Let’s discover the unexpected beauty of Ljubljana, a vibrant city with thousands of years long history and that is now pointing to a green future.

Ljubljana is an amazing town, a small European gem that in a short time has become a model of livability and eco-sustainability for all medium-sized cities in Europe.

Ljubljana is the European Green Capital of 2016

The first thing is the absence of cars and noise, the second the greenery: when you get to the city center quickly becomes clear why it was named European Green Capital. In just over ten years, Ljubljana, thanks to the administration and the citizens, has been transformed from a modern perspective, emphasizing its history and its culture, and proceeding quickly towards a green future, with zero emissions. New trees have been planted, a great and free public transport service has been created and the quality of life of citizens has been greatly improved.

Now the center is closed to traffic, and citizens and tourists move on foot or by bike, they take the Kavalir, free electric taxis or Urban, the bus, electric too, which connects the Town Hall Square with the Castle dominating the city from the hill Grajska Planota.

What to see in Ljubljana

At the center of the continent, Ljubljana has always been a crossroads of peoples, a city with a long history of 5000 years, still, be seen in its architecture and in its streets. But at the same time it is a young city, thanks to the presence of 22 university faculties, and particularly lively. Theaters, art galleries, local markets, and many events light up the Slovenian capital, without losing the relaxed and calm atmosphere that characterizes it.

Ljubljana is a place to discover slowly, without any programs: strolling along the Ljubljanica River, passing the picturesque bridges (first of all the Dragon Bridge, the symbol of the city), entering in the park Tivoli, in the center of the city, cycling through the baroque and Art Nouveau palaces, exploring the covered market, between a boat trip and a glass of Ganje (typical Slovenian grappa). And so, inevitably, you’ll fall in love with Ljubljana, an incredible city between past and future.

Beautiful nature, charming, clustered stone villages, hospitable locals with a pleasant, melodic dialect, and excellent cuisine will strongly impress the visitor of Slovene Istria, who travels along the narrow winding roads in the hinterland of the Slovenian coast.

Nine settlements with many hamlets form the local community of Gradin that is the most remote local community in the Municipality of Koper, Slovenia. Distance from cities is an advantage in these places. Unspoiled nature, clean air, silence, and excellent spring water, will embrace the visitor with peace and contribute to better well-being.

Green Gradin’s History

In the 1960s and 1970s, villages in the area were rapidly emptied due to a wave of emigration to major cities. People longed for better living and working conditions, and the infrastructure here was disorganized, with only farming offering a modest income.

It was not until the 1980s that living conditions in the area slowly began to improve, and the villages gradually got asphalt roads and water supply. Several more decades passed before people started to return to abandoned homes, renovate and build houses, cultivate overgrown fertile areas and bring life back to empty villages.

Accommodation

In Green Gradin, tourism is at its beginnings, so there are only a few possibilities for accommodation. However,  the existing ones are designed and furnished with good taste in a traditional style and offer a unique experience of living. Among all Gradin’s accommodation facilities there is one very unique and different. The Sunny hill permaculture homestead

The Sunny Hill in Hrvoji village is a permaculture homestead that offers simple accommodation in a former rectory, restored with natural materials. The house has clay plasters and wooden floors. The food on Sunny Hill is mostly organic, and the vegetables and spices are grown in their permaculture gardens. At Sunny Hill, they organize cultural evenings or socialize by the bone fire with music. Guests from the house and surroundings are welcome.

Rich flavors of the Istrian hinterland

Istrian cuisine is characterized by rich and full flavors created by imaginative combinations of fresh local ingredients with the addition of herbs and wild plants. The simple preparation of traditional dishes and the abundant use of olive oil ensures an authentic taste and a healthy culinary experience. Gradin gastronomy truffles

The cuisine of the Istrian hinterland is known for the specialties that the visitor in Green Gradin must try. These include homemade pasta (fuži),  polenta, gnocchi, various stews, and venison. Traditional dishes are prepared with different meat products (prosciutto, pancetta, blood sausages, sausages), delicious cheeses (sheep, goat, and cow), and eggs.

Gradin traditional gastronomy Green Gradin gastronomy

Stunning wine

On the sunny terraces of Gradin hills, vines, which have been traditionally grown in Istria for centuries, grow beautifully. In the past, farmers produced wine for their own needs without the right knowledge, so traditional varieties such as Malvasia and Refošk were not appreciated.

New generations of winemakers are educated and nowadays they produce top-quality wines, from old grape varieties, so the Malvazija and Refošk have become synonymous with good Istrian wine. In Green Gradin we find some excellent winemakers, and pay them a visit in their hospitable canteens.

