Why is everyone talking about veganism? In recent years, going vegetarian or vegan has gained significant popularity, and for a good reason. Let us tell you what are the benefits and advantages of leaving animal products out of our diet. It is beneficial not only for your health but also for the environment!

If you’ve never tried the vegan diet, read on to find out where you can do it on your next vacation.

Benefits of Vegan Diet

Photo by KLIV BRAND on Unsplash

The health benefits

First and most important is our health. A plant-based diet is linked to significant health benefits. Emphasizing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes while limiting red and processed meat and dairy. For instance lower risk of chronic diseases, type 2 diabetes, improved weight management, and enhanced overall well-being. A well-balanced vegan diet can also improve heart health among many other benefits.

The benefits for the planet

If we look further from our own health, there is much more to note. Several studies, including the UN’s Panel on Climate Change, highlight the potential of plant-based diets in reducing carbon footprints and combating climate change. Shifting towards a vegan diet can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional ones.

Further on, according to this report, by 2050, meat and dairy farms will account for 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Of course only if production remains unregulated. Instead, if there were a global shift to a plant-based diet, it could reduce greenhouse gases caused by food production by 70%, respectively, by 2050.

If people would only cut out red meat from their diet, that would already help mitigate the problem. Indeed, beef contributes the most global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the study talking about meat production.

Reducing livestock herds not only curbs emissions but also addresses concerns related to methane, a major contributor to global warming. It is released during enteric fermentation in cattle and when managing animal manure.

For example, according to one climate change calculator, eating a typical fast-food hamburger (75 gr) daily for a year contributes greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving a car 11,580 km. It equals to crossing the United States about 2.5 times. Comparing that to eating about a third of a can of beans (150 gr) daily for a year, which is equivalent to driving a car 150 km.

Moreover plant-based diet also requires less water consumption and reduces habitat destruction and loss, which threatens wildlife and plant species. Making even a little change in our everyday lives can get us closer to a more sustainable future.

Where to try it?

The first ecological ways born from the restoration of disused railway lines are located in the United States. It is precisely here that in the first half of the ’60s the first greenways, and in 1986 the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy came to life, an association that promotes the recovery of the immense disused railway heritage. The US is therefore the pioneers of the greenways, with their 1931 rail trail, for a total of 37,750 kilometers.

There is the John Wayne Pioneer Trail, which passes from the state of Washington and is the longest one with 480 km. Then there is the W&OD Railroad Trail in Virginia which is one of the busiest with an average of 3 million users per year.

We move to Europe where the first greenways were born in the late ’80s, in the United Kingdom. Here you can walk or cycle along the Bristol&Bath Railway Path, which was among the first work of recovery of a disused railway. Also Spain and France have over the years invested in greenways: the Via Verdes are 117, while the French Vélorail are 90.

Features and benefits of greenways

The greenways around the world have in common several aspects: being separated from the ordinary road network (they are almost always abandoned railways, but can also be towpaths of rivers or other paths) and dedicated exclusively for non-motorized users, they are safe and accessible; thanks to general moderate slope, it’s easy to enjoy the trails in a slowly way; besides recovering rail lines also the service facilities along the way will be recovered and so, for example, the train stations become dining options.
And the benefits? They are many, and we start with the promotion of a new form of tourism, an active, responsible and sustainable one. But greenways also contribute to the development of the less-known, far from mass tourism, region and they give citizens new spaces for outdoor activities with beneficial effects on their health.

The Greenways in Italy

If the greenways around US and Europe are now well established, what is the Italian situation? The railways that are no longer used in the Italian territory are so many, but still a few have been made accessible in sustainable way. There are some individuals engaged in the promotion of the greenways in Italy, such as the Italian Greenways Association Onlus, but there’s not a national vision that would make possibile the recovering of disused railways and the promotion of sustainable tourism in the country, with huge economic and environmental benefits. Among those greenways that have been created, we recommend you the former Treviso-Ostiglia railway, transformed into a beautiful cycle path. It is 118 km long and runs throughout Veneto region, to arrive at the edge of the Po river. But there is also the Spoleto-Norcia in Umbria, or the Ospedaletti-Imperia,  in Liguria.

Nowadays animal species are going extinct 100 times faster than in the past. Thousands of animals are on the verge of extinction due to pollution, the destruction of their habitat, and climate change. It is essential to change course, to promote biodiversity: let’s see why.

How many animals are endangered?

What does the word “extinction” mean? The term extinction indicates a natural phenomenon in which an animal species, following a slow but constant change, is replaced by the appearance of new species. It is not always a bad thing, but it should be a wake-up call.

