Irun represents a fascinating cycling adventure along the beautiful Basque coast. Pedaling along this scenic route, the view of the ocean on one side, and the majesty of the hills on the other captivates you. Well-maintained trails and bike paths offer an easy route, allowing cyclists to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Basque region effortlessly.

Starting from Hendaye is the last French town on the coast before entering Spain. You can cycle onward on the 3 km bike path along the golden beach and continue for about 10 km to the Spanish town of Irun. The way follow the banks of the Bidasoa River that divides the two countries.

Irun

Another very suggested option for crossing the border between France and Spain is by sea. A ferry connects the shores of Hendaye’s port to the Spanish town of Irun approximately every twenty minutes.

As the blue waters of the Bay of Biscay gently embrace the boat, the natural beauty of the Basque Coast surrounds you. In addition, the huge cliffs, golden beaches, and picturesque villages along the coast create a breathtaking scenery.

Boat connection from Hendaye to Irun-Hondarriba, images of the ancient center of Iruna and the medieval walls

Upon arriving in Irun, you will dive in a welcoming and authentic local atmosphere. Indeed, this charming Basque city offers a unique blend of culture, history, and tradition.

Furthermore, the cobblestone streets, lively squares, and colourful buildings create a captivating environment for visitors. As you explore Irun, you can discover the region’s cultural heritage through its culinary traditions.

Among the most famous specialities is “pintxos”. It is a variety of snacks that they serve in local bars, offering amazing flavours with ingredients like fresh fish, exquisite cheeses, olives, spicy peppers, and seasonal products. “Bacalao a la vizcaína”, a dish made with cod prepared with a sauce of red peppers and tomatoes. It is an icon of Basque cuisine, as well as “txuletón”, a succulent grilled beef steak.

In conclusion, the best way to discover the breathtaking landscapes of the Basque Coast is slowly, on foot, by boat, or by bicycle. Each of the three green routes we have described offers an authentic and engaging experience.

From walks along the Camino del Norte and the Sentier du Littoral to bike and boat routes along the Spain-France border, to exploring picturesque towns and local culinary delights, these itineraries allow you to embrace the true essence of the Basque Coast!

Umbria is particularly rich in natural assets, including both popular attractions (like the Marmore falls) and hidden gems to discover. That is the case of the Sources of Clitunno, in Italian Fonti del Clitunno, which are beautiful springs located within a natural park in the lovely town of Campello sul Clitunno, nestled between Spoleto and Foligno. If you’re planning to go there for your next day trip, keep reading to find out more.

The Natural Park Of The Sources Of Clitunno

The park, which covers approximately 10.000 square metres, includes the sources of the river Clitunno, a tributary of Topino. By gushing from the springs, the water creates a wonderful crystal-clear body of water, which is the right place to house several animal and plant species.

Along the way you can admire the magnificence of the willow trees, but also the elegance of the swans, herons, and coots. You can also find ducks, gees, and other aquatic animals.

Other than being a real gem of biodiversity, the Sources of Clitunno are a true idyllic place, whose view has enchanted and inspired poets of the stature of Virgil, Pliny the Younger, Carducci, and Lord Byron. Specifically, the latter provides us with a wonderful description of the water of the river in the fourth book of “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage”.

The Temple Of Clitunno

Situated about one kilometer from the Sources of Clitunno, the temple of Clitunno is in all likelihood un a Paleochristian place of worship that dates back to the 4th or 5th century. However, its shape, which resembles a Corinthian temple, has raised some doubts about its origin. As a matter of fact, some historians believe that it is actually a Roman temple, while others consider that it belongs to the Lombard era.

Despite the mystery associated with its origin, the temple of Clitunno is definitely a must-see for park visitors, who appreciate its lovely appearance and the sculptures and inscriptions that can be found inside.

Allow yourself to be charmed by the magic of the Sources of Clitunno and the close temple: discover a little-known area of Umbria that will definitely be able to amaze you!

Purposeful travel piques the interest of today’s adventurers who aim to combine exploration with a heightened sense of awareness. Going beyond the tourist traps, nature-focused stays and eco adventures offer an alternative route to visit a destination and connect deeply with its environment.

Whether you’re an eco-conscious traveller, a thrill seeker, or just curious about the world, keep reading. There’s much to consider when planning an eco-tour, whether close to home or abroad.

The Rise Of Purposeful Travel

The tourism sector is always evolving to meet new interests in the latest travel trends. Gone are the days when holidays meant passive relaxation; many people now crave trips that bring them closer to local culture and nature. Nature-focused stays and eco adventures have become favourites in meeting these demands.

While exploring sustainable travel options, you may also have noticed the uptick in motorhomes for sale or rent. Motorhomes offer the freedom to explore locations off the beaten path and are another eco-friendly option to consider. Overall, these travel options enrich not just your experience but also positively affect both local communities and nature.

Selecting The Perfect Nature-Focused Stay

Finding an eco-friendly place to stay has become easier due to a growing range of options. Treehouses and glamping yurts offer a unique and luxurious experience nestled within forests, while eco-lodges focus on low-impact living without skimping on comfort. However, these aren’t your only choices.