Natural attractions

The hinterland of Slovenian Istria hides many natural beauties worth visiting that will leave you in surprise. Because there is little water in these places, the locals appreciate every stream and spring. In settlements, we often see wells and fountains where they collected water for everyday use. From late autumn to early spring, and in summer after stormy days, the waterfalls of the Pasjak stream are impressive.

The village of Abitanti boasts the oldest oak in Istria. For more than 500 years, it has spread its canopy just a stone’s throw from the entrance to the village. In 2014, the locals in the village of Brezovica near Gradin unexpectedly discovered the Kubik spring. In a common working action they wanted to clear the impassable path, but they found a spring that had been hidden for decades. Near the spring is the Kubik cave, the entrance to which is difficult to access, although the cave then widens and deepens.

Gradin izvir Kubik

From Hrvoji to Abitanti, a 5 km long footpath leads through the magical valley of Malinska. It was named after several mills (Malin) that used to grind grain into flour in the past. In winter a lively river partly dries up during the dry months. A walk through the valley brings calmness, nourishes walkers with fresh air, and enchants their ears with a  birdsong. The path on the left and right is surrounded by a forest that through the decades has overgrown the former meadows. Malinska

Heritage

The hinterland of Slovenian Istria has an extremely rich history, so all the treasures of the architectural and cultural heritage that we find here are interesting and unique.

Abitanti is a beautiful village lying in the middle of unspoiled nature. It is surrounded by fields and vineyards,  given a special charm by stone houses with stone balconies and arches. The village is best known for its Istrian architecture – stone and drywall, which means that people built houses with their own hands and without binding material. Since 2018 the drywall has been on the UNESCO list of world heritage. Since 1987, the entire village has been declared a cultural monument of local significance.

Abitanti

Near the village of Topolovec is the almost 1000 years old church of St. Hieronymus. There is a story that under the church of St. Hieronymus a treasure was buried. For this legend, probably strangers smashed the altar and dug up the place where it stood. In 2019, the church of St. Hieronymus was rebuilt and saved from ruin.church of St. Hieronymus

Go glamping in Slovenia in Koren Kobarid Campsite, a second home for contemporary adventure seekers and sanctuary from everyday stress in the gorgeous natural environment of Soča Valley

Exterior of Koren Kabarid Campsite

Kamp Koren isn’t far from the town of Kobarid, on the left bank of the river Soča, which is considered as one of the five naturally best preserved rivers in the Alps. Here, the emerald green river flows through a short but truly evocative canyon, slows down on the beautiful white gravel river bank and meanders through the Soča Valley. Near the campsite are also the waterfalls of the stream Kozjak and a renovated front line from the First World War.

Glamping in Slovenia

The campsite features various zones for tents, campers and caravans, with electric hook-up points and campfire spots; but if you’re looking for something different, why don’t you try glamping in Slovenia? There are six beautiful wooden ECO-chalets (in two of them, pets are allowed) that offer a luxurious stay on two levels with 100 square meters in total size. A stay in eco chalets is especially comfortable due to the warmth of the wood, which always creates the optimal climate in the rooms.

There’s a second alternative for your glamping in Slovenia: you can stay in a glamorous, insulated and heated wooden house, built of natural materials and suitable for rent in all seasons. This house has a special panoramic glass wall through which you have a direct view of the outside directly from your bed, and a large wonderful wooden terrace where you can relax. There’s also a smaller glamping wooden house, with a roof skylight window, through which you can observe the starry sky.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Koren Lidija, the owner of Koren Kobarid Campsite, and asked her to tell us more about it. Let’s find out all about this marvelous campsite in Slovenia.Glamping Koren owner

What makes your accommodation special? Why did you enter the green hospitality market?

«We are the first ecological campsite in Slovenia with the Ecocamping certificate and the European certificate for sustainable eco-tourism, EU EcoLabel. Kamp Koren also received the Alan Rogers Award in 2010 in the category of excellent accommodations, and in 2016 we received the title “Slovenia green accommodation”.

View of the campsite

One of the main characteristics of our campsite is a sustainable attitude as a fundamental commitment to nature and our guests. We want to make continuous improvements towards the protection of the environment and nature. The human side of the world of work is also an essential component of our social responsibility. We want to make a contribution to ensuring the livelihood of current and future generations.»

Which criteria of sustainability have you implemented?

«We strive to offer as many products from the local organic cultivation in our store. In the store, which operates within the campground, fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables from the nearby farms and other local specialities, such as cheese, local Slovene honey, herbs, aromatic plants and more, are always available. We also laid out some herb gardens in the campsite, so that our guests can gather fresh herbs for their soup, risotto or grilled fish, free of charge.