An albatross

The study carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which every year publishes the Red List of endangered species, indicates over 42,000 endangered species between animals and plants.

The worst thing is that 515 of these species (including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) don’t reach 1,000 specimens in the whole world.

Why are they endangered?

What are the main causes which are leading to the extinction of these animal species? There are many causes. As far as large animals are concerned, like gorillas, elephants, rhinos, and tigers, illegal poaching has a huge influence. But other causes may be involved, such as, for polar bears, climate change, and the melting of the glaciers.

A polar bear swimming. It is part of the endangered animal species

Let’s analyse in depth the causes that are leading towards the extinction of these animals.

Certainly, since the 19th century, i.e. since the Industrial Revolution, there have been many important changes that are modifying ecosystems and accelerating climate change. Some of these drastic changes, which are causing the extinction of many animal species are:

A polluted beach. This is a consequence of the overuse of plastic.
Polluted sea and beaches, Image via Canva Pro
  1. Climate change: which has significantly increased the average temperature of the planet
  2. Air pollution: nearly 25% of birds suffer serious damage each year due to air pollution
  3. Marine pollution: according to WWF, every year about 600 tons of plastic and 500 tons of oil are introduced into our seas, and this causes the destruction of marine ecosystems and the death of many animals
  4. Soil consumption: the exploitation of the land to build buildings and roads reduces the natural habitats available for animal species
  5. Deforestation: the loss of ancient forests and huge green areas, such as the Amazon Rainforest, and fires create further problems for animals
  6. Overexploitation of the planet’s resources: the excessive use of subsoil resources (oil and gas) contributes to the destruction of natural environments
  7. Intensive uncontrolled hunting and fishing: as a consequence, animal species cannot survive and therefore reproduce

Endangered animal species in the whole world

Here there’s a list of some endangered species in the world and some solutions in order to preserve them:

A tortoise, which is now part of captive breeding programs in order to avoid its extinction

  • Spanish giant tortoise: the extinction of these tortoises found in the Galapagos Islands has been avoided thanks to a captive breeding program
  • Borneo pangolin: this species, found in the forests of Southeast Asia, is fortunately protected because just a few specimens remain
  • Vaquita: there seem to be only 12 specimens in the Gulf of California. However, they are constantly monitored to avoid permanent disappearance

Endangered animals in Italy

Here we analyse some endangered species in Italy and how the government and the associations are trying to save them:

A wolf, which is an example of endangered animal species in Italy
Wolf, Image via Canva Pro
  • Alpine ibex: it had risked disappearing at the end of the 19th century, but today it seems that this risk has been avoided and is now protected in the National Parks
  • Wolf: in the 70s of the 20th century it was an endangered species. However, thanks to excellent protection projects it has had a good increase
  • Bats: they are a new entry since they have become an endangered species since 2017

In order to raise public awareness of this issue, the “World Animal Day” was established. It is held every year on October 4th, on the occasion of the Day of Saint Francis (saint of animals). This day aims to celebrate and protect the rights of all animals in the world.

In spring, the Alpine slopes awaken from their winter hibernation accompanied by the colours, scents, and products of nature. It’s the perfect time to set out to discover the unique flavours of the mountains. Therefore, we recommend you 7 food and wine itineraries that you can’t miss in the Alpine Pearls. For the uninitiated, the Alpine Pearls are an international circuit that puts together Alpine resorts committed to reducing their ecological footprint and promoting sustainable mobility.

Are you ready to discover the natural beauty of the Alps combined with the flavours of the typical local dishes? Let’s go!

1. #CHEESNIC – San Martino di Castrozza (Trentino)

The first destination is located in the heart of the Trentino Alps. Between an excursion in the woods and a via ferrata, #CHEESNIC awaits you in July in San Martino di Castrozza. What is it about? As you can guess, you can compose a customizable picnic at km0, and then consume it immersed in nature. The initiative, supported by restaurants and huts, allows you to buy local food and wine to compose your gourmet baskets.

Besides helping local producers, to emphasize the importance of “zero waste” you will receive a “Refill&Taste” bottle as a gift. In this way, you will be able to taste water coming from the mountain springs, easily identifiable through the app Refill, which can be downloaded on all mobile devices.

Where to sleep green: at the Hotel Isolabella Wellness. It is located in the nearby town of Fiera di Primiero, where you will find a beautiful wellness center. It uses energy from renewable sources and offers free bicycles to ride along the cycle path located right in front of the structure.