Sustainable travel options come in three notable forms. These include:

  • Eco-Tourism: Enjoy natural surroundings while minimising your ecological footprint.
  • Voluntourism: Integrate a service element into your trip and contribute to local communities or ecosystems while on vacation.
  • Responsible Tourism: Extend your eco-consciousness to include respect for local cultures and communities.

Before booking your stay, scrutinise the sustainability initiatives taken by the accommodation. Look at its environmental impact, what unique experiences it provides, and its compatibility with the local habitat. For instance, places like the Daintree Peaks Eco Stays in Austrialia or the Hana Land Elephant Mountain in Vietnam make conservation a priority.

Thrilling Eco Adventures

If you’re in search of thrills, look no further. There’s an assortment of eco adventures tailored to pump up your adrenaline. Whether it’s kayaking in New Zealand’s fjords or walking up the routes in the Alps, the options are limitless.

Thrills aside, make a conscious decision to select local operators who are committed to green practices. Take, for example, the wildlife safaris in Kenya’s Maasai Mara or rainforest hikes in Costa Rica. Many of these excursions are run by community members engaged in wildlife preservation.

Sustainable Practices And Conservation Initiatives

An increasing number of accommodations and tour operators are incorporating green initiatives, from water conservation to waste management. Small actions like forgoing plastic bottles can make a big difference in these locations. Notably, some eco lodges and adventure operators collaborate with local conservation efforts.

Participating in conservation efforts adds a new dimension to your travel experience. By choosing these types of lodgings or activities, you play a part in preserving nature and protecting local species diversity. For example, the Tambopata Research Center in Peru is an eco-lodge that actively engages guests in their macaw conservation projects.

Other Benefits Of Eco Adventures

The benefits of eco adventures go beyond the obvious; they can be personally transformative but are often underestimated. Participating in activities that focus on sustainability often encourages mindfulness. You become more aware of your surroundings, how you fit into them, and how your actions, even in a seemingly remote corner of the planet, have far-reaching implications. You also gain a broader viewpoint that can have a lasting impact on your everyday life.

Furthermore, eco adventures frequently offer educational components that conventional trips might overlook. Whether you’re learning about local flora and fauna, traditional farming methods, or a place’s history from a sustainability standpoint, what you learn can be highly beneficial.

And this acquired wisdom isn’t just a personal asset; it becomes a form of advocacy. Returning home, you’re armed with valuable insights and experiences that allow you to inform others about why sustainable travel and environmental care matter. That may be the best part about going on eco-friendly vacations. Learning while enjoying the sights and sounds is not something you can experience every day.

mindfulness and relax in nature

Conclusion

Travelling with a purpose is changing people’s outlook on vacations, giving them a lens through which they can connect more authentically to the places they explore. Eco adventures and nature-friendly stays are central to this growing interest, offering both enriching experiences and a commitment to sustainability.

As you start planning your next trips, make a collective decision to opt for travel that respects the Earth and supports local communities. By making conscious decisions, you can turn your vacations into meaningful experiences that resonate far beyond your immediate surroundings.

In Tuscany 23 roads run through the hills covered with vineyards and olive trees, run into medieval towns, hidden churches, villas and farmhouses. They are the wine routes, paths leading into the rural heart of the region that will allow you to live in deep contact with nature. One way to discover these itineraries is definitely on horseback!

Discover the most beautiful corners of the Alps, those that can only be reached on foot: views that only people who are willing to make an effort can admire. Experience the excitement of reaching the top of a peak, of breathing light and fresh air, of seeing chamois running through the meadows … Put on comfortable shoes and prepare the backpack: here are five recommended walking routes across the Alpine Pearls.

1.Tremis di Cermignon – France

This Pearl, at the border with Val di Susa is surrounded by the majestic mountain peaks of the Vanoise National Park with its glaciers. You can explore intact nature, walking along the approximately 350km of paths through the wilderness Maurienne Vanoise. An unforgettable round-trip through the entire region is the Grand Tour de Haute Maurienne. The route is divided into ten stages, each lasting from 4 to 8 hours walking, crossing the most beautiful corners, including alpine huts, clear pools and stone villages. Depending on your freetime (…and your fitness!), you can decide whether to follow it enterely or only along some of the stages.

2. Val di Funes – Italy

Here we are, in South Tyrol, in the heart of Puez-Odle National Park, surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Dolomites standing inbetween candid blue skies and fresh green lawns. Trekking routes through the valley are really a lot and of course, after the effort you can enjoy excellent traditional dishes in cozy alpine huts! I suggest an original idea if you are on vacation with your children. The Mineral Museum of Tiso has created some walking paths to explore the geological and botanical characteristic of the territory. One of these is the circular path to the pond called “Mesner Lake”. It starts from the central square of the village of Tiso, heading north, toward a small lake. A comfortable path, that can be easily followed by strollers and wheelchairs, goes around the pond. There are also many benches from which you can enjoy the sun, watching at dragonflies dancing and listening to the concert of frogs, while your children are playing all around. Some fragments of rocks tell the geological history of the area. You can decide to go back passing through the “Kårrner Waldele” playground and the hill of “Schelmbühl”.