Kamp Koren

Along with the EU Ecolabel and the sustainable and ecological orientation of our campsite, we are actively implementing the use of renewable energy sources. For example, we have a heat pump for water heating and we use rainwater for watering the plants. We make sure that we use as many reusable containers as possible and we employ natural, degradable cleaning agents (i.e. vinegar). We recycle and expect the same from our guests, and we encourage green mobility with bikes or E-bikes available at the campsite. Finally, Kamp Koren has an electric vehicle charging station.»

Bikes in Kamp Koren

Which green itineraries in your surroundings do you recommend to your guests?

«In our valley there are a lot of things that are worth seeing. For example, we suggest a visit to the Ecological Farm Žvanč, where you can take part in the traditional cheese making process in the old way on an open fire, presented by the owner of the farm. You can taste various types of domestic spirits, cheese, other dairy and local products.

Cheese making process on open fire Domestic liquor Display of cheeses

There are also many mountain pastures. Guests can visit them, sit down for a while and take a break from the noisy town, breathe in fresh and clean air, watch cows grazing and check how farmers milk them. You can also buy cheese or cottage cheese directly from farms.

Mountains near Kamp Koren Mountain pastures

We also have bikes and E-bikes rental at the campsite, to explore the surrounding beautiful nature and mountains, and after the hiking and biking, you can unwind swimming in Nadiža river, which is well-known for its health benefits.

Bike rentali while glamping in Slovenia Bridge on Nadiza river Riding your bike while glamping in Slovenia

Sport activities are also very popular in our valley. We organize water sports on the Soča river, such as rafting, kayaking, canyoning, or fly-fishing. Also due to stunning views, surrounded by hills and high mountains, Kobarid is regularly visited by many paragliders. The campsite offers not the only organization of air sports but also of hiking and biking tours

Paragliding while glamping in Slovenia Yoga

What do your guests appreciate the most?

«Our guests admire the Soča river and the different possibilities for sports activities on it. They also enjoy the view as the campsite is surrounded by rolling hills and majestic mountains, with the beautiful mountain Krn above all others. This makes the campsite the perfect starting point for hiking and mountaineering.

Soca river near the campsite, view from above Mountain view near Campsite

However, we believe they appreciate the welcoming warmth of our campsite the most, as well as the competence of our staff, always providing them with all the information they need.»

What does being part of Ecobnb’s community of authentic eco-friendly accommodations mean to you?

«The nature-friendly orientation of Koren Campsite is one of our basic features and our main obligation: when we take up a new endeavor, we always think of nature and our guests first. Our policy is to do the best to keep the environment clean or at least have minimum effect on it. We also try to make our guests understand the meaning of an ecological lifestyle. Respect for nature and fellow human beings is a virtue that has been the aim of Kamp Koren ever since it was established.

Keep them in your heart and look forward to the day when you can get to know them to live. Let some of Slovenia enter your home, thanks to virtual reality. We have chosen for you the following Slovenian castles:

1. Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad)

The Castle of Predjama, built around 1200, is located a few kilometers from the Postojna Caves. It stands right at the entrance to a network of karst tunnels, on a 123-meter high rocky wall. The stronghold, directly adjacent to the mountainside, is about 9 kilometers from the city of Postojna. Predjama Castle is an intertwining of man’s work and the creativity of nature. It is one of the most famous Slovenian castles and, unique in its kind, it is among the ten most fascinating castles in the world.

A world-famous cave castle

This is the only castle in the rock in Europe and it is the largest cave castle in the world. It looks like a fairy-tale castle, embraced by rock. But the part of Predjama Castle that most fascinates visitors is the cave behind it.
The castle is open to the public and the visit allows you to discover many original pieces. You can discover the charm of medieval life. Visit the living room, the kitchen, the chapel, the prisons, and the torture room. The attic of the castle offers a wonderful view over the valley and houses a rich collection of medieval weapons and armor, from spears and halberds to swords, hammers, bows, and crossbows.

Erazem of Predjama

According to legend, the rebel knight Erazem of Predjama used tunnels and secret passages behind the Castle for his supplies. And thanks to these tunnels he withstood for more than a year to the siege of the imperial army. Erazem of Lueg is the most famous inhabitant of the castle, and he is an essential part of the history of the Castle. Although brave and almost invincible, Erazem died while he was in his personal bathroom after betrayal by his servant.

The carousel of Erazem

The Castle of Predjama every summer in July becomes the stage of the Erazem tournament of chivalry, during which knights, archers, and swordsmen show off their fighting skills. In this period, the village and inhabitants dress up in medieval clothes.