2. Earth Market – Alpe Cimbra (Trentino)

Starting from the end of May, every third Saturday of the month, you can visit the Earth Market in the main towns of Alpe Cimbra in Trentino. The market, organized by the Slow Food Community for the Agro-cultural Development of the Cimbrian Plateaus, takes place in the municipalities of Lavarone, Folgaria, Luserna, and Vigolana, all belonging to the Cimbrian Plateau. The itinerary belonging to the Alpine Pearls has been created to generate a meeting place between local producers, the inhabitants, and guests, in order to delight the palates of everyone with food derived from local products.

Where to sleep green: the Hotel du Lac, with a view of the magnificent Lavarone Lake. It is provided with columns to recharge electric vehicles, powered with renewable energy, thanks to photovoltaic panels.

3. Gourmet Cellars – Cogne (Aosta)

Are you a food and wine lover? This is your event! The Pearl of Cogne organizes the “Gourmet Cellars” tour: three days (9-11 July) immersed in nature, accompanied by the best local DOC labels. The aperitif obviously includes a degustation of some of the delicious dishes of the “Cogneintse” tradition. Soça, Favò, cured meats, and sweets are perfectly prepared by the hands of the expert chefs of the area.

Where to sleep green: at the Bellevue Hotel & SPA, a welcoming environment, with a large garden and organic vegetable garden. The cook will delight you with the cuisine entirely characterized by zero-kilometer products from the area.

4. Herb Festival – Forni di Sopra (Udine)

The essence of nature is enclosed in the properties of herbs: from cooking to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. You can concentrate on the discovery of all these peculiarities during the magnificent Herb Festival (10-11 and 17-18 June). The program of this event consists in retracing the mountain paths guided by an expert botanist. The peculiarity is that you can walk through the paths where the apothecaries and distillers of the Serenissima Republic of Venice went in the past, in search of herbs to create their precious products among the Alpine Pearls.

Where to sleep green: at the Hotel Posta, which allows you to stay in the heart of Forni di Sopra. You can access the facility even without a car, to fully enjoy your stay in nature, thanks to the free guided activities offered by the hotel.

5. Slow Food Travel – Funes (South Tyrol)

The project has extended to South Tyrol. Starting in May, the town of Funes hosts the “Slow Food Travel” summer program. Don’t worry, there are initiatives for everyone: starting with itineraries where you will discover the properties of food and medicinal herbs, passing through cheese tastings and workshops to prepare butter and bread in the farmsteads, as well as traveling through the various trails in the South Tyrolean Alps, on foot or by bike. The organizers structure the event in order to reconcile the discovery of the territory with its local delicacies.

Where to sleep green: at the Hotel Tyrol, in the charming town of Santa Maddalena, overlooking the Odle group. Its structure, which follows the principles of bio-architecture, with a swimming pool, whirlpool, and panoramic view, will allow you to recharge your batteries.

6. International Wildflower Festival – Bohinj (Slovenia)

The Alpine Pearl Project also takes you beyond the borders of the Italian Peninsula. We are in Slovenia, more precisely in Bohinj, which organizes the “International Wildflower Festival” again this year, from the 19th of May to the 4th of June. Accompanied by the fantastic atmosphere of the homonymous lake, the landscape during this period is tinged with bright colours. The festival calendar includes various events which you can enjoy yourself, such as guided excursions, workshops, conferences, markets, and live music. As icing on the cake, they also pay particular attention to the use of flowers in gastronomy.

Where to sleep green: at the Eco Villa Triglav on Pokljuka, consisting of ecological apartments and chalets, located in the heart of the Triglav National Park. Your stay will be delighted by the outdoor hot tub, which reuses rainwater.

7. Slow Food Travel Destination – Weissensee (Austria)

Last but not least, let’s explore the Pearl of Weissensee, in Austria, which is the first destination in the world to earn the title of Slow Food Travel Destination. This destination offers you a wide range of food products on the banks of its alpine lake. Its particular commitment to zero kilometer products is also due to the passion with which the small local manufacturers have handed down the knowledge from generation to generation, maintaining, as you will be able to taste firsthand, and extraordinary food and wine heritage.

Where to sleep green: at the Bio-Vitalhotel Weissenseerhof, an eco-friendly hotel immersed in the unspoiled nature of Carinthia. This corner of paradise, a few steps away from Lake Weissensee, offers you the opportunity to taste traditional dishes, cooked with organic and local products.

In recent years, much progress has been made on environmental issues including topics from different fields (educational, social, economic). Among these advances “Corporate Social Responsibility” stands out, which has a high positive impact on the companies that carry it out.