3. Mallnitz – Austria

Take a walk through Hohe Tauern National Park, a real paradise for trekking lovers, with its three valleys, crossed by 200km of trails and walking paths even at high altitude. An interesting path is the “Roman trail”. It starts from Mallnitz and reaches Sportgastein following an ancient Roman road. Along the way you will also find references to the history of the place. Merge yourself with the nature of the Hohe Tauern and discover the consequences of climate change on the territory, including rocky moraines of ancient glaciers.

4. Arosa – Swiss

A walking holiday in Arosa is ideal for those seeking tranquility. The particular position differentiates this Swiss Pearl from other hiking areas in the surroundings. Between the village of Arosa and Weißhorn meet unique limestone cliffs. This unusual combination is ideal for life of over 900 species of flowers, ferns, mosses and mushrooms. 200 km of walking and hiking trails are waiting for you to enjoy the unique spectacle of nature. Get an hiking map and start your journey through beautiful forests, with crystal clear alpine lakes or pointing up into the peaks of 3000 meters. Arosa expect you with hiking tours for all tastes!

5. Ceresole Reale – Italy

Associazione Amici del Gran Paradiso laghetto

Let us move to Piedmont, in the Gran Paradiso National Park, between glaciers, cliffs and mountain peaks. Start your walk from Ceresole and hike through the park: this is one of the stages of the Grand Tour of Piedmont, an hiking trail through the Alps, from the Tanaro Valley to Lake Maggiore! Here is an interesting route from Ceresole (1584m), to Lake Dres (2087m) in 3 hours, following an easy path! The trail starts from the paved road along the south side of Lake Ceresole, in near of Villa Poma. The wide path, after about ten minutes forks, from one side to the Passo della Crocetta, the other towards Lake Dres and Refuge Leonesi. After passing the main stream, the trail winds within one of the most interesting coniferous forests of the Park, including larches, firs and stone pine. It continues in a picturesque expanse of pastures in the presence of the Eastern Levanna and you will reach the glacial basin filled by the lake, near which you can spot the common frog, the species that lays its eggs in mountain lakes above 2500 m quote!

The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve was created in 1983 due to the will of the Lombardy Region. It is a flat area of about 1600 hectares between Valchiavenna and Valtellina. The Mezzola Lake is situated precisely within the reserve, north of Como Lake. It is separated from the Como Lake by the Mera River, which passes in the western part of the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve. This lake is located 200 metres above sea level and bathes the provinces of Como and Sondrio. In particular, it bathes the municipalities of Gera, Lario, Dubino, Sorico, Novate Mezzola, and Verceia.

The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve has an inestimable naturalistic value because it is the location where many species of migratory birds land during their migratory routes. In fact, the reserve is part of the European Ecological Network “Natura 2000”.

It is a set of places characterized by a variety of both flora and fauna, and which for this reason is of community interest and is protected to ensure that the abundant biodiversity is protected.

Why should you visit the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve?

Undoubtedly, there are many routes that you can do – especially in the perimeter area of the park – both alone and accompanied by a Guide of the Reserve. In this way, you can discover the morphology of the Reserve itself as well as learn about various historical and environmental aspects that characterize it. This destination is ideal for both expert walkers and for those who are less so, including families with children.

There are various routes both on mule tracks surrounded by greenery and in nature and on dirt roads.

How to reach the Reserve? You should leave the car in the area called “Ponte dell’Adda” and start from there the walk around Mezzola Lake.

Itineraries in the Pian di Spagna Reserve

There are several route options that are ideal for those who love walking in nature while admiring its beauties:

  1. A beautiful walking itinerary starts near the Adda Bridge, where you can admire the Fuentes Dort. You can also cover it by bicycle, in order to arrive at Cascina Lodoletta.
  2. Another ring itinerary has both arrival and departure from the locality of Beletrone. It develops entirely within the reserve and is very suggestive.
  3. A beautiful route lasting 3 hours, also suitable for less experienced travellers, starts from Dascio and reaches the Temple of San Fedelino in the locality of Sorico. Legends say that the church was built on the spot where the bones of the martyr Fedele were found in 964. You can also reach the temple by boat from the small port of Verceia.
  4. If you love birds, the right route for you is the one that goes from Ponte del Passo to Sasso di Dascio, which also has a unique view of the Mezzola Lake

But the real wonder is what we find on the shores of Mezzola Lake: a unique flora and fauna.

Flora and Fauna of the Mezzola Lake

As far as plants are concerned, you will find reeds, water lilies, and sedges, which have narrow and hard leaves and are grouped in tufts.

Talking about animals, you can find herons, swans, seagulls, cormorants, swallows, titmice, and much more.

“Pian di Spagna” is among the most important reserves not just on a national, but also on a European level. In fact, here you can find many species of ducks that winter here and live on the lake itself. The purpose of the area is to be a safe port for many birds during migration.

When should you go to the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve

If you are a birdwatching lover, the ideal period is November and May. Otherwise, any time is fine even if it is better if you avoid hot days as there are not many places to shelter from the scorching sun.

For more information visit the website of the Natural Reserve.