The second-longest tourist cave in Slovenia

The cave under Predjama Castle is the second-longest cave in Slovenia and extends over four floors. In summer you can visit the underground cave with its 14 km in length. The tourist section, open to the public, is 700 meters long and includes the Stables, the Main Passage, the Cave of Names, the Great Hall, and Fiženca where the access to the surface is located. Inhabited since the Stone Age, the cave also hides Roman artifacts. There is no electric lighting inside the cave, so the visit takes place with torches. Comfortable clothes and shoes are required to visit the tourist part of the cave.

For the more adventurous adrenaline lovers

The bravest visitors, adequately prepared, can visit the Erazem’s and Eastern Passages. They can also participate in a guided tour of the Wind Hole. The most adventurous visits are for those who want to visit the parts of the caves normally closed to mass visits, to experience the most difficult passages, cross the water barriers and try the experience of caving. These visits are possible on reservations for small groups, accompanied by qualified guides, and are divided into different levels of difficulty. In the winter period, the cave offers shelter to a colony of bats and, therefore, during their hibernation the cave remains closed to the public.

2. Bled castle (Blejski Grad)

Bled Castle is one of the most famous Slovenian castles and it is the oldest castle in Slovenian territory. He was named for the first time in 1011, in an act of donation with his name in German form: Castellum Veldes. The castle, symbol of Bled and Slovenia, located on a very steep and imposing cliff at 130 meters, dominates the Lake Bled. The image of the castle above the lake, with the romantic islet and the church, is the characteristic of Bled known all over the world.

Bled’s beauties

Many eminent travelers have spread the fame of the beauty of Bled and its castle; for example Janez Vajkard Valvasor and his Glory of the Duchy of Carniola of 1689. Bled, thanks to its favorable position, in all historical periods has been the scene of diplomatic and protocol meetings at the highest levels. Important statesmen visited Bled Castle and enjoyed its unique panorama.

Castle buildings

The castle buildings are arranged around the courtyards on two levels, the lower and the upper ones. The cellar attracts visitors with tastings of its top-quality wines and a demonstration of bottling of wine from oak barrels.

The Gothic chapel

Visitors to the upper level can also see the Gothic chapel, built in the century XVI. The chapel is dedicated to the bishops St Ingenuin and St Albuin. Inside there are interesting frescoes; on the sides of the altar, there are the images of Emperor Henry II and his wife Cunegonda.

The legend of the castle widow Poliksena

Around the year 1500, the administrator of Bled castle was Hartmann Kreigh. He was not a good owner and the farmers rebelled against him by resorting to the bishop and the king. One day Master Kreigh suddenly disappeared, maybe killed by brigands. Perhaps the farmers had done justice on their own, but we’ll never know.
The widow Poliksena remained crying at the castle. She was a very sad widow, who in memory of her husband, took all the gold and silver in her chests and melted a small bell for the chapel on the Bled island. During transport, a storm broke out, and the boat with the boatmen and the bell sank. Poliksena abandoned the castle and became a nun in Rome. After hearing his tragic story, the Pope melted another bell and sent it to the island.

3. Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)

Among the most famous Slovenian castles, we find the Castle of Ljubljana. It stands on the hill above the city and is one of the symbols and major attractions of the city. Ljubljana Castle, built around the 11th century, is located on one of the most beautiful viewpoints. In the beginning, it was a defensive structure, today it is used as an important place of attraction and culture.

Viewing tower

The viewing tower, which is also the highest point in the city, is exactly 400 meters above sea level. Climb the observation tower and enjoy the most beautiful views of Ljubljana and its surroundings at 360 degrees.

Pipers’ tower

The original entrance was on the north side of the Castle. The municipal players, every day at 11 on the corridor that surrounded the tower, trumpeted by three trombones and a cornet. The players also played the role of city fireguards. When they saw a fire, they hung a red cloth during the day and a lit lamp at night.

Tower Ljubljana Castle

The Gothic Castle Chapel of St George

The seventeenth-century Gothic Chapel of San Giorgio houses heraldic paintings. Try to look up, it will seem like you are traveling back in time when the aristocracy dictated the law, and for the honor, people fought and died.

The Penitentiary

Ljubljana Castle has a dark side that still hides where, in the past, there were prisons. Visit the permanent exhibition “Penitentiary” if you want to know what happened and why people ended up there.
The exhibition, located in the penalty cells, illustrates the role of the penitentiary in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The spaces, narrow and gloomy, with doors and grilles, presented in the first cell, is a prototype of the other cells. The second and third cells accommodate the chronological presentation of the penitentiary phases. In the fourth cell, there are prisoners, who appear in virtual reality (hologram). Observe the prisoner in solitary confinement through a small hole in the door and listen to the names of the prisoners. You will have the impression of being in contact with real people and events.