Have you heard about CSR? It is important to know what it is in order to choose accommodations that have committed to responsible and environmentally friendly practices.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Environment

According to the UN definition, sustainable development is the satisfaction of the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” which seeks to achieve balanced economic, social, and environmental development. For this reason, it is of utmost importance that companies committed to each of their actions their business actions to achieve sustainable development. But, it is also, important that people who hire the services of a company know about the subject to make better choices and thus contribute to more responsible development and environmentally friendly practices.

CSR is made up of the dimensions previously mentioned -social, economic, and environmental- and the companies that commit to furthering CSR goals and practices are currently positioned as the most competitive due to the positive impact of their actions.

Tourism companies and CSR

Companies have a great responsibility for environmental, political, and social issues due to the operations they carry out. A company’s operations have many responsibilities according to its activities, processes, and objectives.

In a globalized world, where the rules are not the same for all countries, Corporate Social Responsibility generates a balance between the social actors involved in the company and the natural environment that is affected by the company and its actions.

A tourism company must be aware of the positive but also negative impacts that tourism activity has on it’s local environment..

How to choose a lodging with Corporate Social Responsibility?

You can choose such a host by identifying some key issues that should be carried out by the company.

It is important that the company is committed primarily to its employees and to the local community where it is located. It must have clear and specific public-private commitments.

Important issues to consider:

  • Commitment to the environment and the preservation of biodiversity
  • Commitment to climate change
  • Education and equality among employees
  • Future goals that include the local community
  • Sustainable food practices and use of local foods

How can you identify these issues?

Reading the accommodation’s website, mainly the section on sustainability, or check the Ecobnb platform

Communicating in advance with the host and asking specific questions

Taking into account other guests’ reviews and experiences

The Mediterranean Sea is located between three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. It receives this name because it comes from the Latin ” medi terraneum ” which means ” sea in the middle of the land “. That is, it is surrounded by lands of high extension. Through the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea connects with the Atlantic Ocean and is characterized by its great biodiversity: it is home to between 4% and 18% of the world’s marine species and has a very high value both ecologically and economically.

Why are water resources so important?

The presence of seas and oceans is fundamental for life on Earth, as they provide most of the oxygen we breathe. They are also a source of food, life and are fundamental in regulating the climate.

From an economic point of view, activities such as fishing, tourism, and maritime transport are developed on the basis of water resources and allow the development of societies.

The Mediterranean Sea needs help

Despite the economic and ecological importance of the Mediterranean Sea, currently and for many years it has faced major problems of anthropogenic origin, that are caused by human activities

Some of these activities are:

  • Overfishing
  • Destructive fishing techniques
  • Pollution
  • Overpopulation on the coasts
  • Mass tourism
  • Poor (or not) waste treatment

Alarming figures

According to WWF Spain

“The Mediterranean accumulates only 1% of the world’s water and 7% of global microplastics”

Europe dumps 500,000 tons of microplastics into the sea and 130,000 tons of microplastics

Europe (the 28 members of the EU + Norway and Switzerland)  is the third largest producer of plastics in the world after China and North America

Most of the plastics used in the countries are for packaging

In the Mediterranean Sea, more than 134 species (fish, sea turtles, mammals, and birds) are threatened by the ingestion of plastics.

Consequences of Plastics in the Sea

Plastic waste pollutes the coasts and directly affects marine fauna

According to the European Parliament Research Service , the main people affected by their presence at sea are:

  1. Marine life
  2. Economy
  3. Human health
  4. Climate

The case of Sicily Island

Map of Sicily
Map of Sicily-Photo by Canva Pro

Located in the South of Italy, Sicily is not only the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, also has a strategic geopolitical location, is rich in culture and history, possesses valuable natural resources, indescribable landscapes, and unique gastronomy.

Different cultures have left their traces on this island throughout time and this can be seen in its diverse architectural styles, markets, temples, handicrafts, gastronomy, and creative environment in general.

That is why thousands of tourists visit the island every year and are attracted by this great cultural diversity accompanied by unique landscapes.

But unfortunately, it suffers from a serious problem that threatens its riches and its potential: the amount of garbage present in its terrestrial and maritime space, mainly the plastics that surround its coasts and are visible throughout the Island.

Plastic pollution affects the most remote places in the world and harms both natural environments and people’s health.

In the places most visited by tourists, as in the least frequented of Sicily, cigarette butts and plastics are concentrated in large quantities.

Both the beaches, the mountains, and the streets of the cities are affected by the problem of plastic. The beaches look like garbage dumps and all that garbage ends up deposited in the sea.

There are those who hold tourists responsible, but there is also a great responsibility on the part of various social actors such as municipalities, companies, and part of the local population in environmental contamination and the alarming amount of garbage that the island contains.

During the months of high season, tourist cities multiply their in large quantities their population, therefore it is necessary a commitment from them, as well as from institutions, companies and citizens to regulate the use of plastics.

Look for alternatives to plastic products, control the separation of waste, prohibition of single-use plastics, correct recycling and reuse of plastics, and the daily cleaning of beaches and spaces in general.

The need for environmental education, awareness, and commitment is reflected in the large amount of plastics and garbage in general that are visible in the most beautiful landscapes of Sicily and countless natural areas around the world. This is generating irreversible consequences.

To achieve the true tourist and economic growth of these spaces, it is necessary to achieve sustainable development and in harmony with the environment, otherwise there will be no future or possible development.

Winter holidays can bring a sense of joy and warmth that contrasts beautifully with the crisp coldness of the season. It’s a time when the streets are aglow with twinkling lights, homes are adorned with festive decorations, and an air of cheer permeates through the biting cold. Gifts are carefully selected and wrapped with love, meals are prepared with painstaking precision, and the collective excitement builds to a crescendo as people countdown to the festive celebrations.

However, amid this whirlwind of joy and excitement, it’s essential to pause and reflect on the environmental impact of the celebrations. Winter holidays can also be a period of excessive consumption and waste. But there’s good news: it’s entirely possible to celebrate the festivities in a fun way while also prioritizing sustainability.

Below are the ten tips for a more sustainable winter holiday:

  1. Choose Sustainable Travel Options: If traveling is part of your holiday tradition, try to choose the most sustainable options. This could mean taking a train instead of a plane, carpooling with family or friends, or offsetting your carbon emissions if you must fly. All these can help make your winter holiday eco-friendlier.
  1. Pick Eco-Friendly Accommodations: If you want to spend your holidays in another place, make sure to choose from a list of accommodations not only equipped with stunning amenities but which are also sustainable.  Doing so can help minimize your environmental impact and boost the local economy, as well as allow you to learn more about the local area to enjoy an authentic experience.

  1. Use Environmentally Friendly Decorations: Instead of buying new decorations each year, consider using what you already have. For example, you can hang a used wreath on your front door or make your own using sustainable materials. On the other hand, if you must buy, opt for eco-friendly alternatives, like decorations made from natural materials or recycled goods. If you want to decorate with lighting, LED lights are a good choice to ensure energy-efficiency
  1. Host Eco-Friendly Parties: When hosting holiday gatherings, aim to use reusable plates, glasses, and cutlery instead of disposable ones. Also, consider serving locally sourced food and drinks. Lastly, get the guests involved and send digital invitations to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.
  1. Minimize Food Waste: Plan your holiday meals carefully to avoid food waste. Try to prepare just enough to satisfy your guests without leftovers that may go uneaten. If there are leftovers, use them the next day to make new meals or snacks. Also, consider composting kitchen scraps instead of throwing them away in landfills.
  1. Donate Rather Than Discard: Consider donating unwanted gifts or decorations instead of throwing them away after the holidays. Many charities will be happy to receive these items, which can bring others joy. Donating some stuff can help those in need while minimizing waste and protecting the environment.

  1. Shop Locally: Support local businesses and artisans to reduce your carbon footprint as the goods don’t have to travel long distances. Also, opt for locally made goods with less packaging to ensure less waste. If you don’t want to buy, try to grow your own food in your backyard to minimize waste and eat healthily.
  1. Give Thoughtful Gifts: Instead of buying new items, consider giving experiences, like concert tickets or cooking classes, that create memories rather than waste. Alternatively, consider giving hand-made gifts or items made from recycled or natural materials. For example, you can give recycled paper notebooks made from post-consumer recycled paper.

  1. Recycle Gift Wrapping: Instead of buying new wrapping paper each year, consider reusing gift bags, wrapping presents in newspapers, or using reusable cloth bags. If you prefer to buy new, choose wrapping paper made from recycled materials. By doing all these, you can show support to the environment by diverting too much waste from landfills.
  1. Opt For A Real Tree: While it may seem counterintuitive, real trees for Christmas are more sustainable than artificial ones, typically made from non-recyclable materials and can take centuries to decompose. Ensure the tree comes from a sustainable farm and recycle it after the holidays.

Conclusion

By incorporating these changes into your holiday traditions, you contribute to a more sustainable future. Making conscious decisions about the decorations you use, the gifts you give, and the food you consume can significantly impact the environment. As the awareness about environmental conservation grows, it becomes increasingly important to consider how your holiday traditions can align with these values. The spirit of the holidays is about love, joy, and peace—what better way to embody this spirit than by honoring and protecting your shared home, the Earth?
